1 Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us,	1 Puisque beaucoup ont entrepris de composer un récit des événements qui se sont accomplis parmi nous,
2 just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us,	2 d'après ce que nous ont transmis ceux qui furent dès le début témoins oculaires et serviteurs de laParole,

4 so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received.	4 pour que tu te rendes bien compte de la sûreté des enseignements que tu as reçus.
5 In the days of Herod, King of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah of the priestly division of Abijah; his wife was from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.	5 Il y eut aux jours d'Hérode, roi de Judée, un prêtre du nom de Zacharie, de la classe d'Abia, et il avaitpour femme une descendante d'Aaron, dont le nom était Elisabeth.
6 Both were righteous in the eyes of God, observing all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.	6 Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, et ils suivaient, irréprochables, tous les commandements etobservances du Seigneur.
7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in years.	7 Mais ils n'avaient pas d'enfant, parce qu'Elisabeth était stérile et que tous deux étaient avancés en âge.
8 Once when he was serving as priest in his division's turn before God,	8 Or il advint, comme il remplissait devant Dieu les fonctions sacerdotales au tour de sa classe,
9 according to the practice of the priestly service, he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord to burn incense.	9 qu'il fut, suivant la coutume sacerdotale, désigné par le sort pour entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur ety brûler l'encens.
10 Then, when the whole assembly of the people was praying outside at the hour of the incense offering,	10 Et toute la multitude du peuple était en prière, dehors, à l'heure de l'encens.
11 the angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right of the altar of incense.	11 Alors lui apparut l'Ange du Seigneur, debout à droite de l'autel de l'encens.
12 Zechariah was troubled by what he saw, and fear came upon him.	12 A cette vue, Zacharie fut troublé et la crainte fondit sur lui.
13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John.	13 Mais l'ange lui dit: "Sois sans crainte, Zacharie, car ta supplication a été exaucée; ta femme Elisabetht'enfantera un fils, et tu l'appelleras du nom de Jean.
14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth,	14 Tu auras joie et allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance.
15 for he will be great in the sight of (the) Lord. He will drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the holy Spirit even from his mother's womb,	15 Car il sera grand devant le Seigneur; il ne boira ni vin ni boisson forte; il sera rempli d'Esprit Saint dèsle sein de sa mère
16 and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.	16 et il ramènera de nombreux fils d'Israël au Seigneur, leur Dieu.
17 He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of fathers toward children and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to prepare a people fit for the Lord."	17 Il marchera devant lui avec l'esprit et la puissance d'Elie, pour ramener le coeur des pères vers lesenfants et les rebelles à la prudence des justes, préparant au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé."
18 Then Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years."	18 Zacharie dit à l'ange: "A quoi connaîtrai-je cela? Car moi je suis un vieillard et ma femme est avancéeen âge."
19 And the angel said to him in reply, "I am Gabriel, who stand before God. I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this good news.	19 Et l'ange lui répondit: "Moi je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu, et j'ai été envoyé pour te parleret t'annoncer cette bonne nouvelle.
20 But now you will be speechless and unable to talk until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time."	20 Et voici que tu vas être réduit au silence et sans pouvoir parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront,parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, lesquelles s'accompliront en leur temps."
21 Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and were amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary.	21 Le peuple cependant attendait Zacharie et s'étonnait qu'il s'attardât dans le sanctuaire.
22 But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He was gesturing to them but remained mute.	22 Mais quand il sortit, il ne pouvait leur parler, et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans lesanctuaire. Pour lui, il leur faisait des signes et demeurait muet.
23 Then, when his days of ministry were completed, he went home.	23 Et il advint, quand ses jours de service furent accomplis, qu'il s'en retourna chez lui.
24 After this time his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she went into seclusion for five months, saying,	24 Quelque temps après, sa femme Elisabeth conçut, et elle se tenait cachée cinq mois durant.
25 "So has the Lord done for me at a time when he has seen fit to take away my disgrace before others."	25 "Voilà donc, disait-elle, ce qu'a fait pour moi le Seigneur, au temps où il lui a plu d'enlever monopprobre parmi les hommes!"
26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,	26 Le sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, du nom de Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.	27 à une vierge fiancée à un homme du nom de Joseph, de la maison de David; et le nom de la vierge étaitMarie.
28 And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you."	28 Il entra et lui dit: "Réjouis-toi, comblée de grâce, le Seigneur est avec toi."
29 But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.	29 A cette parole elle fut toute troublée, et elle se demandait ce que signifiait cette salutation.
30 Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.	30 Et l'ange lui dit: "Sois sans crainte, Marie; car tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu.
31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.	31 Voici que tu concevras dans ton sein et enfanteras un fils, et tu l'appelleras du nom de Jésus.
32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,	32 Il sera grand, et sera appelé Fils du Très-Haut. Le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David, sonpère;
33 and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."	33 il régnera sur la maison de Jacob pour les siècles et son règne n'aura pas de fin."
34 But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?"	34 Mais Marie dit à l'ange: "Comment cela sera-t-il, puisque je ne connais pas d'homme?"
35 And the angel said to her in reply, "The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.	35 L'ange lui répondit: "L'Esprit Saint viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te prendra sous sonombre; c'est pourquoi l'être saint qui naîtra sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;	36 Et voici qu'Elisabeth, ta parente, vient, elle aussi, de concevoir un fils dans sa vieillesse, et elle en est àson sixième mois, elle qu'on appelait la stérile;
37 for nothing will be impossible for God."	37 car rien n'est impossible à Dieu."
38 Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.	38 Marie dit alors: "Je suis la servante du Seigneur; qu'il m'advienne selon ta parole!" Et l'ange la quitta.
39 During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah,	39 En ces jours-là, Marie partit et se rendit en hâte vers la région montagneuse, dans une ville de Juda.
40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.	40 Elle entra chez Zacharie et salua Elisabeth.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit,	41 Et il advint, dès qu'Elisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, que l'enfant tressaillit dans son sein etElisabeth fut remplie d'Esprit Saint.
42 cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.	42 Alors elle poussa un grand cri et dit: "Bénie es-tu entre les femmes, et béni le fruit de ton sein!
43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?	43 Et comment m'est-il donné que vienne à moi la mère de mon Seigneur?
44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.	44 Car, vois-tu, dès l'instant où ta salutation a frappé mes oreilles, l'enfant a tressailli d'allégresse en monsein.
45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."	45 Oui, bienheureuse celle qui a cru en l'accomplissement de ce qui lui a été dit de la part du Seigneur!"
46 And Mary said: "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;	46 Marie dit alors: "Mon âme exalte le Seigneur,
47 my spirit rejoices in God my savior.	47 et mon esprit tressaille de joie en Dieu mon sauveur,
48 For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.	48 parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur l'abaissement de sa servante. Oui, désormais toutes les générations mediront bienheureuse,
49 The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.	49 car le Tout-Puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses. Saint est son nom,
50 His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him.	50 et sa miséricorde s'étend d'âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent.
51 He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.	51 Il a déployé la force de son bras, il a dispersé les hommes au coeur superbe.
52 He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly.	52 Il a renversé les potentats de leurs trônes et élevé les humbles,
53 The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty.	53 Il a comblé de biens les affamés et renvoyé les riches les mains vides.
54 He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy,	54 Il est venu en aide à Israël, son serviteur, se souvenant de sa miséricorde, --
55 according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."	55 selon qu'il l'avait annoncé à nos pères - en faveur d'Abraham et de sa postérité à jamais!"
56 Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home.	56 Marie demeura avec elle environ trois mois, puis elle s'en retourna chez elle.
57 When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son.	57 Quant à Elisabeth, le temps fut accompli où elle devait enfanter, et elle mit au monde un fils.
58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her.	58 Ses voisins et ses proches apprirent que le Seigneur avait fait éclater sa miséricorde à son égard, et ilss'en réjouissaient avec elle.
59 When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,	59 Et il advint, le huitième jour, qu'ils vinrent pour circoncire l'enfant. On voulait l'appeler Zacharie, dunom de son père;
60 but his mother said in reply, "No. He will be called John."	60 mais, prenant la parole, sa mère dit: "Non, il s'appellera Jean."
61 But they answered her, "There is no one among your relatives who has this name."	61 Et on lui dit: "Il n'y a personne de ta parenté qui porte ce nom!"
62 So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.	62 Et l'on demandait par signes au père comment il voulait qu'on l'appelât.
63 He asked for a tablet and wrote, "John is his name," and all were amazed.	63 Celui-ci demanda une tablette et écrivit: "Jean est son nom"; et ils en furent tous étonnés.
64 Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God.	64 A l'instant même, sa bouche s'ouvrit et sa langue se délia, et il parlait et bénissait Dieu.
65 Then fear came upon all their neighbors, and all these matters were discussed throughout the hill country of Judea.	65 La crainte s'empara de tous leurs voisins, et dans la montagne de Judée tout entière on racontait toutesces choses.
66 All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, "What, then, will this child be?" For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.	66 Tous ceux qui en entendirent parler les mirent dans leur coeur, en disant: "Que sera donc cet enfant?"Et, de fait, la main du Seigneur était avec lui.
67 Then Zechariah his father, filled with the holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:	67 Et Zacharie, son père, fut rempli d'Esprit Saint et se mit à prophétiser:
68 "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and brought redemption to his people.	68 "Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, de ce qu'il a visité et délivré son peuple,
69 He has raised up a horn for our salvation within the house of David his servant,	69 et nous a suscité une puissance de salut dans la maison de David, son serviteur,
70 even as he promised through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old:	70 selon qu'il l'avait annoncé par la bouche de ses saints prophètes des temps anciens,
71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,	71 pour nous sauver de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent.
72 to show mercy to our fathers and to be mindful of his holy covenant	72 Ainsi fait-il miséricorde à nos pères, ainsi se souvient-il de son alliance sainte,
73 and of the oath he swore to Abraham our father, and to grant us that,	73 du serment qu'il a juré à Abraham, notre père, de nous accorder
74 rescued from the hand of enemies, without fear we might worship him	74 que, sans crainte, délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, nous le servions
75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.	75 en sainteté et justice devant lui, tout au long de nos jours.
76 And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,	76 Et toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut; car tu marcheras devant le Seigneur, pourlui préparer les voies,
77 to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,	77 pour donner à son peuple la connaissance du salut par la rémission de ses péchés;
78 because of the tender mercy of our God by which the daybreak from on high will visit us	78 grâce aux sentiments de miséricorde de notre Dieu, dans lesquels nous a visités l'Astre d'en haut,
79 to shine on those who sit in darkness and death's shadow, to guide our feet into the path of peace."	79 pour illuminer ceux qui demeurent dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort, afin de guider nos pas dansle chemin de la paix."
80 The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel.	80 Cependant l'enfant grandissait, et son esprit se fortifiait. Et il demeurait dans les déserts jusqu'au jourde sa manifestation à Israël.
