NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 "LORD Almighty, God of Israel, afflicted souls and dismayed spirits call to you.	1 Seigneur tout-puissant, Dieu d'Israël, c'est une âme angoissée, un esprit ébranlé, qui te crie:
2 Hear, O LORD, for you are a God of mercy; and have mercy on us, who have sinned against you:	2 Ecoute, Seigneur, aie pitié, car nous avons péché devant toi.
3 for you are enthroned forever, while we are perishing forever.	3 Toi, tu trônes éternellement; nous autres, nous périssons pour toujours.
4 LORD Almighty, God of Israel, hear the prayer of Israel's few, the sons of those who sinned against you; they did not heed the voice of the LORD, their God, and the evils cling to us.	4 Seigneur tout-puissant, Dieu d'Israël, écoute donc la supplication des morts d'Israël, des fils de ceuxqui ont péché contre toi, qui n'ont pas écouté la voix du Seigneur leur Dieu de sorte que les malheurs se sontattachés à nous.
5 Remember at this time not the misdeeds of our fathers, but your own hand and name:	5 Ne te souviens pas des fautes de nos pères, mais en cette heure souviens-toi de ta main et de tonNom.
6 for you are the LORD our God; and you, O LORD, we will praise!	6 Oui, tu es le Seigneur notre Dieu, et nous voulons te louer, Seigneur.
7 For this, you put into our hearts the fear of you: that we may call upon your name, and praise you in our captivity, when we have removed from our hearts all the wickedness of our fathers who sinned against you.	7 Car tu as mis en nos coeurs ta crainte pour que nous invoquions ton Nom. Nous voulons te louer ennotre exil, puisque nous avons écarté de notre coeur toute la méchanceté de nos pères qui ont péché devant toi.
8 Behold us today in our captivity, where you scattered us, a reproach, a curse, and a requital for all the misdeeds of our fathers, who withdrew from the LORD, our God."	8 Nous voici, aujourd'hui encore, en cet exil où tu nous as dispersés pour être un opprobre, unemalédiction, une condamnation, après toutes les fautes de nos pères, qui s'étaient éloignés du Seigneur notreDieu.
9 Hear, O Israel, the commandments of life: listen, and know prudence!	9 Ecoute, Israël, les préceptes de vie, tends l'oreille pour connaître la science.
10 How is it, Israel, that you are in the land of your foes, grown old in a foreign land, Defiled with the dead,	10 Pourquoi, Israël, pourquoi es-tu au pays de tes ennemis, vieillissant en terre étrangère,
11 accounted with those destined for the nether world?	11 te souillant avec les morts, compté parmi ceux qui vont au shéol?
12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom!	12 C'est que tu abandonnas la Source de la Sagesse!
13 Had you walked in the way of God, you would have dwelt in enduring peace.	13 Si tu avais marché dans la voie de Dieu, tu habiterais dans la paix pour toujours.
14 Learn where prudence is, where strength, where understanding; That you may know also where are length of days, and life, where light of the eyes, and peace.	14 Apprends où est la science, où est la force, où est l'intelligence, pour connaître aussi où est lalongueur de jours et la vie, où est la lumière des yeux et la paix.
15 Who has found the place of wisdom, who has entered into her treasuries?	15 Mais qui a découvert son lieu, qui a pénétré en ses trésors?
16 Where are the rulers of the nations, they who lorded it over the wild beasts of the earth,	16 Où sont-ils les chefs des nations et les dominateurs des bêtes de la terre,
17 and made sport of the birds of the heavens: They who heaped up the silver and the gold in which men trust; of whose possessions there was no end?	17 ceux qui se jouent des oiseaux du ciel, ceux qui accumulent l'argent et l'or sur quoi les hommess'appuient, et dont les possessions n'ont pas de fin,
18 They schemed anxiously for money, but there is no trace of their work:	18 ceux qui travaillent l'argent avec grand soin - mais leurs oeuvres ne laissent pas de traces?
19 They have vanished down into the nether world, and others have risen up in their stead.	19 Ils ont disparu, descendus au shéol! D'autres à leur place se sont levés,
20 Later generations have seen the light, have dwelt in the land, But the way to understanding they have not known,	20 de plus jeunes ont vu la lumière et ont habité sur la terre: mais la voie de la connaissance ils ne l'ontpas connue,
21 they have not perceived her paths, or reached her; their offspring were far from the way to her.	21 ils n'ont pas compris ses sentiers. Leurs fils non plus ne l'ont point saisie, ils sont restés loin de savoie.
22 She has not been heard of in Canaan, nor seen in Teman.	22 On n'a rien su d'elle en Canaan, on ne l'a pas aperçue à Témân;
23 The sons of Hagar who seek knowledge on earth, the merchants of Midian and Teman, the phrasemakers seeking knowledge, These have not known the way to wisdom, nor have they her paths in mind.	23 les fils d'Agar en quête d'intelligence ici-bas, les marchands de Madiân et de Téma, les diseurs deparaboles et les chercheurs d'intelligence n'ont pas connu la voie de la sagesse, ne se sont pas rappelés sessentiers.
24 O Israel, how vast is the house of God, how broad the scope of his dominion:	24 Qu'elle est grande, Israël, la demeure de Dieu, qu'il est étendu le lieu de son domaine,
25 Vast and endless, high and immeasurable!	25 grand et sans borne, haut et immense!
26 In it were born the giants, renowned at the first, stalwarts, skilled in war.	26 Là naquirent les géants, fameux dès l'origine, hauts de stature, experts à la guerre;
27 Not these did God choose, nor did he give them the way of understanding;	27 de ceux-là Dieu ne fit pas choix, il ne leur montra pas la voie de la connaissance;
28 They perished for lack of prudence, perished through their folly.	28 ils périrent, car ils n'avaient pas la science, ils périrent par leur folie.
29 Who has gone up to the heavens and taken her, or brought her down from the clouds?	29 Qui monta au ciel pour la saisir et la faire descendre des nuées?
30 Who has crossed the sea and found her, bearing her away rather than choice gold?	30 Qui passa la mer pour la découvrir et la rapporter au prix d'un or très pur?
31 None knows the way to her, nor has any understood her paths.	31 Nul ne connaît sa voie, nul ne comprend son sentier.
32 Yet he who knows all things knows her; he has probed her by his knowledge-- He who established the earth for all time, and filled it with four-footed beasts;	32 Mais Celui qui sait tout la connaît, il l'a scrutée par son intelligence, lui qui pour l'éternité a disposéla terre et l'a emplie de bétail,
33 He who dismisses the light, and it departs, calls it, and it obeys him trembling;	33 lui qui envoie la lumière, et elle part, qui la rappelle, et elle obéit en tremblant;
34 Before whom the stars at their posts shine and rejoice;	34 les étoiles brillent à leur poste, joyeuses:
35 When he calls them, they answer, "Here we are!" shining with joy for their Maker.	35 les appelle-t-il, elles répondent: Nous voici! elles brillent avec joie pour leur Créateur.
36 Such is our God; no other is to be compared to him:	36 C'est lui qui est notre Dieu: aucun autre ne lui est comparable.
37 He has traced out all the way of understanding, and has given her to Jacob, his servant, to Israel, his beloved son.	37 Il a creusé la voie entière de la connaissance et l'a montrée à Jacob, son serviteur, à Israël, son bien-aimé;
38 Since then she has appeared on earth, and moved among men.	38 puis elle est apparue sur terre et elle a vécu parmi les hommes.
