Jeremiah 5

1 Roam the streets of Jerusalem, look about and observe, Search through her public places, to find even one Who lives uprightly and seeks to be faithful, and I will pardon her!	1 Percorrete le vie di Gerusalemme: osservate, per favore, e informatevi; cercate per le sue piazze se troverete qualcuno, se c'è chi pratichi giustizia, chi cerchi fedeltà, e io la perdonerò.
2 Though they say, "As the LORD lives," they swear falsely.	2 Anche se dicono: "Vivente è il Signore!", essi giurano certo per il falso.
3 O LORD, do your eyes not look for honesty? You struck them, but they did not cringe; you laid them low, but they refused correction; They set their faces harder than stone, and refused to return to you.	3 Signore, i tuoi occhi non sono forse per la fedeltà? Li hai percossi, ma non si affliggono, li hai distrutti! Han rifiutato di accettare la correzione, hanno indurito la loro faccia più che la pietra, hanno ricusato di ritornare!
4 It is only the lowly, I thought, who are foolish; For they know not the way of the LORD, their duty to their God.	4 Ma io pensavo: "Certo essi sono poveri, sono stolti, perché non conoscono la via del Signore, il giudizio del loro Dio!
5 I will go to the great ones and speak with them; For they know the way of the LORD, their duty to their God. But, one and all, they had broken the yoke, torn off the harness.	5 Me ne andrò verso i grandi e parlerò loro; certo essi conoscono la via del Signore, il giudizio del loro Dio!". Ma anch'essi insieme han rotto il giogo, hanno infranto i legami!
6 Therefore lions from the forest slay them, wolves of the desert ravage them, Leopards keep watch round their cities: all who come out are torn to pieces For their many crimes and their numerous rebellions.	6 Per questo li colpisce il leone della foresta, il lupo della steppa li disperde, la pantera vigila le loro città: chiunque se ne esce è sbranato, perché molte sono le sue trasgressioni, sono aumentate le sue ribellioni.
7 Why should I pardon you these things? Your sons have forsaken me, they swear by gods that are not. I fed them, but they committed adultery; to the harlot's house they throng.	7 "Perché dovrei perdonarti? I figli tuoi mi hanno abbandonato, hanno giurato per dèi da nulla. Io li ho saziati, ma hanno adulterato e nella casa della meretrice si fanno incisioni rituali.
8 Lustful stallions they are, each neighs after another's wife.	8 Stalloni pasciuti e ardenti essi sono, ognuno alla femmina del suo amico nitrisce.
9 Shall I not punish them for these things? says the LORD; On a nation such as this shall I not take vengeance?	9 Per queste cose non dovrei punire? Oracolo del Signore. E di una nazione siffatta non dovrei vendicarmi?
10 Climb to her terraces, and ravage them, destroy them (not) wholly. Tear away her tendrils, they do not belong to the LORD.	10 Salite tra i suoi filari e distruggete, ma non completamente, i suoi tralci, perché non sono più del Signore!
11 For they have openly rebelled against me, both the house of Israel and the house of Judah, says the LORD.	11 Sì, contro di me hanno agito perfidamente la casa di Israele e la casa di Giuda". Oracolo del Signore.
12 They denied the LORD, saying, "Not he-- No evil shall befall us, neither sword nor famine shall we see.	12 Hanno rinnegato il Signore e han detto: "Non esiste! Non verrà contro di noi sventura, né spada, né fame noi vedremo!
13 The prophets have become wind, and the word is not in them. May their threats be carried out against themselves!"	13 Quanto ai profeti, appartengono al vento e Chi parla non c'è in loro". Così accade loro.
14 Now, for this that you have said, says the LORD, the God of hosts- Behold, I make my words in your mouth, a fire, And this people is the wood that it shall devour!--	14 Pertanto così dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti: "Perché avete proferito tale discorso, eccomi: io renderò le mie parole in bocca tua qual fuoco; radunerai il popolo come legna, e lo divorerà.
15 Beware, I will bring against you a nation from afar, O house of Israel, says the LORD; A long-lived nation, an ancient nation, a people whose language you know not, whose speech you cannot understand.	15 Eccomi: io farò venire contro di voi una nazione da lontano, o casa di Israele, oracolo del Signore, una nazione poderosa, una nazione di antica data, una nazione di cui ignori la lingua e non comprendi quel che dice.
16 Their quivers are like open graves; all of them are warriors.	16 La sua faretra è come sepolcro spalancato; essi sono tutti eroi.
17 They will devour your harvest and your bread, devour your sons and your daughters, Devour your sheep and cattle, devour your vines and fig trees; They will beat flat with the sword the fortified city in which you trust.	17 Divorerà le tue messi e il tuo pane, divorerà i tuoi figli e le tue figlie, divorerà il tuo gregge e i tuoi armenti, divorerà la tua vigna e le tue ficaie, demolirà le tue città fortificate, nelle quali tu confidi, con la spada.
18 Yet even in those days, says the LORD, I will not wholly destroy you.	18 Tuttavia ancora in quei giorni, oracolo del Signore, io non agirò a fondo.
19 And when they ask, "Why has the LORD done all these things to us?" say to them, "As you have forsaken me to serve strange gods in your own land, so shall you serve strangers in a land not your own."	19 Ma avverrà che se diranno: "Per qual motivo il Signore nostro Dio ci ha fatto queste cose?", allora dirai loro: "Poiché mi avete abbandonato e avete servito dèi stranieri nel vostro paese, per questo voi servirete gli stranieri in un paese non vostro".
20 Announce this to the house of Jacob, proclaim it in Judah:	20 Annunziate questo alla casa di Giacobbe, fatelo sentire a Giuda. Dite:
21 Pay attention to this, foolish and senseless people Who have eyes and see not, who have ears and hear not.	21 Ascoltate questo, per favore, o popolo stolto e senza cuore; avete occhi ma non vedete, avete orecchie ma non sentite.
22 Should you not fear me, says the LORD, should you not tremble before me? I made the sandy shore the sea's limit, which by eternal decree it may not overstep. Toss though it may, it is to no avail; though its billows roar, they cannot pass.	22 Non mi temerete, dunque? Oracolo del Signore. O non tremerete dinanzi a me che ho posto la sabbia come confine al mare, barriera eterna che non sorpassa? I mari si agitano ma non prevalgono, spumeggiano le loro onde ma non la sorpassano.
23 But this people's heart is stubborn and rebellious; they turn and go away,	23 Questo popolo, però, ha un cuore ribelle e contumace: si son voltati e se ne sono andati!
24 And say not in their hearts, "Let us fear the LORD, our God, Who gives us rain early and late, in its time; Who watches for us over the appointed weeks of harvest."	24 Neppur han detto in cuor loro: "Abbiamo timore del Signore, nostro Dio, che invia la pioggia in autunno e a primavera, al tempo suo, che ci custodisce le settimane fisse per il raccolto".
25 Your crimes have prevented these things, your sins have turned back these blessings from you.	25 Le vostre iniquità han sconvolto queste cose e i vostri peccati hanno allontanato la felicità da voi!
26 For there are among my people criminals; like fowlers they set traps, but it is men they catch.	26 Sì, si trovano, tra il mio popolo, dei malvagi; spiano di nascosto, come uccellatori; pongono trappole, catturano uomini.
27 Their houses are as full of treachery as a bird-cage is of birds; Therefore they grow powerful and rich,	27 Qual gabbia piena di volatili tali sono le case loro, piene d'inganno: per questo ingrandiscono e arricchiscono.
28 fat and sleek. They go their wicked way; justice they do not defend By advancing the claim of the fatherless or judging the cause of the poor.	28 Ingrassano, divengono belli; oltrepassano tutti i limiti del male. La causa non la difendono, la causa dell'orfano, eppure han successo; né fanno giudizio per i poveri!
29 Shall I not punish these things? says the LORD; on a nation such as this shall I not take vengeance?	29 Non punirò, dunque, queste cose? Oracolo del Signore. Contro una nazione siffatta non dovrò vendicarmi?
30 A shocking, horrible thing has happened in the land:	30 Cosa esecrabile e abominevole si realizzerà nel paese!
31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests teach as they wish; Yet my people will have it so; what will you do when the end comes?	31 I profeti profetizzano nella menzogna, i sacerdoti insegnano di proprio arbitrio. Eppure il mio popolo ama che sia così! Ma cosa farete quando verrà la sua fine?".
