Proverbs 20

1 Wine is arrogant, strong drink is riotous; none who goes astray for it is wise.	1 Il vino è pieno di lussuria,e e l'ubriachezza di tumulti: colui al quale piaccion tali cose non sarà sapiente.
2 The dread of the king is as when a lion roars; he who incurs his anger forfeits his life.	2 L'ira del re è come il ruggito del leone, chi lo irrita pecca contro la sua vita.
3 It is honorable for a man to shun strife, while every fool starts a quarrel.	3 E' un onore per l'uomo star lontano dalle contese, ma tutti gli stolti s'immischiano nei litigi.
4 In seedtime the sluggard plows not; when he looks for the harvest, it is not there.	4 A causa del freddo il pigro non volle arare, andrà dunque ad accattare nell'estate, e non gli sarà dato nulla.
5 The intention in the human heart is like water far below the surface, but the man of intelligence draws it forth.	5 Come acque profonde sono i disegni nel cuore dell'uomo, ma l'uomo sapiente li trarrà fuori.
6 Many are declared to be men of virtue: but who can find one worthy of trust?	6 Molti uomini son chiamati misericordiosi, ma un uomo fedele chi lo potrà trovare?
7 When a man walks in integrity and justice, happy are his children after him!	7 Il giusto che cammina nella sua integrità lascerà felici dietro di sé i suoi figlioli.
8 A king seated on the throne of judgment dispels all evil with his glance.	8 Il re assiso sul trono dove rende giustizia col suo sguardo dissipa ogni male.
9 Who can say, "I have made my heart clean, I am cleansed of my sin"?	9 Chi può dire: « Il mio cuore è senza macchia, sono immune dal peccato? »
10 Varying weights, varying measures, are both an abomination to the LORD.	10 Doppio peso, doppia misura, sono ambedue abbonainevoli davanti a Dio.
11 Even by his manners the child betrays whether his conduct is innocent and right.	11 Dalle inclinazioni del fanciullo si conosce se puro e retto sarà il suo operare.
12 The ear that hears, and the eye that sees-- the LORD has made them both.	12 L'orecchio che ascolta e l'occhio che vede li ha fatti tutti e due il Signore.
13 Love not sleep, lest you be reduced to poverty; eyes wide open mean abundant food.	13 Non amare il sonno, per non essere oppresso dall'indigenza; tieni gli occhi aperti ed avrai pane in abbondanza.
14 "Bad, bad!" says the buyer; but once he has gone his way, he boasts.	14 « Robaccia, robaccia! » dice ogni compratore, ma quando se n'è andato se ne vanta.
15 Like gold or a wealth of corals, wise lips are a precious ornament.	15 Vi è l'oro, e vi sono molte gemme, ma vaso prezioso son le labbra sapienti.
16 Take his garment who becomes surety for another, and for strangers yield it up!	16 Togli la veste a chi si fa mallevadore per uno straniero, e poi' gli stranieri togli il pegno da lui.
17 The bread of deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.	17 E' dolce all'uomo il pan frodato, ma poi si trova la bocca piena di ghiaiottoli.
18 Plans made after advice succeed; so with wise guidance wage your war.	18 I disegni prendon vigore dal consiglio, e con savia direzione devono esser condotte le guerre.
19 A newsmonger reveals secrets; so have nothing to do with a babbler!	19 Con chi rivela i segreti e procede con frode, e apro troppo le labbra, non aver che fare.
20 If one curses his father or mother, his lamp will go out at the coming of darkness.	20 Chi maledice il padre e la madre, si estinguerà la sua lampada nel folto delle tenebre.
21 Possessions gained hastily at the outset will in the end not be blessed.	21 Il patrimonio messo insieme da principio con celerità, sarà alla fine privo di benedizione.
22 Say not, "I will repay evil!" Trust in the LORD and he will help you.	22 Non dire: « Mi vendicherò »; aspetta il Signore ed Egli ti libererà.
23 Varying weights are an abomination to the LORD, and false scales are not good.	23 E' in abominio davanti a Dio il doppio peso, e la bilancia falsa non è cosa buona.
24 Man's steps are from the LORD; how, then, can a man understand his way?	24 I passi dell'uomo son diretti dal Signore, chi degli uomini potrà capire la via da tenere?
25 Rashly to pledge a sacred gift is a trap for a man, or to regret a vow once made.	25 E' rovinoso per l'uomo divorare i santi, e dopo i voti pentirsene.
26 A wise king winnows the wicked, and threshes them under the cartwheel.	26 Il re saggio disperde gli empi ed innalza sopra di essi un arco trionfale.
27 A lamp from the LORD is the breath of man; it searches through all his inmost being.	27 Lo spirito dell'uomo è fiaccola del Signore la quale penetra le più intime viscere.
28 Kindness and piety safeguard the king, and he upholds his throne by justice.	28 La bontà e la fedeltà custodiscono il re; il trono di lui è reso stabile dalla clemenza.
29 The glory of young men is their strength, and the dignity of old men is gray hair.	29 Gloria dei giovani è la loro forza, ornamento dei vecchi è la canizie.
30 Evil is cleansed away by bloody lashes, and a scourging to the inmost being.	30 Il livido delle percosse fa sparire i mali, così pure le piaghe nel più intimo delle viscere.
