Judith 9

1 Judith threw herself down prostrate, with ashes strewn upon her head, and wearing nothing over her sackcloth. While the incense was being offered in the temple of God in Jerusalem that evening, Judith prayed to the Lord with a loud voice:	1 E partendosi Ozia con quelli ch' erano con lui, entrò Iudit l'oratorio suo; e vestissi di cilicio e pose la cenere sopra lo capo suo, e gittatasi in terra dinanzi dal Signore, chiamò al Signore, e disse:
2 "Lord, God of my forefather Simeon! You put a sword into his hand to take revenge upon the foreigners who had immodestly loosened the maiden's girdle, shamefully exposed her thighs, and disgracefully violated her body. This they did, though you forbade it.	2 Signore Iddio del padre mio Simeon, lo qual desti a lui il coltello per defensione contro alle genti forestiere, le quali sono state corruttori nelle sue iniquitadi, e hanno isforzate le vergini e date in confusione;
3 Therefore you had their rulers slaughtered; and you covered with their blood the bed in which they lay deceived, the same bed that had felt the shame of their own deceiving. You smote the slaves together with their princes, and the princes together with their servants.	3 e desti le loro mogli in rubamento, e le loro figliuole in prigione, e tutta la loro facoltà divisa tra li servi tuoi li quali (per tuo amore) seguitorono il tuo buono fervore (e desiderio), sovvieni, priegoti Signore Iddio mio, (e dà aiuto) a me vedova.
4 Their wives you handed over to plunder, and their daughters to captivity; and all the spoils you divided among your favored sons, who burned with zeal for you, and in their abhorrence of the defilement of their kinswoman, called on you for help.	4 Tu (Signore) hai fatto le cose che sono state prima, e hai pensato di fare l'una dopo l'altra; e quello che tu hai voluto, quello è stato fatto.
5 "O God, my God, hear me also, a widow. It is you who were the author of those events and of what preceded and followed them. The present, also, and the future you have planned. Whatever you devise comes into being;	5 Tutte le tue vie sono preparate, e tutti li tuoi giudicii sono per te posti nella tua providenza.
6 the things you decide on come forward and say, 'Here we are!' All your ways are in readiness, and your judgment is made with foreknowledge.	6 Ragguarda ora il campo degli Assirii, sì come tu ti degnasti di riguardare il campo degli Egizii, quando loro correvano armati dopo i servi tuoi; i quali si confidavano nelli carri e nelli loro cavalieri e nella moltitudine de' suoi combattitori.
7 "Here are the Assyrians, a vast force, priding themselves on horse and rider, boasting of the power of their infantry, trusting in shield and spear, bow and sling. They do not know that	7 Ma (Signore) tu guardasti sopra il campo loro, e le tenebre li faticorono.
8 " 'You, the Lord, crush warfare; Lord is your name. Shatter their strength in your might, and crush their force in your wrath; for they have resolved to profane your sanctuary, to defile the tent where your glorious name resides, and to overthrow with iron the horns of your altar.	8 E l'abisso tenne li loro piedi, e le acque li coprirono.
9 See their pride, and send forth your wrath upon their heads. Give me, a widow, the strong hand to execute my plan.	9 Così faccia a questa gente, Signore, i quali si confidano nella sua moltitudine, e nelli carri suoi e nelle pertiche acute [e negli scudi] e nelle sagitte sue e nelle lance si gloriano.
10 With the guile of my lips, smite the slave together with the ruler, the ruler together with his servant; crush their pride by the hand of a woman.	10 E non sanno che tu sei Signore Iddio nostro, il quale spezzi le battaglie dal principio; e il nome è a te Signore.
11 "Your strength is not in numbers, nor does your power depend upon stalwart men; but you are the God of the lowly, the helper of the oppressed, the supporter of the weak, the protector of the forsaken, the savior of those without hope.	11 Dirizza (Signore) il tuo braccio come facesti di prima, e percuoti la virtù di costoro con la tua virtù; cada la virtù di questa gente nella iracondia tua, i quali promettono di contaminare le tue cose. sante, e violare il tabernacolo del tuo nome, e batter a terra con lo suo coltello il corno del tuo altare.
12 "Please, please, God of my forefather, God of the heritage of Israel, Lord of heaven and earth, Creator of the waters, King of all you have created, hear my prayer!	12 Fa dunque, Signore, che con lo loro proprio coltello li sia levata la loro superbia.
13 Let my guileful speech bring wound and wale on those who have planned dire things against your covenant, your holy temple, Mount Zion, and the homes your children have inherited.	13 Sia preso con lo lacciuolo de' occhii suoi in me, e percuotilo con le labbra della mia dilezione.
14 Let your whole nation and all the tribes know clearly that you are the god of all power and might, and that there is no other who protects the people of Israel but you alone."	14 Dà a me Signore nell' animo costanza acciò ch' io lo disprezzi, e virtù acciò ch' io lo rivolti.
	15 Però che questo sarà in memoria del nome tuo, quando sarà gettato a terra per mano di una donna.
	16 Però che non è, Signore, la virtù tua nella moltitudine, nè la volontà tua nella virtù de' cavalli; e i superbi dal principio non ti piacquero; ma a te. piacque sempre la orazione degli umili e de' mansueti.
	17 Signor de' cieli', creatore dell' acque e Signore di tutte le creature, esaudi me misera, la qual ti priega (assiduamente), e confidazi della tua misericordia.
	18 Ricòrdati, Signore, del testamento tuo; e poni tal parola nella bocca mia, e firma tal consiglio nel cuore mio, acciò che la tua casa permanga nella tua santificazione,
	19 e tutte le genti conoscano che tu sei Iddio, e non sia altro Iddio se non tu.
