1 Now in those days Judith, daughter of Merari, son of Joseph, son of Oziel, son of Elkiah, son of Ananias, son of Gideon, son of Raphain, son of Ahitob, son of Elijah, son of Hilkiah, son of Eliab, son of Nathanael, son of Salamiel, son of Sarasadai, son of Simeon, son of Israel, heard of this.	1 E dopo questo addivenne che avendo udito queste parole Iudit vedova, la qual era figliuola di Merari, figliuolo di Idox, figliuolo di Iosef, figliuolo di Ozia, figliuolo di Elai, figliuolo di Iamnor, figliuolo di Gedeon, figliuolo di Rafaim, figliuolo di Achitob, figliuolo di Melchia, figliuolo di Enan, figliuolo di Natania, figliuolo di Salatiel, figliuolo di Simeon, figliuolo di Ruben;
2 Her husband, Manasseh, of her own tribe and clan, had died at the time of the barley harvest.	2 e lo marito di Iudit fu Manasse, lo qual morì nel tempo della mietitura dell' orzo;
3 While he was in the field supervising those who bound the sheaves, he suffered sunstroke; and he died of this illness in Bethulia, his native city. He was buried with his forefathers in the field between Dothan and Balamon.	3 però ch' egli stava sopra quelli che ligavano li fasci nel campo, e il caldo li percosse lo capo, e per questo morissi nella sua città chiamata Betulia, e ivi fu seppellito con li padri suoi.
4 The widowed Judith remained three years and four months at home,	4 Ed era Iudit già stata vedova (e senza marito) tre anni e sei mesi.
5 where she set up a tent for herself on the roof of her house. She put sackcloth about her loins and wore widow's weeds.	5 E nella parte di sopra della sua casa si fece una camera secreta, nella quale con le sue fanciulle sì stava chiusa.
6 She fasted all the days of her widowhood, except sabbath eves and sabbaths, new moon eves and new moons, feastdays and holidays of the house of Israel.	6 E avea sopra li suoi lombi lo cilicio, e digiunava tutti li dì della vita sua, fuori che li sabbati e li primi dì della luna e le feste della casa d' Israel.
7 She was beautifully formed and lovely to behold. Her husband, Manasseh, had left her gold and silver, servants and maids, livestock and fields, which she was maintaining.	7 Ed era di uno troppo elegante aspetto, alla quale lo marito suo li avea lasciato molte ricchezze, e una grande famiglia, e (molte) possessioni piene di armenti di buoi e di greggie di pecore.
8 No one had a bad word to say about her, for she was a very God-fearing woman.	8 E questa era sopra tutti famosissima, però che temea molto Iddio, e non si trovava chi dicesse di lei una mala parola.
9 When Judith, therefore, heard of the harsh words which the people, discouraged by their lack of water, had spoken against their ruler, and of all that Uzziah had said to them in reply, swearing that he would hand over the city to the Assyrians at the end of five days,	9 E avendo udilo (Iudit), che Ozia avea promesso che passato il quinto dì daria la città (allo esercito di Oloferne), mandò alli due principali della terra, cioè Cabri e Carmi.
10 she sent the maid who was in charge of all her things to ask Uzziah, Chabris, and Charmis, the elders of the city, to visit her.	10 E vennero a lei, e disse loro: che cosa è questa, che ha consentito Ozia, di dar la città agli Assirii, se fra spazio di cinque di non verrà a voi adiutorio?
11 When they came, she said to them: "Listen to me, you rulers of the people of Bethulia. What you said to the people today is not proper. When you promised to hand over the city to our enemies at the end of five days unless within that time the Lord comes to our aid, you interposed between God and yourselves this oath which you took.	11 E chi siete voi, i quali tentate lo Signore Iddio?
12 Who are you, then, that you should have put God to the test this day, setting yourselves in the place of God in human affairs?	12 Queste non sono le parole, le quali vi provocheranno la misericordia (di Dio), ma più tosto conciteranno contro a voi ira, e accenderanno lo furore (di Dio).
13 It is the Lord Almighty for whom you are laying down conditions; will you never understand anything?	13 Voi vi avete posto il tempo della misericordia di Dio, e nel vostro arbitrio gli avete ordinato (e statuto) lo dì.
14 You cannot plumb the depths of the human heart or grasp the workings of the human mind; how then can you fathom God, who has made all these things, discern his mind, and understand his plan? "No, my brothers, do not anger the Lord our God.	14 Ma perchè Iddiò è paziente, in questo istesso pentiamoci, e dimandiamo perdonanza a lui con lacrime.
15 For if he does not wish to come to our aid within the five days, he has it equally within his power to protect us at such time as he pleases, or to destroy us in the face of our enemies.	15 Però che Iddio non si conduce come l' uomo, nè si infiammerà ad iracondia come lo figliuolo dell' uomo.
16 It is not for you to make the Lord our God give surety for his plans. "God is not man that he should be moved by threats, nor human, that he may be given an ultimatum.	16 E però umiliamo l' anime nostre a lui, e nel spirito umiliato e contrito serviamo a lui.
17 "So while we wait for the salvation that comes from him, let us call upon him to help us, and he will hear our cry if it is his good pleasure.	17 Diciamo piagnendo al Signore, che faccia secondo la sua volontade con noi la misericordia sua; che sì come il cuore nostro è conturbato nella superbia loro, così ci gloriamo della nostra umiltade.
18 For there has not risen among us in recent generations, nor does there exist today, any tribe, or clan, or town, or city of ours that worships gods made by hands, as happened in former days.	18 Però che noi non siamo seguitati i peccati de' nosiri padri, i quali abbandonarono il suo Dio, e adorarono i dii d'altri.
19 It was for such conduct that our forefathers were handed over to the sword and to pillage, and fell with great destruction before our enemies.	19 Per lo qual peccato dati furono in uccisione e in rubamento e in confusione alli nemici loro; ma noi non sappiamo altro Iddio fuori che lui.
20 But since we acknowledge no other god but the Lord, we hope that he will not disdain us or any of our people.	20 Aspettiamo dunque umilmente la consolazione sua, e cercherà lo sangue nostro nelle afflizioni de' nostri nemici, e umilierà tutte le genti le quali si levano contro a noi, e faralle lo nostro Signore Dio sanza onore.
21 If we are taken, all Judea will fall, our sanctuary will be plundered, and God will make us pay for its profanation with our life's blood.	21 E ora, fratelli, i quali siete li maggiori nel popolo di Dio, e da voi dipende l'anima loro, al parlare vostro dirizzate i cuori loro, acciò che si ricordino, che i padri nostri furono tentati, acciò che fossero provati se amavano il suo Iddio veramente.
22 For the slaughter of our kinsmen, for the taking of exiles from the land, and for the devastation of our inheritance, he will lay the guilt on our heads. Wherever we shall be enslaved among the nations, we shall be a mockery and a reproach in the eyes of our masters.	22 Debbonsi ricordare, come il padre nostro Abraam fu tentato, e provato per molte tribolazioni fu fatto amico di Dio.
23 Our enslavement will not be turned to our benefit, but the Lord our God, will maintain it to our disgrace.	23 Così Isaac, così Iacob, così Moisè, e tutti quelli i quali piacquero a Dio, per molte tribolazioni passarono fedeli.
24 "Therefore, my brothers, let us set an example for our kinsmen. Their lives depend on us, and the defense of the sanctuary, the temple, and the altar rests with us.	24 Ma quelli, li quali non riceverono le tentazioni con lo timore di Dio, e la impazienza sua e lo impeto della sua mormorazione proferirono contro a Dio,
25 Besides all this, we should be grateful to the Lord our God, for putting us to the test, as he did our forefathers.	25 furono esterminati dallo esterminatore, e perirono dalli serpenti.
26 Recall how he dealt with Abraham, and how he tried Isaac, and all that happened to Jacob in Syrian Mesopotamia while he was tending the flocks of Laban, his mother's brother.	26 E noi non cerchiamo vendetta per quelle cose che noi siamo afflitti.
27 Not for vengeance did the Lord put them in the crucible to try their hearts, nor has he done so with us. It is by way of admonition that he chastises those who are close to him."	27 Ma pensiamo questi esser piccoli supplizii per i peccati nostri, e crediamo che gli flagelli del Signore siano avvenuti a noi, come a servi suoi, per nostra emendazione, e non a nostra perdizione.
28 Then Uzziah said to her: "All that you have said was spoken with good sense, and no one can gainsay your words.	28 E dissero a lei Ozia e quelli altri principali: tutte quelle cose che tu hai parlato sono vere, e nel tuo parlare non v'è reprensione alcuna.
29 Not today only is your wisdom made evident, but from your earliest years all the people have recognized your prudence, which corresponds to the worthy dispositions of your heart.	29 Ora adunque priega per noi, però che tu sei una donna santa e che teme Iddio.
30 The people, however, were so tortured with thirst that they forced us to speak to them as we did, and to bind ourselves by an oath that we cannot break.	30 E disse loro Iudit: come voi conoscete esser da Dio quello ch' io ho potuto dire,
31 But now, God-fearing woman that you are, pray for us that the Lord may send rain to fill up our cisterns, lest we be weakened still further."	31 così anco provate, quello ch' io ho deliberato di fare, se è da Dio; e pregate che Iddio facci il mio consiglio stabilire.
32 Then Judith said to them: "Listen to me! I will do something that will go down from generation to generation among the descendants of our race.	32 Voi starete alla porta questa notte, e io uscirò con Abra mia serva; e pregate che così come voi avete detto, che in cinque dì Iddio abbi riguardo (e abbi rispetto) al suo popolo d'Israel.
33 Stand at the gate tonight to let me pass through with my maid; and within the days you have specified before you will surrender the city to our enemies, the Lord will rescue Israel by my hand.	33 Ma io non voglio che voi sappiate quello ch' io mi voglio fare; e persino ch' io non vi dico altro, non si facci altro se non pregare per me al Signore Iddio nostro.
34 You must not inquire into what I am doing, for I will not tell you until my plan has been accomplished."	34 E disse a lei Ozia principe di Giuda: va in pace, e il Signore sia teco in vendetta delli nostri nemici. E partendosi se n'andarono.
35 Uzziah and the rulers said to her, "Go in peace, and may the Lord God go before you to take vengeance upon our enemies!"
36 Then they withdrew from the tent and returned to their posts.
