1 When the Israelites who dwelt in Judea heard of all that Holofernes, commander-in-chief of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, had done to the nations, and how he had despoiled all their temples and destroyed them,	1 In quel tempo udendo i figliuoli d' Israel, li quali abitavano nella terra di Giuda, temerono molto dalla faccia sua.
2 they were in extreme dread of him, and greatly alarmed for Jerusalem and the temple of the Lord, their God.	2 Anco il tremore e uno spavento smisurato pigliò lo intelletto e' sentimenti loro, che non facesse questo a Ierusalem e al tempio di Dio, ch' egli avea fatto alle altre città e alli templi loro.
3 Now, they had lately returned from exile, and only recently had all the people of Judea been gathered together, and the vessels, the altar, and the temple been purified from profanation.	3 E mandarono per tutta Samaria, per lo circuito, insino a Ierico; e preoccuparono tutte le sommità de' monti.
4 So they sent word to the whole region of Samaria, to Kona, Beth-horon, Belmain, and Jericho, to Choba and Aesora, and to the valley of Salem.	4 E le ville sue circondarono di mura, e congregarono frumento per la preparazione della battaglia.
5 The people there posted guards on all the summits of the high mountains, fortified their villages, and since their fields had recently been harvested, stored up provisions in preparation for war.	5 Ed Eliachim sacerdote scrisse a tutti quelli i quali erano contro ad Esdrelon, la qual è contro alla faccia del campo il quale è appo Dotain, e a tutti quelli luoghi dove potea essere transito) e passaggio),
6 Joakim, who was high priest in Jerusalem in those days, wrote to the inhabitants of Bethulia (and Betomesthaim), which is on the way to Esdraelon, facing the plain near Dothan,	6 che occupassero li salimenti de' monti, dove potea esser via per andare in Ierusalem, acciò che custodissero li luoghi dove erano li passi stretti tra' monti.
7 and instructed them to keep firm hold of the mountain passes, since these offered access to Judea. It would be easy to ward off the attacking forces, as the defile was only wide enough for two abreast.	7 E fecero i figliuoli d' Israel secondo che gli avea ordinato Eliachim, sacerdote del Signore.
8 The Israelites carried out the orders given them by Joakim, the high priest, and the senate of the whole people of Israel, which met in Jerusalem.	8 E clamò tutto il popolo al Signore con grande istanza, e umiliarono l'anime sue nelle orazioni e digiuni, loro e le loro donne.
9 All the men of Israel cried to God with great fervor and did penance--	9 E vestironsi i sacerdoti di cilicii, e' fanciulli si gettarono in terra dinanzi alla faccia del tempio del Signore, e coprirono l'altare del Signore di cilicio.
10 they, along with their wives, and children, and domestic animals. All their resident aliens, hired laborers, and slaves also girded themselves with sackcloth.	10 E tutto Israel, di una volontà, chiamarono a Dio, che la sua gioventù non fosse data in preda, e le loro mogli in divisione, e le loro città in esterminio, e le cose sue sante in contaminazione, ed elli in obbrobrio delle genti.
11 And all the Israelite men, women and children who lived in Jerusalem prostrated themselves in front of the temple building, with ashes strewn on their heads, displaying their sackcloth covering before the Lord.	11 Allora Eliachim, lo grande sacerdote del Signore, circuì tutto Israel, e parlò
12 The altar, too, they draped in sackcloth; and with one accord they cried out fervently to the God of Israel not to allow their children to be seized, their wives to be taken captive, the cities of their inheritance to be ruined, or the sanctuary to be profaned and mocked for the nations to gloat over.	12 dicendo: sappiate come lo Signore Iddio hae esaudito li vostri preghi, se voi che avete cominciato, continuerete nelli digiuni e nelle orazioni nel cospetto di Dio.
13 The Lord heard their cry and had regard for their distress. For the people observed a fast of many days' duration throughout Judea, and before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty in Jerusalem.	13 Ricordatevi di Moisè, servo del Signore, lo qual cacciò Amalec, il quale si confidava nella virtù sua e nella potenza sua e nello esercito suo e nelli suoi scudieri e nelli suoi carri e nelli suoi cavalieri, non combattendo con ferro, ma con le preghiere de' santi orando.
14 The high priest Joakim, and all the priests in attendance on the Lord who served his altar, were also girded with sackcloth as they offered the daily holocaust, the votive offerings, and the freewill offerings of the people.	14 Così avverrà a tutti li nemici d'Israel, se voi persevererete in questa opera la quale voi avete cominciata.
15 With ashes upon their turbans, they cried to the Lord with all their strength to look with favor on the whole house of Israel.	15 A questa dunque esortazione sua perseveravano, pregando nel cospetto del Signore,
	16 per tal modo che anco coloro che offerivano li sacrificii a Dio, offerivano quelli, cinti di cilicii, ed era la cenere sopra i capi loro.
	17 E tutti con tutto loro cuore pregavano Iddio, acciò che visitasse il popolo suo d'Israel.
