Bamidbàr (במדבר) - Numeri 14

1 ותשא כל העדה ויתנו את קולם ויבכו העם בלילה ההוא	1 At this, the whole community broke out with loud cries, and even in the night the people wailed.
2 וילנו על משה ועל אהרן כל בני ישראל ויאמרו אלהם כל העדה לו מתנו בארץ מצרים או במדבר הזה לו מתנו	2 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, the whole community saying to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that here in the desert we were dead!
3 ולמה יהוה מביא אתנו אל הארץ הזאת לנפל בחרב נשינו וטפנו יהיו לבז הלוא טוב לנו שוב מצרימה	3 Why is the LORD bringing us into this land only to have us fall by the sword? Our wives and little ones will be taken as booty. Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"
4 ויאמרו איש אל אחיו נתנה ראש ונשובה מצרימה	4 So they said to one another, "Let us appoint a leader and go back to Egypt."
5 ויפל משה ואהרן על פניהם לפני כל קהל עדת בני ישראל	5 But Moses and Aaron fell prostrate before the whole assembled community of the Israelites;
6 ויהושע בן נון וכלב בן יפנה מן התרים את הארץ קרעו בגדיהם	6 while Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, who had been in the party that scouted the land, tore their garments
7 ויאמרו אל כל עדת בני ישראל לאמר הארץ אשר עברנו בה לתור אתה טובה הארץ מאד מאד	7 and said to the whole community of the Israelites, "The country which we went through and explored is a fine, rich land.
8 אם חפץ בנו יהוה והביא אתנו אל הארץ הזאת ונתנה לנו ארץ אשר הוא זבת חלב ודבש	8 If the LORD is pleased with us, he will bring us in and give us that land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
9 אך ביהוה אל תמרדו ואתם אל תיראו את עם הארץ כי לחמנו הם סר צלם מעליהם ויהוה אתנו אל תיראם	9 But do not rebel against the LORD! You need not be afraid of the people of that land; they are but food for us! Their defense has left them, but the LORD is with us. Therefore, do not be afraid of them."
10 ויאמרו כל העדה לרגום אתם באבנים וכבוד יהוה נראה באהל מועד אל כל בני ישראל	10 In answer, the whole community threatened to stone them. But then the glory of the LORD appeared at the meeting tent to all the Israelites.
11 ויאמר יהוה אל משה עד אנה ינאצני העם הזה ועד אנה לא יאמינו בי בכל האתות אשר עשיתי בקרבו	11 And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people spurn me? How long will they refuse to believe in me, despite all the signs I have performed among them?
12 אכנו בדבר ואורשנו ואעשה אתך לגוי גדול ועצום ממנו	12 I will strike them with pestilence and wipe them out. Then I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."
13 ויאמר משה אל יהוה ושמעו מצרים כי העלית בכחך את העם הזה מקרבו	13 But Moses said to the LORD: "Are the Egyptians to hear of this? For by your power you brought out this people from among them.
14 ואמרו אל יושב הארץ הזאת שמעו כי אתה יהוה בקרב העם הזה אשר עין בעין נראה אתה יהוה ועננך עמד עלהם ובעמד ענן אתה הלך לפניהם יומם ובעמוד אש לילה	14 And are they to tell of it to the inhabitants of this land? It has been heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people; you, LORD, who plainly reveal yourself! Your cloud stands over them, and you go before them by day in a column of cloud and by night in a column of fire.
15 והמתה את העם הזה כאיש אחד ואמרו הגוים אשר שמעו את שמעך לאמר	15 If now you slay this whole people, the nations who have heard such reports of you will say,
16 מבלתי יכלת יהוה להביא את העם הזה אל הארץ אשר נשבע להם וישחטם במדבר	16 'The LORD was not able to bring this people into the land he swore to give them; that is why he slaughtered them in the desert.'
17 ועתה יגדל נא כח אדני כאשר דברת לאמר	17 Now then, let the power of my Lord be displayed in its greatness, even as you have said,
18 יהוה ארך אפים ורב חסד נשא עון ופשע ונקה לא ינקה פקד עון אבות על בנים על שלשים ועל רבעים	18 'The LORD is slow to anger and rich in kindness, forgiving wickedness and crime; yet not declaring the guilty guiltless, but punishing children to the third and fourth generation for their fathers' wickedness.'
19 סלח נא לעון העם הזה כגדל חסדך וכאשר נשאתה לעם הזה ממצרים ועד הנה	19 Pardon, then, the wickedness of this people in keeping with your great kindness, even as you have forgiven them from Egypt until now."
20 ויאמר יהוה סלחתי כדברך	20 The LORD answered: "I pardon them as you have asked.
21 ואולם חי אני וימלא כבוד יהוה את כל הארץ	21 Yet, by my life and the LORD'S glory that fills the whole earth,
22 כי כל האנשים הראים את כבדי ואת אתתי אשר עשיתי במצרים ובמדבר וינסו אתי זה עשר פעמים ולא שמעו בקולי	22 of all the men who have seen my glory and the signs I worked in Egypt and in the desert, and who nevertheless have put me to the test ten times already and have failed to heed my voice,
23 אם יראו את הארץ אשר נשבעתי לאבתם וכל מנאצי לא יראוה	23 not one shall see the land which I promised on oath to their fathers. None of these who have spurned me shall see it.
24 ועבדי כלב עקב היתה רוח אחרת עמו וימלא אחרי והביאתיו אל הארץ אשר בא שמה וזרעו יורשנה	24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me unreservedly, I will bring him into the land where he has just been, and his descendants shall possess it.
25 והעמלקי והכנעני יושב בעמק מחר פנו וסעו לכם המדבר דרך ים סוף	25 But now, since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn away tomorrow and set out in the desert on the Red Sea road."
26 וידבר יהוה אל משה ואל אהרן לאמר	26 The LORD also said to Moses and Aaron:
27 עד מתי לעדה הרעה הזאת אשר המה מלינים עלי את תלנות בני ישראל אשר המה מלינים עלי שמעתי	27 "How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the Israelites against me.
28 אמר אלהם חי אני נאם יהוה אם לא כאשר דברתם באזני כן אעשה לכם	28 Tell them: By my life, says the LORD, I will do to you just what I have heard you say.
29 במדבר הזה יפלו פגריכם וכל פקדיכם לכל מספרכם מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה אשר הלינתם עלי	29 Here in the desert shall your dead bodies fall. Of all your men of twenty years or more, registered in the census, who grumbled against me,
30 אם אתם תבאו אל הארץ אשר נשאתי את ידי לשכן אתכם בה כי אם כלב בן יפנה ויהושע בן נון	30 not one shall enter the land where I solemnly swore to settle you, except Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun.
31 וטפכם אשר אמרתם לבז יהיה והביאתי אתם וידעו את הארץ אשר מאסתם בה	31 Your little ones, however, who you said would be taken as booty, I will bring in, and they shall appreciate the land you spurned.
32 ופגריכם אתם יפלו במדבר הזה	32 But as for you, your bodies shall fall here in the desert,
33 ובניכם יהיו רעים במדבר ארבעים שנה ונשאו את זנותיכם עד תם פגריכם במדבר	33 here where your children must wander for forty years, suffering for your faithlessness, till the last of you lies dead in the desert.
34 במספר הימים אשר תרתם את הארץ ארבעים יום יום לשנה יום לשנה תשאו את עונתיכם ארבעים שנה וידעתם את תנואתי	34 Forty days you spent in scouting the land; forty years shall you suffer for your crimes: one year for each day. Thus you will realize what it means to oppose me.
35 אני יהוה דברתי אם לא זאת אעשה לכל העדה הרעה הזאת הנועדים עלי במדבר הזה יתמו ושם ימתו	35 I, the LORD, have sworn to do this to all this wicked community that conspired against me: here in the desert they shall die to the last man."
36 והאנשים אשר שלח משה לתור את הארץ וישבו וילונו עליו את כל העדה להוציא דבה על הארץ	36 And so it happened to the men whom Moses had sent to reconnoiter the land and who on returning had set the whole community grumbling against him by spreading discouraging reports about the land;
37 וימתו האנשים מוצאי דבת הארץ רעה במגפה לפני יהוה	37 these men who had given out the bad report about the land were struck down by the LORD and died.
38 ויהושע בן נון וכלב בן יפנה חיו מן האנשים ההם ההלכים לתור את הארץ	38 Of all the men who had gone to reconnoiter the land, only Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, survived.
39 וידבר משה את הדברים האלה אל כל בני ישראל ויתאבלו העם מאד	39 When Moses repeated these words to all the Israelites, the people felt great remorse.
40 וישכמו בבקר ויעלו אל ראש ההר לאמר הננו ועלינו אל המקום אשר אמר יהוה כי חטאנו	40 Early the next morning they started up into the foothills, saying, "Here we are, ready to go up to the place that the LORD spoke of: for we were indeed doing wrong."
41 ויאמר משה למה זה אתם עברים את פי יהוה והוא לא תצלח	41 But Moses said, "Why are you again disobeying the LORD'S orders? This cannot succeed.
42 אל תעלו כי אין יהוה בקרבכם ולא תנגפו לפני איביכם	42 Do not go up, because the LORD is not in your midst; if you go, you will be beaten down before your enemies.
43 כי העמלקי והכנעני שם לפניכם ונפלתם בחרב כי על כן שבתם מאחרי יהוה ולא יהיה יהוה עמכם	43 For there the Amalekites and Canaanites face you, and you will fall by the sword. You have turned back from following the LORD; therefore the LORD will not be with you."
44 ויעפלו לעלות אל ראש ההר וארון ברית יהוה ומשה לא משו מקרב המחנה	44 Yet they dared to go up into the foothills, even though neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses left the camp.
45 וירד העמלקי והכנעני הישב בהר ההוא ויכום ויכתום עד החרמה	45 And the Amalekites and Canaanites who dwelt in that hill country came down and defeated them, beating them back as far as Hormah.
