Bereshìt (בראשית) - Genesi 3

MODERN HEBREW BIBLE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 והנחש היה ערום מכל חית השדה אשר עשה יהוה אלהים ויאמר אל האשה אף כי אמר אלהים לא תאכלו מכל עץ הגן	1 Now, the snake was the most subtle of al the wild animals that Yahweh God had made. It asked thewoman, 'Did God real y say you were not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?'
2 ותאמר האשה אל הנחש מפרי עץ הגן נאכל	2 The woman answered the snake, 'We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden.
3 ומפרי העץ אשר בתוך הגן אמר אלהים לא תאכלו ממנו ולא תגעו בו פן תמתון	3 But of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, "You must not eat it, nor touch it, underpain of death." '
4 ויאמר הנחש אל האשה לא מות תמתון	4 Then the snake said to the woman, 'No! You will not die!
5 כי ידע אלהים כי ביום אכלכם ממנו ונפקחו עיניכם והייתם כאלהים ידעי טוב ורע	5 God knows in fact that the day you eat it your eyes wil be opened and you wil be like gods, knowinggood from evil.'
6 ותרא האשה כי טוב העץ למאכל וכי תאוה הוא לעינים ונחמד העץ להשכיל ותקח מפריו ותאכל ותתן גם לאישה עמה ויאכל	6 The woman saw that the tree was good to eat and pleasing to the eye, and that it was enticing for thewisdom that it could give. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who waswith her, and he ate it.
7 ותפקחנה עיני שניהם וידעו כי עירמם הם ויתפרו עלה תאנה ויעשו להם חגרת	7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realised that they were naked. So they sewed fig-leaves together to make themselves loin-cloths.
8 וישמעו את קול יהוה אלהים מתהלך בגן לרוח היום ויתחבא האדם ואשתו מפני יהוה אלהים בתוך עץ הגן	8 The man and his wife heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, andthey hid from Yahweh God among the trees of the garden.
9 ויקרא יהוה אלהים אל האדם ויאמר לו איכה	9 But Yahweh God called to the man. 'Where are you?' he asked.
10 ויאמר את קלך שמעתי בגן ואירא כי עירם אנכי ואחבא	10 'I heard the sound of you in the garden,' he replied. 'I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.'
11 ויאמר מי הגיד לך כי עירם אתה המן העץ אשר צויתיך לבלתי אכל ממנו אכלת	11 'Who told you that you were naked?' he asked. 'Have you been eating from the tree I forbade you toeat?'
12 ויאמר האדם האשה אשר נתתה עמדי הוא נתנה לי מן העץ ואכל	12 The man replied, 'It was the woman you put with me; she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ateit.'
13 ויאמר יהוה אלהים לאשה מה זאת עשית ותאמר האשה הנחש השיאני ואכל	13 Then Yahweh God said to the woman, 'Why did you do that?' The woman replied, 'The snake temptedme and I ate.'
14 ויאמר יהוה אלהים אל הנחש כי עשית זאת ארור אתה מכל הבהמה ומכל חית השדה על גחנך תלך ועפר תאכל כל ימי חייך	14 Then Yahweh God said to the snake, 'Because you have done this, Accursed be you of al animalswild and tame! On your bel y you wil go and on dust you will feed as long as you live.
15 ואיבה אשית בינך ובין האשה ובין זרעך ובין זרעה הוא ישופך ראש ואתה תשופנו עקב	15 I shal put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; it wil bruiseyour head and you wil strike its heel.'
16 אל האשה אמר הרבה ארבה עצבונך והרנך בעצב תלדי בנים ואל אישך תשוקתך והוא ימשל בך	16 To the woman he said: I shal give you intense pain in childbearing, you will give birth to your childrenin pain. Your yearning wil be for your husband, and he wil dominate you.
17 ולאדם אמר כי שמעת לקול אשתך ותאכל מן העץ אשר צויתיך לאמר לא תאכל ממנו ארורה האדמה בעבורך בעצבון תאכלנה כל ימי חייך	17 To the man he said, 'Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from the tree of which Ihad forbidden you to eat, Accursed be the soil because of you! Painful y will you get your food from it as long asyou live.
18 וקוץ ודרדר תצמיח לך ואכלת את עשב השדה	18 It wil yield you brambles and thistles, as you eat the produce of the land.
19 בזעת אפיך תאכל לחם עד שובך אל האדמה כי ממנה לקחת כי עפר אתה ואל עפר תשוב	19 By the sweat of your face will you earn your food, until you return to the ground, as you were takenfrom it. For dust you are and to dust you shall return.'
20 ויקרא האדם שם אשתו חוה כי הוא היתה אם כל חי	20 The man named his wife 'Eve' because she was the mother of all those who live.
21 ויעש יהוה אלהים לאדם ולאשתו כתנות עור וילבשם	21 Yahweh God made tunics of skins for the man and his wife and clothed them.
22 ויאמר יהוה אלהים הן האדם היה כאחד ממנו לדעת טוב ורע ועתה פן ישלח ידו ולקח גם מעץ החיים ואכל וחי לעלם	22 Then Yahweh God said, 'Now that the man has become like one of us in knowing good from evil, hemust not be al owed to reach out his hand and pick from the tree of life too, and eat and live for ever!'
23 וישלחהו יהוה אלהים מגן עדן לעבד את האדמה אשר לקח משם	23 So Yahweh God expelled him from the garden of Eden, to til the soil from which he had been taken.
24 ויגרש את האדם וישכן מקדם לגן עדן את הכרבים ואת להט החרב המתהפכת לשמר את דרך עץ החיים	24 He banished the man, and in front of the garden of Eden he posted the great winged creatures andthe fiery flashing sword, to guard the way to the tree of life.
