1 Quanto è bella la nazione casta con gloria! perocché la memoria di lei è, immortale, perché ella è conosciuta dinanzi a Dio, e dinanzi agli uomini.	1 Better is childlessness with virtue; for immortal is its memory: because both by God is it acknowledged, and by men.
2 La imitano quand'ella è presente; e la desiderano quand'ella è partita, e coronata trionfa nell'eternità, vinto il premio de' casti combattimenti.	2 When it is present men imitate it, and they long for it when it is gone; And forever it marches crowned in triumph, victorious in unsullied deeds of valor.
3 Ma la moltiplica la turba degli empj non è più buona a nulla, e le piante bastarde non gettaran profonde radici, e non avranno stabile fondamento.	3 But the numerous progeny of the wicked shall be of no avail; their spurious offshoots shall not strike deep root nor take firm hold.
4 Che se per un tempo nei rami loro germogliano, avendo debile appoggio, sono scosse dal vento, e sbarbate da turbine violento.	4 For even though their branches flourish for a time, they are unsteady and shall be rocked by the wind and, by the violence of the winds, uprooted;
5 Onde saranno spezzati i loro rami in sul crescere, e i loro frutti saran cattivi, e acerbi al gusto, e non buoni a nulla.	5 Their twigs shall be broken off untimely, and their fruit be useless, unripe for eating, and fit for nothing.
6 Imperocché i figliuoli, che nascono da illegittima unione, son testimoni, che accusano la impudicizia de' genitori ogni volta, che siano interrogati.	6 For children born of lawless unions give evidence of the wickedness of their parents, when they are examined.
7 Ma il giusto quando avanti tempo egli muoia, trova sua requie;	7 But the just man, though he die early, shall be at rest.
8 Perocché venerabil vecchiezza si è non quella di lunga durata, e che dal numero degli anni si estima;	8 For the age that is honorable comes not with the passing of time, nor can it be measured in terms of years.
9 Ma la canizie dell'uomo ne' sentimenti di lui si ritrova, e la vita senza macchia è vecchiezza.	9 Rather, understanding is the hoary crown for men, and an unsullied life, the attainment of old age.
10 Ivi ch'ei piacque a Dio, fu amato da lui, e perché trai peccatori vivea, altrove fu traportato:	10 He who pleased God was loved; he who lived among sinners was transported--
11 Fu rapito, affinché la malizia non alterasse il suo spirito, o la seduzione non inducesse l'anima di lui in errore.	11 Snatched away, lest wickedness pervert his mind or deceit beguile his soul;
12 Perocché l'affascinamento della vanità oscura il bene, e la vertigine della concupiscenza sovverte l'animo sincero.	12 For the witchery of paltry things obscures what is right and the whirl of desire transforms the innocent mind.
13 Stagionato egli in breve tempo compiè una lunga carriera;	13 Having become perfect in a short while, he reached the fullness of a long career;
14 Conciossiacbe era cara a Dio l'anima di lui: per questo egli si affrettò di trarlo di mezzo alle iniquità. Le genti poi veggono queste cose, e non le comprendono, né in cuor loro riflettono,	14 for his soul was pleasing to the LORD, therefore he sped him out of the midst of wickedness. But the people saw and did not understand, nor did they take this into account.
15 Come beneficio di Dio egli è questo, e misericordia verso i suoi santi, e come egli ha cura de' suoi eletti.	15
16 Ma il giusto morto condanna gli empj che vivono, e la giovinezza loro sì presto estinta condanna la lunga vita del peccatore.	16 Yes, the just man dead condemns the sinful who live, and youth swiftly completed condemns the many years of the wicked man grown old.
17 Quelli però vedranno la fine dell'uomo saggio, e non comprenderanno quali siano stati i disegni di Dio sopra di lui, né perché il Signore lo abbia messo in sicuro.	17 For they see the death of the wise man and do not understand what the LORD intended for him, or why he made him secure.
18 Vedranno, e lo avranno in dispregio; ma il Signore si burlerà di loro:	18 They see, and hold him in contempt; but the LORD laughs them to scorn.
19 Ed eglino dipoi anderanno vergognosamente per terra, e trai morti saranno in eterna ignominia; perocché Dio conquiderà i superbi fatti già mutoli, e gli scuoterà dai fondamenti, e li ridurrà in estrema desolazione, ed ei saranno in gemiti, e anderà in fumo la loro memoria.	19 And they shall afterward become dishonored corpses and an unceasing mockery among the dead. For he shall strike them down speechless and prostrate and rock them to their foundations; They shall be utterly laid waste and shall be in grief and their memory shall perish.
20 Verran fuori tutti paura, rammentandosi i lor peccati, e le loro iniquità stando a petto di essi li convinceranno.	20 Fearful shall they come, at the counting up of their sins, and their lawless deeds shall convict them to their face.
