ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣΤΗΣ - Qoelet - Ecclesiastes 6

LXXNEW JERUSALEM
1 εστιν πονηρια ην ειδον υπο τον ηλιον και πολλη εστιν επι τον ανθρωπον1 I see another evil under the sun, which goes hard with people:
2 ανηρ ω δωσει αυτω ο θεος πλουτον και υπαρχοντα και δοξαν και ουκ εστιν υστερων τη ψυχη αυτου απο παντων ων επιθυμησει και ουκ εξουσιασει αυτω ο θεος του φαγειν απ' αυτου οτι ανηρ ξενος φαγεται αυτον τουτο ματαιοτης και αρρωστια πονηρα εστιν2 suppose someone has received from God riches, property, honours -- nothing at al left to wish for; butGod does not give the chance to enjoy them, and some stranger enjoys them. This is futile, and grievoussuffering too.
3 εαν γεννηση ανηρ εκατον και ετη πολλα ζησεται και πληθος ο τι εσονται ημεραι ετων αυτου και ψυχη αυτου ουκ εμπλησθησεται απο της αγαθωσυνης και γε ταφη ουκ εγενετο αυτω ειπα αγαθον υπερ αυτον το εκτρωμα3 Or take someone who has had a hundred children and lived for many years, and, having reached oldage, has never enjoyed the good things of life and has not even got a tomb; it seems to me, a still-born child ishappier.
4 οτι εν ματαιοτητι ηλθεν και εν σκοτει πορευεται και εν σκοτει ονομα αυτου καλυφθησεται4 In futility it came, into darkness it departs, and in darkness will its name be buried.
5 και γε ηλιον ουκ ειδεν και ουκ εγνω αναπαυσις τουτω υπερ τουτον5 It has never so much as seen or known the sun; al the same, it wil rest more easily than that person,
6 και ει εζησεν χιλιων ετων καθοδους και αγαθωσυνην ουκ ειδεν μη ουκ εις τοπον ενα τα παντα πορευεται6 who would never have known the good things of life, even by living a thousand years twice over. Do wenot al go to the same place in the end?
7 πας μοχθος του ανθρωπου εις στομα αυτου και γε η ψυχη ου πληρωθησεται7 Al toil is for the mouth, yet the appetite is never satisfied.
8 οτι τις περισσεια τω σοφω υπερ τον αφρονα διοτι ο πενης οιδεν πορευθηναι κατεναντι της ζωης8 What advantage has the wise over the fool? And what of the pauper who knows how to behave insociety?
9 αγαθον οραμα οφθαλμων υπερ πορευομενον ψυχη και γε τουτο ματαιοτης και προαιρεσις πνευματος9 Better the object seen than the sting of desire: for the latter too is futile and chasing after the wind.
10 ει τι εγενετο ηδη κεκληται ονομα αυτου και εγνωσθη ο εστιν ανθρωπος και ου δυνησεται του κριθηναι μετα του ισχυρου υπερ αυτον10 What has been is already defined -- we know what people are: They cannot bring to justice one who isstronger than themselves.
11 οτι εισιν λογοι πολλοι πληθυνοντες ματαιοτητα τι περισσον τω ανθρωπω11 The more we say, the more futile it is: what good can we derive from it?
12 οτι τις οιδεν τι αγαθον τω ανθρωπω εν τη ζωη αριθμον ημερων ζωης ματαιοτητος αυτου και εποιησεν αυτας εν σκια οτι τις απαγγελει τω ανθρωπω τι εσται οπισω αυτου υπο τον ηλιον12 And who knows what is best for someone during life, during the days of futile life which are spent like ashadow? Who can tel anyone what wil happen after him under the sun?
