1 Maccabée, avec ses compagnons, recouvra sous la conduite du Seigneur le sanctuaire et laville	1 Now Maccabeus and his company, the Lord guiding them, recovered the temple and the city:
2 et détruisit les autels élevés par les étrangers sur la place publique ainsi que les lieux du culte.	2 But the altars which the heathen had built in the open street, and also the chapels, they pulled down.
3 Une fois le Temple purifié, ils bâtirent un autre autel, puis, ayant tiré des étincelles de pierresà feu, ils prirent de ce feu et, après deux ans d'interruption, ils offrirent un sacrifice, firent fumer l'encens,allumèrent les lampes et exposèrent les pains de proposition.	3 And having cleansed the temple they made another altar, and striking stones they took fire out of them, and offered a sacrifice after two years, and set forth incense, and lights, and shewbread.
4 Cela fait, prosternés sur le ventre, ils prièrent le Seigneur de ne plus les laisser tomber dansde tels maux, mais de les corriger avec mesure, s'il leur arrivait jamais de pécher, et de ne pas les livrer auxnations blasphématrices et barbares.	4 When that was done, they fell flat down, and besought the Lord that they might come no more into such troubles; but if they sinned any more against him, that he himself would chasten them with mercy, and that they might not be delivered unto the blasphemous and barbarous nations.
5 Ce fut le jour même où le Temple avait été profané par les étrangers que tomba le jour de lapurification du Temple, c'est-à-dire le 25 du même mois qui est Kisleu.	5 Now upon the same day that the strangers profaned the temple, on the very same day it was cleansed again, even the five and twentieth day of the same month, which is Casleu.
6 Ils célébrèrent avec allégresse huit jours de fête à la manière des Tentes, se souvenantcomment naguère, aux jours de la fête des Tentes, ils gîtaient dans les montagnes et dans les grottes à la façondes bêtes sauvages.	6 And they kept the eight days with gladness, as in the feast of the tabernacles, remembering that not long afore they had held the feast of the tabernacles, when as they wandered in the mountains and dens like beasts.
7 C'est pourquoi, portant des thyrses, de beaux rameaux et des palmes, ils firent monter deshymnes vers Celui qui avait mené à bien la purification de son lieu saint.	7 Therefore they bare branches, and fair boughs, and palms also, and sang psalms unto him that had given them good success in cleansing his place.
8 Ils décrétèrent par un édit public confirmé par un vote que toute la nation des Juifssolenniserait chaque année ces jours-là.	8 They ordained also by a common statute and decree, That every year those days should be kept of the whole nation of the Jews.
9 Telles furent donc les circonstances de la mort d'Antiochus surnommé Epiphane.	9 And this was the end of Antiochus, called Epiphanes.
10 Nous allons maintenant exposer les faits qui concernent Antiochus Eupator, fils de cetimpie, en résumant les maux causés par les guerres.	10 Now will we declare the acts of Antiochus Eupator, who was the son of this wicked man, gathering briefly the calamities of the wars.
11 Ayant hérité du royaume, ce prince promut à la tête des affaires un certain Lysias, stratègeen chef de Coelé-Syrie et Phénicie.	11 So when he was come to the crown, he set one Lysias over the affairs of his realm, and appointed him his chief governor of Celosyria and Phenice.
12 Quant à Ptolémée, surnommé Makrôn, le premier à observer la justice envers les Juifs, àcause des torts qu'on leur infligeait, il s'était efforcé de les administrer pacifiquement.	12 For Ptolemeus, that was called Macron, choosing rather to do justice unto the Jews for the wrong that had been done unto them, endeavoured to continue peace with them.
13 Accusé en conséquence par les amis du roi auprès d'Eupator, il s'entendait, en touteoccasion, appeler traître, pour avoir abandonné Chypre que lui avait confié Philométor, avoir passé du côtéd'Antiochus Epiphane et n'avoir pas fait honneur à la dignité de sa charge: il quitta l'existence en s'empoisonnant.	13 Whereupon being accused of the king's friends before Eupator, and called traitor at every word because he had left Cyprus, that Philometor had committed unto him, and departed to Antiochus Epiphanes, and seeing that he was in no honourable place, he was so discouraged, that he poisoned himself and died.
14 Gorgias, devenu stratège de la région, entretenait des troupes mercenaires et saisissait toutesles occasions pour faire la guerre aux Juifs.	14 But when Gorgias was governor of the holds, he hired soldiers, and nourished war continually with the Jews:
15 En même temps, les Iduméens, maîtres de forteresses bien situées, harcelaient les Juifs, et,accueillant les proscrits de Jérusalem, tentaient de fomenter la guerre.	15 And therewithall the Idumeans, having gotten into their hands the most commodious holds, kept the Jews occupied, and receiving those that were banished from Jerusalem, they went about to nourish war.
16 Maccabée et ses compagnons, après avoir fait des prières publiques et demandé à Dieu de sefaire leur allié, se mirent en mouvement contre les forteresses des Iduméens.	16 Then they that were with Maccabeus made supplication, and besought God that he would be their helper; and so they ran with violence upon the strong holds of the Idumeans,
17 Les ayant attaquées avec vigueur, ils se rendirent maîtres de ces positions et repoussèrenttous ceux qui combattaient sur le rempart; ils égorgeaient quiconque tombait entre leurs mains, ils n'en tuèrentpas moins de 20.000.	17 And assaulting them strongly, they won the holds, and kept off all that fought upon the wall, and slew all that fell into their hands, and killed no fewer than twenty thousand.
18 9.000 hommes au moins s'étant réfugiés dans deux tours remarquablement fortes, ayant aveceux tout ce qu'il faut pour soutenir un siège,	18 And because certain, who were no less than nine thousand, were fled together into two very strong castles, having all manner of things convenient to sustain the siege,
19 Maccabée laissa pour les assiéger Simon et Joseph avec Zacchée et les siens en nombresuffisant, et partit en personne pour des endroits où il y avait urgence.	19 Maccabeus left Simon and Joseph, and Zaccheus also, and them that were with him, who were enough to besiege them, and departed himself unto those places which more needed his help.
20 Mais les gens de Simon, avides de richesses, se laissèrent gagner à prix d'argent parquelques-uns de ceux qui gardaient les tours et, pour une somme de 70.000 drachmes, ils en laissèrent s'échapperun certain nombre.	20 Now they that were with Simon, being led with covetousness, were persuaded for money through certain of those that were in the castle, and took seventy thousand drachms, and let some of them escape.
21 Quand on eut annoncé à Maccabée ce qui était arrivé, il réunit les chefs du peuple, il accusales coupables d'avoir vendu leurs frères à prix d'argent en relâchant contre eux leurs ennemis.	21 But when it was told Maccabeus what was done, he called the governors of the people together, and accused those men, that they had sold their brethren for money, and set their enemies free to fight against them.
22 Il les fit donc exécuter comme traîtres et aussitôt après il s'empara des deux tours.	22 So he slew those that were found traitors, and immediately took the two castles.
23 Menant tout à bonne fin par la valeur de ses armes, il tua dans ces deux forteresses plus de20.000 hommes.	23 And having good success with his weapons in all things he took in hand, he slew in the two holds more than twenty thousand.
24 Timothée, qui avait été battu précédemment par les Juifs, ayant levé des forces étrangères engrand nombre et réuni quantité de chevaux venus d'Asie, parut bientôt en Judée, s'imaginant qu'il allait s'enrendre maître par les armes.	24 Now Timotheus, whom the Jews had overcome before, when he had gathered a great multitude of foreign forces, and horses out of Asia not a few, came as though he would take Jewry by force of arms.
25 A son approche, Maccabée et ses hommes se répandirent en supplications devant Dieu, latête saupoudrée de terre et les reins ceints d'un cilice.	25 But when he drew near, they that were with Maccabeus turned themselves to pray unto God, and sprinkled earth upon their heads, and girded their loins with sackcloth,
26 Prosternés contre le soubassement antérieur de l'autel, ils demandaient à Dieu de leur êtrefavorable, de se déclarer l'ennemi de leurs ennemis, l'adversaire de leurs adversaires, suivant les clairesexpressions de la Loi.	26 And fell down at the foot of the altar, and besought him to be merciful to them, and to be an enemy to their enemies, and an adversary to their adversaries, as the law declareth.
27 Ayant pris les armes au sortir de cette prière, ils s'avancèrent hors de la ville, jusqu'à unesérieuse distance, et, quand ils furent près de l'ennemi, ils s'arrêtèrent.	27 So after the prayer they took their weapons, and went on further from the city: and when they drew near to their enemies, they kept by themselves.
28 Au moment même où se diffusait la clarté du soleil levant, ils en vinrent aux mains de partet d'autre, les uns ayant pour gage du succès et de la victoire, outre leur vaillance, le recours au Seigneur, lesautres prenant leur emportement pour guide des batailles.	28 Now the sun being newly risen, they joined both together; the one part having together with their virtue their refuge also unto the Lord for a pledge of their success and victory: the other side making their rage leader of their battle
29 Au fort du combat, apparurent du ciel aux ennemis, sur des chevaux aux freins d'or, cinqhommes magnifiques qui se mirent à la tête des Juifs	29 But when the battle waxed strong, there appeared unto the enemies from heaven five comely men upon horses, with bridles of gold, and two of them led the Jews,
30 et, prenant en même temps Maccabée au milieu d'eux et le couvrant de leurs armures, legardaient invulnérable. Ils lançaient aussi des traits et la foudre sur les adversaires qui, bouleversés parl'éblouissement, se dispersaient dans le plus grand désordre.	30 And took Maccabeus betwixt them, and covered him on every side weapons, and kept him safe, but shot arrows and lightnings against the enemies: so that being confounded with blindness, and full of trouble, they were killed.
31 20.500 fantassins et 600 cavaliers furent alors égorgés.	31 And there were slain of footmen twenty thousand and five hundred, and six hundred horsemen.
32 Quant à Timothée, il s'enfuit en personne dans une place très forte appelée Gazara, oùChéréas était stratège.	32 As for Timotheus himself, he fled into a very strong hold, called Gawra, where Chereas was governor.
33 Pendant quatre jours, Maccabée et les siens l'assiégèrent avec une ardeur joyeuse.	33 But they that were with Maccabeus laid siege against the fortress courageously four days.
34 Confiants dans la force de la place, ceux qui se trouvaient à l'intérieur proféraient d'énormesblasphèmes et lançaient des paroles impies.	34 And they that were within, trusting to the strength of the place, blasphemed exceedingly, and uttered wicked words.
35 Le cinquième jour commençant à poindre, vingt jeunes gens de la troupe de Maccabée, queles blasphèmes avaient enflammés de colère, s'élancèrent contre la muraille, animés d'un mâle courage et d'uneardeur farouche, et ils massacrèrent quiconque se présentait devant eux.	35 Nevertheless upon the fifth day early twenty young men of Maccabeus' company, inflamed with anger because of the blasphemies, assaulted the wall manly, and with a fierce courage killed all that they met withal.
36 D'autres montaient pareillement contre les assiégés en les prenant à revers, mettaient le feuaux tours et, ayant allumé des bûchers, brûlèrent vifs les blasphémateurs. Cependant, brisant les portes, lespremiers accueillirent le reste de l'armée et à leur tête s'emparèrent de la ville.	36 Others likewise ascending after them, whiles they were busied with them that were within, burnt the towers, and kindling fires burnt the blasphemers alive; and others broke open the gates, and, having received in the rest of the army, took the city,
37 Ils égorgèrent Timothée, qui s'était caché dans une citerne, et avec lui son frère Chéréas etApollophane.	37 And killed Timotheus, that was hid in a certain pit, and Chereas his brother, with Apollophanes.
38 Après avoir accompli ces exploits, ils bénirent avec des hymnes et des louanges le Seigneurqui accordait de si grands bienfaits à Israël et qui lui donnait la victoire.	38 When this was done, they praised the Lord with psalms and thanksgiving, who had done so great things for Israel, and given them the victory.
