Acts of the Apostles 4

1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the officer of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,	1 While they were stil talking to the people the priests came up to them, accompanied by the captain ofthe Temple and the Sadducees.
2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead:	2 They were extremely annoyed at their teaching the people the resurrection from the dead by proclaimingthe resurrection of Jesus.
3 And they laid hands upon them, and put them in hold till the next day; for it was now evening.	3 They arrested them, and, as it was already late, they kept them in prison till the next day.
4 But many of them who had heard the word, believed; and the number of the men was made five thousand.	4 But many of those who had listened to their message became believers; the total number of men hadnow risen to something like five thousand.
5 And it came to pass on the morrow, that their princes, and ancients, and scribes, were gathered together in Jerusalem;	5 It happened that the next day the rulers, elders and scribes held a meeting in Jerusalem
6 And Annas the high priest, and Caiphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest.	6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, Jonathan, Alexander and al the members of the high-priestlyfamilies.
7 And setting them in the midst, they asked: By what power, or by what name, have you done this?	7 They made the prisoners stand in the middle and began to interrogate them, 'By what power, and bywhose name have you men done this?'
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said to them: Ye princes of the people, and ancients, hear:	8 Then Peter, fil ed with the Holy Spirit, addressed them, 'Rulers of the people, and elders!
9 If we this day are examined concerning the good deed done to the infirm man, by what means he hath been made whole:	9 If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a cripple and asking us how he was healed,
10 Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God hath raised from the dead, even by him this man standeth here before you whole.	10 you must know, all of you, and the whole people of Israel, that it is by the name of Jesus Christ theNazarene, whom you crucified, and God raised from the dead, by this name and by no other that this manstands before you cured.
11 This is the stone which was rejected by you the builders, which is become the head of the corner.	11 This is the stone which you, the builders, rejected but which has become the cornerstone. Only in himis there salvation;
12 Neither is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved.	12 for of al the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved.'
13 Now seeing the constancy of Peter and of John, understanding that they were illiterate and ignorant men, they wondered; and they knew them that they had been with Jesus.	13 They were astonished at the fearlessness shown by Peter and John, considering that they wereuneducated laymen; and they recognised them as associates of Jesus;
14 Seeing the man also who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.	14 but when they saw the man who had been cured standing by their side, they could find no answer.
15 But they commanded them to go aside out of the council; and they conferred among themselves,	15 So they ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin had a private discussion.
16 Saying: What shall we do to these men? for indeed a known miracle hath been done by them, to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: it is manifest, and we cannot deny it.	16 'What are we going to do with these men?' they asked. 'It is obvious to everybody in Jerusalem that anotable miracle has been worked through them, and we cannot deny it.
17 But that it may be no farther spread among the people, let us threaten them that they speak no more in this name to any man.	17 But to stop the whole thing spreading any further among the people, let us threaten them against everspeaking to anyone in this name again.'
18 And calling them, they charged them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of Jesus.	18 So they cal ed them in and gave them a warning on no account to make statements or to teach in thename of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John answering, said to them: If it be just in the sight of God, to hear you rather than God, judge ye.	19 But Peter and John retorted, 'You must judge whether in God's eyes it is right to listen to you and not toGod.
20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.	20 We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard.'
21 But they threatening, sent them away, not finding how they might punish them, because of the people; for all men glorified what had been done, in that which had come to pass.	21 The court repeated the threats and then released them; they could not think of any way to punish them,since al the people were giving glory to God for what had happened.
22 For the man was above forty years old, in whom that miraculous cure had been wrought.	22 The man who had been miraculously cured was over forty years old.
23 And being let go, they came to their own company, and related all that the chief priests and ancients had said to them.	23 As soon as they were released they went to the community and told them everything the chief priestsand elders had said to them.
24 Who having heard it, with one accord lifted up their voice to God, and said: Lord, thou art he that didst make heaven and earth, the sea, and all things that are in them.	24 When they heard it they lifted up their voice to God with one heart. 'Master,' they prayed, 'it is you who made sky and earth and sea, and everything in them;
25 Who, by the Holy Ghost, by the mouth of our father David, thy servant, hast said: Why did the Gentiles rage, and the people meditate vain things?	25 it is you who said through the Holy Spirit and speaking through our ancestor David, your servant: Whythis uproar among the nations, this impotent muttering of the peoples?
26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes assembled together against the Lord and his Christ.	26 Kings on earth take up position, princes plot together against the Lord and his Anointed.
27 For of a truth there assembled together in this city against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel,	27 'This is what has come true: in this very city Herod and Pontius Pilate plotted together with the gentilenations and the peoples of Israel, against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,
28 To do what thy hand and thy counsel decreed to be done.	28 to bring about the very thing that you in your strength and your wisdom had predetermined shouldhappen.
29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants, that with all confidence they may speak thy word,	29 And now, Lord, take note of their threats and help your servants to proclaim your message with alfearlessness,
30 By stretching forth thy hand to cures, and signs, and wonders to be done by the name of thy holy Son Jesus.	30 by stretching out your hand to heal and to work miracles and marvels through the name of your holyservant Jesus.'
31 And when they had prayed, the place was moved wherein they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spoke the word of God with confidence.	31 As they prayed, the house where they were assembled rocked. From this time they were all fil ed withthe Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God fearlessly.
32 And the multitude of believers had but one heart and one soul: neither did any one say that aught of the things which he possessed, was his own; but all things were common unto them.	32 The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed private ownership of anypossessions, as everything they owned was held in common.
33 And with great power did the apostles give testimony of the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord; and great grace was in them all.	33 The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they wereal accorded great respect.
34 For neither was there any one needy among them. For as many as were owners of lands or houses, sold them, and brought the price of the things they sold,	34 None of their members was ever in want, as al those who owned land or houses would sel them, andbring the money from the sale of them,
35 And laid it down before the feet of the apostles. And distribution was made to every one, according as he had need.	35 to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any who might be in need.
36 And Joseph, who, by the apostles, was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, by interpretation, The son of consolation,) a Levite, a Cyprian born,	36 There was a Levite of Cypriot origin called Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas (whichmeans 'son of encouragement').
37 Having land, sold it, and brought the price, and laid it at the feet of the apostles.	37 He owned a piece of land and he sold it and brought the money and presented it to the apostles.
