DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.2 He was with God in the beginning.
All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made.3 Through him al things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.
In him was life, and the life was the light of men.4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;
And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.6 A man came, sent by God. His name was John.
This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him.7 He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, so that everyone might believe through him.
He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light.8 He was not the light, he was to bear witness to the light.
That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.9 The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.10 He was in the world that had come into being through him, and the world did not recognise him.
He came unto his own, and his own received him not.11 He came to his own and his own people did not accept him.
But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name.12 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believed inhis name
Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.13 who were born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God himself.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.14 The Word became flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that he has from theFather as only Son of the Father, ful of grace and truth.
John beareth witness of him, and crieth out, saying: This was he of whom I spoke: He that shall come after me, is preferred before me: because he was before me.15 John witnesses to him. He proclaims: 'This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me haspassed ahead of me because he existed before me.'
And of his fulness we all have received, and grace for grace.16 Indeed, from his ful ness we have, al of us, received -- one gift replacing another,
For the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.17 for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.
No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.18 No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made himknown.
And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to him, to ask him: Who art thou?19 This was the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to askhim, 'Who are you?'
And he confessed, and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ.20 He declared, he did not deny but declared, 'I am not the Christ.'
And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No.21 So they asked, 'Then are you Elijah?' He replied, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'
They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?22 So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What haveyou to say about yourself?'
He said: I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaias.23 So he said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice of one that cries in the desert: Prepare a way for theLord. Make his paths straight!'
And they that were sent, were of the Pharisees.24 Now those who had been sent were Pharisees,
And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?25 and they put this question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, andnot the Prophet?'
John answered them, saying: I baptize with water; but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not.26 John answered them, 'I baptise with water; but standing among you -- unknown to you-
The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose.27 is the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandal.'
These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.28 This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.
The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him, and he saith: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who taketh away the sin of the world.29 The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takesaway the sin of the world.
This is he, of whom I said: After me there cometh a man, who is preferred before me: because he was before me.30 It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existedbefore me."
And I knew him not, but that he may be made manifest in Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.31 I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might berevealed to Israel.'
And John gave testimony, saying: I saw the Spirit coming down, as a dove from heaven, and he remained upon him.32 And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.
And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptize with water, said to me: He upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining upon him, he it is that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.33 I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man onwhom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."
And I saw, and I gave testimony, that this is the Son of God.34 I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'
The next day again John stood, and two of his disciples.35 The next day as John stood there again with two of his disciples, Jesus went past,
And beholding Jesus walking, he saith: Behold the Lamb of God.36 and John looked towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God.'
And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.37 And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
And Jesus turning, and seeing them following him, saith to them: What seek you? Who said to him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?38 Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, 'What do you want?' They answered, 'Rabbi' --which means Teacher-'where do you live?'
He saith to them: Come and see. They came, and saw where he abode, and they stayed with him that day: now it was about the tenth hour.39 He replied, 'Come and see'; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day. It wasabout the tenth hour.
And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard of John, and followed him.40 One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, thebrother of Simon Peter.
He findeth first his brother Simon, and saith to him: We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and say to him, 'We have found the Messiah' -- whichmeans the Christ-
And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.42 and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John; you are to becal ed Cephas' -- which means Rock.
On the following day, he would go forth into Galilee, and he findeth Philip. And Jesus saith to him: Follow me.43 The next day, after Jesus had decided to leave for Galilee, he met Philip and said, 'Follow me.'
Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.44 Philip came from the same town, Bethsaida, as Andrew and Peter.
Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith to him: We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth.45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and theprophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'
And Nathanael said to him: Can any thing of good come from Nazareth? Philip saith to him: Come and see.46 Nathanael said to him, 'From Nazareth? Can anything good come from that place?' Philip replied,'Come and see.'
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him: and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an Israelite in whom there is nodeception.'
Nathanael saith to him: Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered, and said to him: Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.48 Nathanael asked, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw youunder the fig tree.'
Nathanael answered him, and said: Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel.49 Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the king of Israel.'
Jesus answered, and said to him: Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, thou believest: greater things than these shalt thou see.50 Jesus replied, 'You believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to seegreater things than that.'
And he saith to him: Amen, amen I say to you, you shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.51 And then he added, 'In al truth I tel you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascendingand descending over the Son of man.'
