1 And they went forward and encamped in the plains of Moab, over against where Jericho is situate beyond the Jordan.	1 Luego partieron los israelitas y acamparon en las Estepas de Moab, al otro lado del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.
2 And Balac the son of Sephor, seeing all that Israel had done to the Amorrhite,	2 Vio Balaq, hijo de Sippor, todo lo que había hecho Israel con los amorreos
3 And that the Moabites were in great fear of him, and were not able to sustain his assault,	3 y se estremeció Moab ante pueblo, pues era muy numeroso. Tuvo miedo Moab de los israelitas
4 He said to the elders of Madian: So will this people destroy all that dwell in our borders, as the ox is wont to eat the grass to the very roots. Now he was at that time king in Moab.	4 y dijo a los ancianos de Madián: «Ahora veréis cómo esa multitud va a devastarlo todo a nuestro alrededor, como devasta el buey la hierba del campo.» Balaq, hijo de Sippor, era rey de Moab por aquel tiempo.
5 He sent therefore messengers to Balaam the son of Beer, a soothsayer, who dwelt by the river of the land of the children of Ammon, to call him, and to say: Behold a people is come out of Egypt, that hath covered the face of the earth, sitting over against me.	5 Envió mensajeros a buscar a Balaam, hijo de Beor, a Petor del Río, en tierra de los hijos de Ammav, para decirle: «He aquí que el pueblo que ha salido de Egipto ha cubierto la superficie de la tierra y se ha establecido frente a mí.
6 Come therefore, and curse this people, because it is mightier than I: if by any means I may beat them and drive them out of my land: for I know that he whom thou shalt bless is blessed, and he whom thou shalt curse is cursed.	6 Ven, pues, por favor, maldíceme a ese pueblo, pues es más fuerte que yo, a ver si puedo vencerle y lo arrojo del país. Pues sé que el que tú bendices queda bendito y el que maldices, maldito.»
7 And the ancients of Moab, and the elders of Madian, went with the price of divination in their hands. And when they were come to Balaam, and had told him all the words of Balac:	7 Fueron los ancianos de Moab y los ancianos de Madián, con la paga del vaticinio en sus manos. Llegaron donde Balaam y le dijeron las palabras de Balaq.
8 He answered: Tarry here this night, and I will answer whatsoever the Lord shall say to me. And while they stayed with Balaam, God came and said to him:	8 El les contestó: «Pasad aquí la noche y os responderé según lo que me diga Yahveh.» Los jefes de Moab se quedaron en casa de Balaam.
9 What mean these men that are with thee?	9 Entró Yahveh donde Balaam y le dijo: «¿Qué hombres son ésos que están en tu casa?»
10 He answered: Balac the son of Sephor king of the Moabites hath sent to me,	10 Le respondió Balaam a Dios: «Balaq, hijo de Sippor, rey de Moab, me ha enviado a decir:
11 Saying: Behold a people that is come out of Egypt, hath covered the face of the land: come and curse them, if by any means I may fight with them and drive them away.	11 El pueblo que ha salido de Egipto ha cubierto la superficie de la tierra. Ven, pues, maldícemelo, a ver si puedo vencerlo y expulsarlo.»
12 And God said to Balaam : Thou shalt not go with them, nor shalt thou curse the people: because it is blessed.	12 Pero dijo Dios a Balaam: «No vayas con ellos, no maldigas a ese pueblo porque es bendito.»
13 And he rose in the morning and said to the princes: Go into your country, because the Lord hath forbid me to come with you.	13 Se levantó Balaam de madrugada y dijo a los jefes de Balaq: «Id a vuestra tierra, porque Yahveh no quiere dejarme ir con vosotros.»
14 The princes returning, said to Balac: Balaam would not come with us.	14 Se levantaron, pues, los jefes de Moab, volvieron donde Balaq y le dijeron: «Balaam se ha negado a venir con nosotros.»
15 Then he sent many more and more noble than he had sent before:	15 Balaq envió otra vez jefes en mayor número y más ilustres que los anteriores.
16 Who, when they were come to Balaam, said: Thus saith Balac the son of Sephor, Delay not to come to me:	16 Fueron donde Balaam y le dijeron: «Así dice Balaq, hijo de Sippor: No rehúses, por favor, venir a mí,
17 For I am ready to honour thee, and will give thee whatsoever thou wilt: come and curse this people.	17 que te recompensaré con grandes honores y haré todo lo que me digas. Ven, por favor, y maldíceme a ese pueblo.»
18 Balaam answered: If Balac would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot alter the word of the Lord my God, to speak either more or less.	18 Respondió Balaam a los siervos de Balaq: «Aunque me diera Balaq su casa llena de plata y oro, no podría traspasar la orden de Yahveh mi Dios en nada, ni poco ni mucho.
19 I pray you to stay here this night also, that I may know what the Lord will answer me once more.	19 Quedaos aquí también vosotros esta noche y averiguaré qué más me dice Yahveh.»
20 God therefore came to Balaam in the night, and said to him: It these men be come to call thee, arise and go with them: yet so, that thou do what I shall command thee.	20 Entró Dios donde Balaam por la noche y le dijo: «¿No han venido esos hombres a llamarte? Levántate y vete con ellos. Pero has de cumplir la palabra que yo te diga.»
21 Balaam arose in the morning, and saddling his ass went with them.	21 Se levantó Balaam de madrugada, aparejó su asna y se fue con los jefes de Moab.
22 And God was angry. And an angel of the Lord stood in the way against Balaam, who sat on the ass, and had two servants with him.	22 Cuando iba, se encendió la ira de Yahveh y el Ángel de Yahveh se puso en el camino para estorbarle. El montaba la burra y sus dos muchachos iban con él.
23 The ass seeing the angel standing in the way, with a drawn sword, turned herself out of the way, and went into the field. And when Balaam beat her, and had a mind to bring her again to the way,	23 La burra vio al Ángel de Yahveh plantado en el camino, la espada desenvainada en la mano. La burra se apartó del camino y se fue a campo traviesa. Balaam pegó a la burra para hacerla volver al camino.
24 The angel stood in a narrow place between two walls, wherewith the vineyards were enclosed.	24 Pero el Ángel de Yahveh se puso en un sendero entre las viñas, con una pared a un lado y otra a otro.
25 And the ass seeing him, thrust herself close to the wall, and bruised the foot of the rider. But he beat her again:	25 Al ver la burra al Ángel de Yahveh, se arrimó a la pared y raspó el pie de Balaam contra la pared. El le pegó otra vez.
26 And nevertheless the angel going on to a narrow place, where there was no way to turn aside either to the right hand or to the left, stood to meet him.	26 Volvió el Ángel de Yahveh a cambiar de sitio, y se puso en un paso estrecho, donde no había espacio para apartarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.
27 And when the ass saw the angel standing, she fell under the feet of the rider: who being angry beat her sides more vehemently with a staff.	27 Vio la burra al Ángel de Yahveh y se echó con Balaam encima. Balaam se enfureció y pegó a la burra con un palo.
28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said: What have I done to thee? Why strikest thou me, lo, now this third time?	28 Entonces Yahveh abrió la boca de la burra, que dijo a Balaam: «¿qué te he hecho yo para que me pegues con ésta ya tres veces?»
29 Balaam answered: Because thou hast deserved it, and hast served me ill: I would I had a sword that I might kill thee.	29 Respondió Balaam a la burra: «Porque te has burlado de mí. Ojalá tuviera una espada en la mano; ahora mismo te mataba.»
30 The ass said: Am not I thy beast, on which thou hast been always accustomed to ride until this present day? tell me if I ever did the like thing to thee. But he said: Never.	30 Respondió la burra a Balaam: «¿No soy yo tu burra, y me has montado desde siempre hasta el día de hoy? ¿Acaso acostumbro a portarme así contigo?» Respondió él: «No.»
31 Forthwith the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel standing in the way with a drawn sword, and he worshipped him falling flat on the ground.	31 Entonces abrió Yahveh los ojos de Balaam, que vio al Ángel de Yahveh, de pie en el camino, la espada desenvainada en la mano; y se inclinó y postró rostro en tierra.
32 And the angel said to him: Why beatest thou thy ass these three times? I am come to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse, and contrary to me:	32 El Ángel de Yahveh le dijo; «¿Por qué has pegado a tu burra con ésta ya tres veces? He sido yo el que he salido a cerrarte el paso, porque delante de mí se tuerce el camino.
33 And unless the ass had turned out of the way, giving place to me who stood against thee, I had slain thee, and she should have lived.	33 La burra me ha visto y se ha apartado de mí tres veces. Gracias a que se ha desviado, porque si no, para ahora te habría matado y a ella la habría dejado con vida.»
34 Balaam said: I have sinned, not knowing that thou didst stand against me: and now if it displease thee that I go, I will return.	34 Dijo entonces Balaam al Ángel de Yahveh: «He pecado, pues no sabía que tú te habías puesto en mi camino. Pero ahora mismo, si esto te parece mal, me vuelvo.»
35 The angel said: Go with these men, and see thou speak no other thing than what I shall command thee. He went therefore with the princes.	35 Respondió el Ángel de Yahveh a Balaam: «Vete con esos hombres, pero no dirás nada más que lo que yo te diga.» Balaam marchó con los jefes de Balaq.
36 And when Balac heard it he came forth to meet him in a town of the Moabites, that is situate in the uttermost borders of Arnon.	36 Oyó Balaq que llegaba Balaam y salió a su encuentro hacia Ar Moab, en la frontera del Arnón, en los confines del territorio.
37 And he said to Balaam: I sent messengers to call thee, why didst thou not come immediately to me? was it because I am not able to reward thy coming?	37 Dijo Balaq a Balaam: «¿No te mandé llamar? ¿Por qué no viniste donde mí? ¿Es que no puedo recompensarte?»
38 He answered him: Lo, here I am: shall I have power to speak any other thing but that which God shall put in my mouth?	38 Respondió Balaam a Balaq: «Mira que ahora ya he venido donde ti. A ver si puedo decir algo. La palabra que ponga Dios en mi boca es la que diré.»
39 So they went on together, and came into a city, that was in the uttermost borders of his kingdom.	39 Marchó Balaam con Balaq y llegaron a Quiryat Jusot.
40 And when Balac had killed oxen and sheep, he sent presents to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.	40 Sacrificó Balaq una vaca y una oveja y le envió porciones a Balaam y a los jefes que le acompañaban.
41 And when morning was come, he brought him to the high places of Baal, and he beheld the uttermost part of the people.	41 A la mañana, tomó Balaq a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot Baal, desde donde se veía un extremo del campamento.
