Moreover take thou up a lamentation for the princes of Israel,1 Y tú entona una elegía sobre los príncipes de Israel.
And say: Why did thy mother the lioness lie down among the lions, and bring up her whelps in the midst of young lions?2 Dirás: ¿Qué era tu madre? Una leona entre leones. Echada entre los leoncillos, criaba a sus cachorros.
And she brought out one of her whelps, and he became a lion: and he learned to catch the prey, and to devour men.3 Exaltó a uno de sus cachorros, que se hizo un león joven; y aprendió a desgarrar su presa, devoró hombres.
And the nations heard of him, and took him, but not without receiving wounds: and they brought him in chains into the land of Egypt.4 Oyeron hablar de él las naciones, en su fosa quedó preso; con garfios le llevaron al país de Egipto.
But she seeing herself weakened, and that her hope was lost, took one of her young lions, and set him up for a lion.5 Vio ella que su espera era fallida, fallida su esperanza; y tomo otro de sus cachorros, le hizo un león joven.
And he went up and down among the lions, and became a lion: and he learned to catch the prey, and to devour men.6 Andaba éste entre los leones, se hizo un león joven, aprendió a desgarrar su presa, devoró hombres;
He learned to make widows, and to lay waste their cities: and the land became desolate, and the fulness thereof by the noise of his roaring.7 derribó sus palacios, devastó sus ciudades; la tierra y sus habitantes estaban aterrados por la voz de su rugido.
And the nations Game together against him on every side out of the provinces, and they spread their net over him, in their wounds he was taken.8 Se alzaron contra él las naciones, las provincias circundantes; tendieron sobre él su red y en su fosa quedó preso.
And they put him into a cage, they brought him in chains to the king of Babylon: and they cast him into prison, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.9 Con garfios le cerraron en jaula, le llevaron al rey de Babilonia en calabozos le metieron, para que no se oyese más su voz por los montes de Israel.
Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood planted by the water: her fruit and her branches have grown out of many waters.10 Tu madre se parecía a una vid plantada a orillas de las aguas. Era fecunda, exuberante, por la abundancia de agua.
And she hath strong rods to make sceptres for them that bear rule, and her stature was exalted among the branches: and she saw her height in the multitude of her branches.11 Tenía ramas fuertes para ser cetros reales; su talla se elevó hasta dentro de las nubes. Era imponente por su altura, por su abundancia de ramaje.
But she was plucked up in wrath, and cast on the ground, and the burning wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods are withered, and dried up: the fire hath devoured her.12 Pero ha sido arrancada con furor, tirada por tierra; el viento del este ha agostado su fruto; ha sido rota, su rama fuerte se ha secado, la ha devorado el fuego.
And now she is transplanted into the desert, in a land not passable, and dry.13 Y ahora está plantada en el desierto, en tierra de sequía y de sed.
And a fire is gone out from a rod of her branches, which hath devoured her fruit: so that she now hath no strong rod, to be a sceptre of rulers. This is a lamentation, and it shall be for a lamentation.14 Ha salido fuego de su rama, ha devorado sus sarmientos y su fruto. No volverá a tener su rama fuerte, su cetro real. Esto es una elegía; y de elegía sirvió.
