The hopes of a man that is void of understanding are vain and deceitful: and dreams lift up fools.1 Les espérances vaines et trompeuses sont pour l'insensé et les songes donnent des ailes auxsots.
The man that giveth heed to lying visions, is like to him that catcheth at a shadow, and followeth after the wind.2 C'est saisir une ombre et poursuivre le vent que de s'arrêter à des songes.
The vision of dreams is the resemblance of one thing to another: as when a man's likeness is before the face of a man.3 Miroir et songes sont choses semblables: en face d'un visage paraît son image.
What can be made clean by the unclean? and what truth can come from that which is false?4 De l'impur que peut-on tirer de pur? Du mensonge que peut-on tirer de vrai?
Deceitful divinations and lying omens and the dreams of evildoers, are vanity:5 Divination, augures, songes, autant de vanités, ce sont là rêveries de femme enceinte.
And the heart fancieth as that of a woman in travail: except it be a vision sent forth from the most High, set no thy heart upon them.6 A moins qu'ils ne soient envoyés en visiteurs du Très-Haut, n'y applique pas ton coeur.
For dreams have deceived many, and they have failed that put their trust in them.7 Les songes ont égaré beaucoup de gens, ceux qui comptaient dessus ont échoué.
The word of the law shall be fulfilled without a lie, and wisdom shall be made plain in the mouth of the faithful.8 C'est sans mensonge que s'accomplit la Loi et la sagesse est parfaite dans la sincérité.
What doth he know, that hath not been tried? A man that hath much experience, shall think of many things: and he that hath learned many things, shall shew forth understanding.9 On a beaucoup appris quand on a beaucoup voyagé et un homme d'expérience parle avecintelligence.
He that hath no experience, knoweth little: and he that hath been experienced in many things, multiplieth prudence.10 Celui qui n'a pas été à l'épreuve connaît peu de choses, mais celui qui a voyagé déborde desavoir-faire.
He that hath not been tried, what manner of things doth he know? he that hath been surprised, shall abound with subtlety.11 J'ai beaucoup vu au cours de mes voyages et j'en ai compris plus que je ne saurais dire.
I have seen many things by travelling, and many customs of things.12 Bien des fois j'ai été en danger de mort, et j'ai été sauvé, voici de quelle manière:
Sometimes I have been in danger of death for these things, and I have been delivered by the grace of God.13 Ceux qui craignent le Seigneur, leur esprit vivra, car leur espérance s'appuie sur qui peutles sauver.
The spirit of those that fear God; is sought after, and by his regard shall be blessed.14 Celui qui craint le Seigneur n'a peur de rien, il ne tremble pas, car Dieu est son espérance.
For their hope is on him that saveth them, and the eyes of God are upon them that love him.15 Heureuse l'âme de qui craint le Seigneur: sur qui s'appuie-t-il et qui est son soutien?
He that feareth the Lord shall tremble at nothing, and shall not be afraid for he is his hope.16 Les regards du Seigneur sont fixés sur ceux qui l'aiment, puissante protection, soutien pleinde force, abri contre le vent du désert, ombrage contre l'ardeur du midi, protection contre les obstacles, assurancecontre les chutes.
The soul of him that feareth the Lord is blessed.17 Il élève l'âme, il illumine les yeux, il donne santé, vie et bénédiction.
To whom doth he look, and who in his strength?18 Sacrifier un bien mal acquis, c'est se moquer, les dons des méchants ne sont pas agréables.
The eyes of the Lord are upon them that fear him, he is their powerful protector, and strong stay, a defence from the heat, and a cover from the sun at noon,19 Le Très-Haut n'agrée pas les offrandes des impies, ce n'est pas pour l'abondance desvictimes qu'il pardonne les péchés.
A preservation from stumbling, and a help from falling; he raiseth up the soul, and enlighteneth the eyes, and giveth health, and life, and blessing.20 C'est immoler le fils en présence de son père que d'offrir un sacrifice avec les biens despauvres.
The offering of him that sacrificeth of a thing wrongfully gotten, is stained, and the mockeries of the unjust are not acceptable.21 Une maigre nourriture, c'est la vie des pauvres, les en priver, c'est commettre un meurtre.
The Lord is only for them that wait upon him in the way of truth and justice.22 C'est tuer son prochain que de lui ôter la subsistance, c'est répandre le sang que de priver lesalarié de son dû.
The most High approveth not the gifts of the wicked: neither hath he respect to the oblations of the unjust, nor will he be pacified for sine by the multitude of their sacrifices.23 L'un bâtit, l'autre démolit; qu'en retirent-ils sinon de la peine?
He that offereth sacrifice of the goods of the poor, is as one that sacrificeth the son in the presence of his father.24 L'un bénit, l'autre maudit: de qui le Maître écoutera-t-il la voix?
The bread of the needy, is the life of the poor: he that defraudeth them thereof, is a man of blood.25 Qui se purifie du contact d'un mort et de nouveau le touche, que lui sert son ablution?
He that taketh away the bread gotten by sweat, is like him that killeth his neighbour.26 Ainsi l'homme qui jeûne pour ses péchés, puis s'en va et les commet encore; qui exaucerasa prière? Que lui sert de s'humilier?
He that sheddeth blood, and he that defraudeth the labourer of his hire, are brothers.
When one buildeth up, and another pulleth down: what profit have they but the labour?
When one prayeth, and another curseth: whose voice will God hear?
He that washeth himself after touching the dead, if he toucheth him again, what doth his washing avail?
So a man that fasteth for his sins, and doth the same again, what doth his humbling himself profit him? who will hear his prayer?
