1 God of my fathers, and Lord of mercy, who hast made all things with thy word,	1 Dieu de nos Pères, Seigneur de miséricorde, par ta Parole tu as fait toutes choses,
2 And by thy wisdom hast appointed man, that he should have dominion over the creature that was made by thee,	2 et par ta Sagesse tu as formé l’homme pour qu’il domine sur toutes les créatures au-dessous de toi,
3 That he should order the world according to equity and justice, and execute justice with an upright heart:	3 pour qu’il gouverne le monde avec sainteté et justice, et prenne ses décisions avec droite conscience:
4 Give me wisdom, that sitteth by thy throne, and cast me not off from among thy children:	4 donne-moi donc la Sagesse qui partage ton trône, et ne me rejette pas du nombre de tes enfants.
5 For I am thy servant, and the son of thy handmaid, a weak man, and of short time, and falling short of the understanding of judgment and laws.	5 Vois, je suis ton serviteur, le fils de ta servante, un homme faible dont la vie est brève, trop limité pour comprendre la justice et les lois!
6 For if one be perfect among the children of men, yet if thy wisdom be not with him, he shall be nothing regarded.	6 Même le plus parfait parmi les humains ne serait rien, sans la Sagesse qui vient de toi.
7 Thou hast chosen me to be king of thy people, and a judge of thy sons and daughters.	7 Tu m’as choisi comme roi de ton peuple, comme juge pour tes fils et tes filles.
8 And hast commanded me to build a temple on thy holy mount, and an altar in the city of thy dwelling place, a resemblance of thy holy tabernacle, which thou hast prepared from the beginning:	8 Tu m’as dit de bâtir un temple sur ta sainte montagne, un autel dans la ville où tu habites, à la ressemblance de cette Tente céleste que tu avais préparée pour toi dès le commencement.
9 And thy wisdom with thee, which knoweth thy works, which then also was present when thou madest the world, and knew what was agreeable to thy eyes, and what was right in thy commandments.	9 Auprès de toi est cette Sagesse qui connaît toutes tes œuvres, qui était là lorsque tu faisais le monde, qui sait ce qui t’est agréable et s’accorde avec tes commandements.
10 Send her out of thy holy heaven, and from the throne of thy majesty, that she may be with me, and may labour with me, that I may know what is acceptable with thee:	10 Fais qu’elle descende depuis le ciel où tout est saint, envoie-la de ton trône glorieux, pour qu’elle soit à mes côtés dans mes travaux et que je sache ce qui te plaît.
11 For she knoweth and understandeth all things, and shall lead me soberly in my works, and shall preserve me by her power.	11 Car elle connaît et comprend tout; elle me guidera d’une main avisée dans mes entreprises, et sa majesté me protégera.
12 So shall my works be acceptable, and I shall govern thy people justly, and shall be worthy of the throne of my father.	12 Alors mes œuvres te seront agréables, je gouvernerai ton peuple avec justice, et je serai digne du trône de mon père.
13 For who among men is he that can know the counsel of God? or who can think what the will of God is?	13 Qui donc, en effet, connaîtra le vouloir de Dieu? Qui se passionnera pour ce que veut le Seigneur?
14 For the thoughts of mortal men are fearful, and our counsels uncertain.	14 La raison humaine avance timidement, nos réflexions sont mal assurées,
15 For the corruptible body is a load upon the soul, and the earthly habitation presseth down the mind that museth upon many things.	15 car un corps périssable pèse lourdement sur l’âme, et notre gangue d’argile paralyse l’esprit toujours en éveil.
16 And hardly do we guess aright at things that are upon earth: and with labour do we find the things that are before us. But the things that are in heaven, who shall search out?	16 S’il nous coûte de connaître les choses terrestres, de découvrir ce qui est à portée de main, qui pourrait comprendre ce qui est dans les cieux?
17 And who shall know thy thought, except thou give wisdom, and send thy Holy Spirit from above:	17 Et qui connaîtrait tes intentions, si tu ne lui avais pas d’abord donné la Sagesse, si tu ne lui avais pas envoyé d’en haut ton Esprit saint?
18 And so the ways of them that are upon earth may be corrected, and men may learn the things that please thee?	18 C’est ainsi que les habitants de la terre ont pu corriger leur conduite; ayant appris ce qui te plaît, ils ont été sauvés par la Sagesse.
19 For by wisdom they were healed, whosoever have pleased thee, O Lord, from the beginning.
