1 But thy saints had a very great light, and they heard their voice indeed, but did not see their shape. And because they also did not suffer the same things, they glorified thee:	1 Per i tuoi santi, invece, c'era una grandissima luce: gli Egiziani, udendo la loro voce senza vederne la persona, li proclamavano beati, perché non soffrivano quelle pene;
2 And they that before had been wronged, gave thanks, because they were not hurt now: and asked this gift, that there might be a difference.	2 e rendevano grazie perché, pur offesi per primi, non infierivano, e chiedevano grazia delle passate ostilità.
3 Therefore they received a burning pillar of fire for a guide of the way which they knew not, and thou gavest them a harmless sun of a good entertainment.	3 Invece di quelle cose, desti loro una colonna fiammeggiante, come guida nell'ignoto cammino, e come sole innocuo nel magnifico pellegrinaggio.
4 The others indeed were worthy to be deprived of light, and imprisoned in darkness, who kept thy children shut up, by whom the pure light of the law was to be given to the world.	4 Veramente quelli meritavano di essere privati della luce e di essere prigionieri delle tenebre, essi che avevano custodito chiusi i tuoi figli, per mezzo dei quali stavi per dare al mondo l'incorruttibile luce della legge.
5 And whereas they thought to kill the babes of the just, one child being cast forth, and saved, to reprove them, thou tookest away a multitude of their children, and destroyedst them all together in a mighty water.	5 Poiché essi avevano deliberato di uccidere i figli dei santi e poiché un solo figlio è stato esposto e salvato, per castigo togliesti la moltitudine dei loro figli e insieme li facesti perire nell'acqua impetuosa.
6 For that night was known before by our fathers, that assuredly knowing what oaths they had trusted to, they might be of better courage.	6 Quella notte fu conosciuta in anticipo dai nostri padri perché, sapendo con certezza a quali giuramenti avevano creduto, stessero di buon animo.
7 So thy people received the salvation of the just, and destruction of the unjust.	7 Fu attesa dal tuo popolo la salvezza dei giusti e la rovina dei nemici.
8 For as thou didst punish the adversaries: so thou didst also encourage and glorify us.	8 Perché come punisti gli avversari, così glorificasti noi, chiamandoci a te.
9 For the just children of good men were offering sacrifice secretly, and they unanimously ordered a law of justice: that the just should receive both good and evil alike, singing now the praises of the fathers.	9 I santi figli dei buoni di nascosto offrivano il sacrificio e di comune accordo s'imposero la legge divina: che i santi sarebbero diventati ugualmente partecipi dei loro beni e pericoli, cantando prima le lodi dei padri.
10 But on the other side there sounded an ill according cry of the enemies, and a lamentable mourning was heard for the children that were bewailed.	10 Faceva eco il grido discorde dei nemici e si diffondeva il lamento di quanti piangevano i figli.
11 And the servant suffered the same punishment as the master, and a common man suffered in like manner as the king.	11 Con lo stesso giudizio era colpito insieme il servo con il padrone e l'uomo del popolo soffriva le stesse cose del re.
12 So all alike had innumerable dead, with one kind of death. Neither were the living sufficient to bury them; for in one moment the noblest offspring of them was destroyed.	12 Tutti ugualmente, in un solo genere di morte, avevano innumerevoli morti; i vivi infatti non erano sufficienti per seppellire perché in un istante la loro generazione più nobile fu distrutta.
13 For whereas they would not believe any thing before by reason of the enchantments, then first upon the destruction of the firstborn, they acknowledged the people to be of God.	13 Quanti erano rimasti increduli a tutto per la magia, alla morte dei primogeniti confessarono che il popolo è figlio di Dio.
14 For while all things were in quiet silence, and the night was in the midst of her course,	14 Mentre un quieto silenzio avvolgeva tutte le cose e la notte era a metà del suo corso,
15 Thy almighty word leapt down from heaven from thy royal throne, as a fierce conqueror into the midst of the land of destruction.	15 la tua parola onnipotente dal cielo, dai troni regali, come inflessibile guerriero si slanciò in mezzo alla terra votata alla morte,
16 With a sharp sword carrying thy unfeigned commandment, and he stood and filled all things with death, and standing on the earth reached even to heaven.	16 portando, come spada acuta, l'irrevocabile tuo decreto. Fermatasi, riempì l'universo di morte; toccava il cielo e camminava sulla terra.
17 Then suddenly visions of evil dreams troubled them, and fears unlooked for came upon them.	17 Allora li sconvolsero improvvise apparizioni di terribili sogni, sopraggiunsero timori inaspettati
18 And one thrown here, another there, half dead, shewed the cause of his death.	18 e, gettati semimorti chi qua e chi là, manifestavano la causa per cui morivano:
19 For the visions that troubled them foreshewed these things, lest they should perish and not know why they suffered these evils.	19 i sogni terrificanti di questo li preavvisarono, perché non perissero ignorando la ragione per cui soffrivano malamente.
20 But the just also were afterwards touched by an assault of death, and there was a disturbance of the multitude in the wilderness: but thy wrath did not long continue.	20 La prova della morte raggiunse anche i giusti e nel deserto ci fu una strage di molti, ma l'ira divina non durò a lungo:
21 For a blameless man made haste to pray for the people, bringing forth the shield of his ministry, prayer, and by incense making supplication, withstood the wrath, and put an end to the calamity, shewing that he was thy servant.	21 perché un uomo irreprensibile s'affrettò a combattere; portando le armi del suo ministero, preghiera e incenso espiatorio, si oppose alla collera divina e mise fine alla calamità, mostrando di essere tuo servo.
22 And he overcame the disturbance, not by strength of body nor with force of arms, but with a word he subdued him that punished them, alleging the oaths and covenant made with the fathers.	22 Egli vinse la collera divina non con la forza del corpo, né con l'attività delle armi, ma con la parola sottomise colui che prova, ricordandogli i giuramenti fatti ai padri e l'alleanza.
23 For when they were now fallen down dead by heaps one upon another, he stood between and stayed the assault, and cut off the way to the living.	23 Già i morti si ammassavano gli uni sugli altri, quando egli, stando in mezzo, arrestò l'ira e le tagliò la strada verso i viventi.
24 For in the priestly robe which he wore, was the whole world: and in the four rows of the stones the glory of the fathers was graven, and thy majesty was written upon the diadem of his head.	24 Sulla sua lunga tunica vi era tutto il mondo, nell'intaglio dei quattro ordini di pietre le glorie dei padri e sul diadema del suo capo la tua maestà.
25 And to these the destroyer gave place, and was afraid of them: for the proof only of wrath was enough.	25 Dinanzi a queste cose lo sterminatore indietreggiò e ne ebbe timore, poiché era sufficiente una sola dimostrazione dell'ira divina.
