1 I turned myself to other things, and I saw the oppressions that are done under the sun, and the tears of the innocent, and they had no comforter; and they were not able to resist their violence, being destitute of help from any.	1 Volsimi dall' altro lato, e vidi gl' inganni (e le forze) che sono fatte sotto il sole, e le lacrime de' meno possenti, e nessuno è adiutatore; e non pare che si possa contrastare a quelle forze, però ch' io li vidi destituiti di ogni adiutorio.
2 And I praised the dead rather than the living:	2 E però lodai più li morti, che li vivi; (però che nessuno scampa delle loro forze).
3 And I judged him happier than them both, that is not yet born, nor hath seen the evils that are done under the sun.	3 Già più è bene avventurato di nessuno di costoro, quello che non è nato ancora; però che non vide il male che si fa sotto il sole.
4 Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighhour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.	4 E anche sì mi avvidi. (dall' altro lato), come gli uomini s' affaticano, (e ciascuno s' ingegna quanto sae), e vidi che l'uno ha invidia dell' altro; e anche in questo ha grande vanitade per soperchio rigoglio.
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh, saying:	5 E lo stolto (sì si strugge e) stropicciasi le mani, e mangiasi le carni sue, dicendo:
6 Better is a handful with rest, than both hands full with labour, and vexation of mind.	6 egli è meglio uno pugnellino con riposo (e sanza fatica), che avere amendue piene le mani con fatica e con afflizione dell' animo.
7 Considering I found also another vanity under the sun:	7 Anche pensai (e volsimi dall' altro lato), e vidi un' altra vanità sotto il sole,
8 There is but one, and he hath not a second, no child, no brother, and yet he ceaseth not to labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches, neither doth he reflect, saying: For whom do I labour, and defraud my soul of good things? in this also is vanity, and a grievous vexation.	8 cioè che sarà l'uomo solo, sanza figliuolo e sanza fratelli, e si non si riposa mai, (e tutto il dì fulmina per guadagnare), e gli occhi suoi non si saziano di ricchezze; e non pensa mai, dicendo: doh, per che faccio io questo, e a cui raduno, e inganno l'anima mia con questi beni miei? e però sì è questo grande vanitade e affliggimento pessimo (e pericoloso).
9 It is better therefore that two should be together, than one: for they have the advantage of their society:	9 Meglio è ad essere duo insieme, che uno; però che hanno utilitade (insieme) in compagnia.
10 If one fall he shall be supported by the other: woe to him that is alone, for when he falleth, he hath none to lift him up.	10 Onde quando l'uomo si sconsola, il compagno si lo sostiene; e guai a chi è solo! imperò che s' elli cade, non ha chi l'aiuti rizzare.
11 And if two lie together, they shall warm one another: how shall one alone be warmed?	11 E se i due dormiranno insieme, (si nutricherae l'uno l'altro, e) riscalderannosi insieme; or come si puote riscaldare (e confortare) uno solo?
12 And if a man prevail against one, two shall withstand him: a threefold cord is not easily broken.	12 Ma se averà compagnia, se alcuno gli verrà adosso, aiuterannosi insieme, e vinceranno colui; onde la fune di tre fila malagevolmente si rompe.
13 Better is a child that is poor and wise, than a king that is old and foolish, who knoweth not to foresee for hereafter.	13 Meglio è l'uomo povero e giovane e savio, che none il re vecchio e pazzo, il quale non sa provedersi dinanzi.
14 Because out of prison and chains sometimes a man cometh forth to a kingdom: and another born king is consumed with poverty.	14 Come alcuna volta avviene che l' uomo nato da legittimo reame, e poi che è re, consumasi (e distruggesi); e colui che era in prigione (in catene di povertade, per suo sapere) diventa poi re.
15 I saw all men living, that walk under the sun with the second young man, who shall rise up in his place.	15 Io vidi molta gente sotto il sole andare con quello secondo, cioè col povero savio e giovane, il quale entroe nel reame dell' altro.
16 The number of the people, of all that were before him is infinite: and they that shall come afterwards, shall not rejoice in him: but this also is vanity, and vexation of spirit.	16 E sanza numero furono coloro del popolo, li quali furono sotto il vecchio inanzi lui; ma chi verrà di poi a stare col giovane, non si rallegrerà del primo. Anche questo sì è vanitade e affliggimento d'animo.
17 Keep thy foot, when thou goest into the house of God, and draw nigh to hear. For much better is obedience, than the victims of fools, who know not what evil they do.	17 Quando tu entri in chiesa, non vi andare frettamente, ma pònti mente a' piedi, e appròssimati d'udire (la parola di Dio e ubbidiscila); però che meglio è ubbidire, che none sacrificio delli stolti, i quali non sanno quello che facciono di male.
