1 But Simon, of whom we spoke before, and of his country, spoke ill of Onias, as though he had incited Heliodorus to do these things, and had been the promoter of evils:	1 Wspomniany już Szymon, który był zdrajcą skarbów i ojczyzny, oskarżył Oniasza, jakoby on działał przeciwko Heliodorowi i był sprawcą tych nieszczęść.
2 And he presumed to call him a traitor to the kingdom, who provided for the city, and defended his nation, and wed zealous for the law of God.	2 Dobroczyńcę miasta oraz tego, który wspomagał swych rodaków i gorliwie zachowywał Prawo, odważył się nazwać wrogiem ładu w państwie.
3 But when the enmities proceeded so far, that murders also were committed by some of Simon's friends:	3 Nienawiść doszła do tego stopnia, że jeden ze zwolenników Szymona zaczął dopuszczać się zabójstw.
4 Onias considering the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, who was the governor of Celesyria and Phenicia, was outrageous, which increased the malice of Simon, went to the king,	4 Oniasz zaś widząc jak trudne byłoby współzawodnictwo i że Apoloniusz, syn Menesteusa, wódz wojsk Celesyrii i Fenicji, podnieca złość Szymona,
5 Not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but with a view to the common good of all the people.	5 udał się do króla nie po to, aby być oskrażycielem rodaków, ale mając na uwadze dobro ogólne, a zwłaszcza całego narodu.
6 For he saw that, except the king took care, it was impossible that matters should be settled in peace, or that Simon would cease from his folly.	6 Wiedział bowiem, że bez zarządzenia królewskiego nie będzie możliwe osiągnięcie pokoju publicznego i że Szymon nie zaprzestanie swego szaleństwa.
7 But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, who was called the Illustrious, had taken possession of the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias ambitiously sought the high priesthood:	7 Kiedy Seleukos zakończył życie, a władzę objął Antioch mający przydomek Epifanes, w niegodziwy sposób dostał się na arcykapłańskie stanowisko Jazon, brat Oniasza.
8 And went to the king, promising him three hundred and sixty talents of silver, and out of other revenues fourscore talents.	8 W czasie spotkania obiecywał on królowi trzysta sześćdziesiąt talentów w srebrze, a ponadto z innych jakichś dochodów osiemdziesiąt talentów.
9 Besides this he promised also a hundred and fifty more, if he might have license to set him up a place for exercise, and a place for youth, and to entitle them, that were at Jerusalem, Antiochians.	9 Ponadto jeszcze zobowiązał się do wypłacenia innych stu pięćdziesięciu, jeżeli mu będzie dozwolone urządzić własnym kosztem gimnazjum i efebion, a mieszkańców Jerozolimy zapisać jako Antiocheńczyków.
10 Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten the rule into his hands, forthwith he began to bring over his countrymen to the fashion of the heathens.	10 Król zgodził się, a kiedy on objął władzę, zaraz zaczął narzucać swym rodakom grecki sposób życia.
11 And abolishing those things, which had been decreed of special favour by the kings in behalf of the Jews, by the means of John the father of that Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome to make amity and alliance, he disannulled the lawful ordinances of the citizens, and brought in fashions that were perverse.	11 Zniósł humanitarne przywileje królewskie, z jakich korzystali Żydzi dzięki staraniom Jana, ojca Eupolemosa, tego, który udał się w poselstwie, aby z Rzymianami zawrzeć traktat przyjaźni i wzajemnej obrony. 12 For he had the boldness to set up, U under the very castle, a place of exercise, and to put all the choicest youths in brothel houses.	12 Umyślnie bowiem pod samym zamkiem wybudował gimnazjum i najlepszych młodzieńców zachęcił do włożenia kapelusza.
13 Now this was not the beginning, but an increase, and progress of heathenish and foreign manners, through the abominable and unheard of wickedness of Jason, that impious wretch and no priest.	13 Nastąpiło tak wielkie rozkrzewienie hellenizmu i taka moda na obce obyczaje, pod wpływem niezwykłej nikczemności bezbożnika, nie-arcykapłana Jazona,
14 Insomuch that the priests were not now occupied about the offices of the altar, but despising the temple and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the games, and of the unlawful allowance thereof, and of the exercise of the discus.	14 że kapłani nie okazywali już żadnej gorliwości w służbie ołtarza, ale gardząc świątynią i zaniedbując ofiary, zaraz na sygnał [do rzucania] dyskiem spieszyli się, aby wziąć udział w niezgodnych z Prawem ćwiczeniach palestry.
15 And setting nought by the honours of their fathers, they esteemed the Grecian glories for the best:	15 Za nic sobie mając zaszczyty ojczyste, za najpiękniejsze uważali greckie odznaczenia.
16 For the sake of which they incurred a dangerous contention, and followed earnestly their ordinances, and in all things they coveted to be like them, who were their enemies and murderers.	16 Oto dlaczego znaleźli się w trudnym położeniu: w tych [bowiem], których życie chcieli naśladować i do których chcieli się upodobnić, znaleźli wrogów i ciemiężycieli.
17 For acting wickedly against the laws of God doth not pass unpunished: but this the time following will declare.	17 Występowanie bowiem przeciwko Bożym prawom nie ujdzie bezkarnie, ale to się okaże w chwili, która nastanie.
18 Now when the game that was used every fifth year was kept at Tyre, the king being present,	18 Gdy w Tyrze wobec króla obchodzono co pięć lat urządzane igrzyska,
19 The wicked Jason sent from Jerusalem sinful men to carry three hundred didrachmas of silver for the sacrifice of Hercules; but the bearers thereof desired it might not be bestowed on the sacrifices, because it was not necessary, but might be deputed for other charges.	19 bezecny Jazon wysłał jako widzów rzekomych przedstawicieli Jerozolimy, będących Antiocheńczykami. Zabrali oni ze sobą trzysta drachm w srebrze na ofiarę dla [boga] Heraklesa. Sami jednak ci, którzy je zabrali, uważali, że nie można i nie wypada ich złożyć na ofiarę, ale że trzeba je oddać na inny cel.
20 So the money was appointed by him that sent it to the sacrifice of Hercules: but because of them that carried it was employed for the making of galleys.	20 Tak więc to, co wysyłający przeznaczyli na ofiarę dla Heraklesa, dzięki przewożącym poszło na budowę trójrzędowców.
21 Now when Apollonius the son of Mnestheus was sent into Egypt to treat with the nobles of king Philometor, and Antiochus understood that he was wholly excluded from the affairs of the kingdom, consulting his own interest, he departed thence and came to Joppe, and from thence to Jerusalem:	21 Gdy Apoloniusz, syn Menesteusa, został posłany do Egiptu na uroczystość wstąpienia na tron króla Filometora, Antioch dowiedział się, że ten [król] stał się wrogiem jego panowania, zatroszczył się więc o własne bezpieczeństwo. Dlatego też znalazłszy się w Jafie, udał się do Jerozolimy,
22 Where he was received in a, magnificent manner by Jason, and the city, and came in with torch lights, and with praises, end from thence he returned with his army into Phenicia.	22 gdzie bardzo uroczyście został przyjęty przez Jazona i miasto, przy świetle pochodni i wśród okrzyków. Później podobnie [uroczyście] razem z wojskiem udał się do Fenicji.
23 Three years afterwards Jason sent Menelaus, brother of the aforesaid Simon, to carry money to the king, and to bring answers from him concerning certain necessary affairs.	23 Po upływie trzech lat Jazon posłał do Menelaosa, brata wyżej wspomnianego Szymona, aby odwiózł pieniądze dla króla i doprowadził do końca podjęte już pilne sprawy.
24 But he being recommended to the king, when he had magnified the appearance of his power, got the high priesthood for himself, by offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver.	24 On zaś stawiony przed króla olśnił go pozorami wpływów, zdobył więc dla siebie godność arcykapłańską, ofiarowując o trzysta talentów więcej od Jazona.
25 So having received the king's mandate, he returned bringing nothing worthy of the high priesthood: but having the mind of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast.	25 Zaopatrzony w listy królewskie wrócił z powrotem. Nie wykazał on wcale cech godnych stanowiska arcykapłana, bo tylko dyszał zawziętością okrutnego tyrana i złością dzikiego zwierza.
26 Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being himself undermined, was driven out a fugitive into the country of the Ammonites	26 Tak więc Jazon, który wygnał podstępnie własnego brata, sam został przez drugiego wygnany i zmuszony uciekać do kraju Ammonitów.
27 So Menelaus got the principality: but as for the money he had promised to the king he took no care, when Sostratus the governor of the castle called for	27 Menelaos zaś objął władzę, nic jednak nie wypłacił z tych sum, które obiecał królowi,
28 For to him appertained the gathering of the taxes: wherefore they were both called before the king.	28 choć domagał się ich Sostratos, dowódca zamku. Do niego bowiem należało pobieranie podatków. Z tego powodu obydwaj zostali wezwani przed króla.
29 And Menelaus was removed from the priesthood, Lysimachus his brother succeeding: and Sostratus was made governor of the Cyprians.	29 Wtedy Menelaos zostawił w swoim zastępstwie na stanowisku arcykapłańskim Lizymacha, własnego brata, Sostratos zaś Kratesa, dowódcę Cypryjczyków.
30 When these things were in doing, it fell out that they of Tharsus and Mallos raised a sedition, because they were given for a gift to Antiochis, the king's concubine.	30 Po tych wydarzeniach mieszkańcy Tarsu i Mallos zbuntowali się, dlatego że zostali podarowani królewskiej nałożnicy Antiochis.
31 The king therefore went in all haste to appease them, leaving Andronicus, one of his nobles, for his deputy.	31 Król więc natychmiast wyruszył, aby te sprawy załagodzić, pozostawiając w swoich zastępstwie Andronika, jednego z dostojników.
32 Then Menelaus supposing that he had found a convenient time, having stolen certain vessels of gold out of the temple, gave them to Andronicus, and others he had sold at Tyre, and in the neighbouring cities.	32 Menelaos zaś w przekonaniu, że nadeszła odpowiednia chwila, przywłaszczył sobie i podarował Andronikowi niektóre złote naczynia świątynne. Inne zaś udało mu się sprzedać w Tyrze i w okolicznych miastach.
33 Which when Onias understood most certainly, he reproved him, keeping himself in a safe place at Antioch beside Daphne.	33 Upewniwszy się o tym Oniasz ostro go upominał, usunąwszy się na miejsce azylu do Dafne, które leży koło Antiochii.
34 Whereupon Menelaus coming to Andronicus, desired him to kill Onias. And he went to Onias, and gave him his right hand with an oath, and (though he were suspected by him) persuaded him to come forth out of the sanctuary, and immediately slew him, without any regard to justice.	34 Na skutek tego Menelaos wziął na bok Andronika i wpłynął na niego, aby zgładził Oniasza. Ten więc przybył do Oniasza, namawiał go podstępnie do wyjścia i składając przysięgę podał mu swoją prawicę. Chociaż budził podejrzenia, udało mu się go skłonić do wyjścia z miejsca azylu. Natychmiast też zamordował go bez żadnych względów na sprawiedliwość.
35 For which cause not only the Jews, but also the other nations, conceived indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of so great a man.	35 Z tej to przyczyny nie tylko Żydzi, ale również wielu spomiędzy innych narodów oburzonych było i zasmuconych zamordowaniem tego męża.
36 And when the king was come back from the places of Cilicia, the Jews that were at Antioch, and also the Creaks went to him: complaining of the unjust murder of Onias.	36 Kiedy król powrócił z miast Cylicji, udali się do niego Żydzi z miasta oraz niektórzy Grecy oburzeni na to, że Oniasz został zamordowany wbrew prawu.
37 Antiochus therefore was grieved in his mind for Onias, and being moved to pity, shed tears, remembering the sobriety and modesty of the deceased.	37 Antioch zaś głęboko zasmucony oraz poruszony współczuciem aż do łez nad zmarłym, ze względu na jego roztropność i wielką łagodność,
38 And being inflamed to anger, he commanded Andronicus to be stripped of his purple, and to be led about through all the city: and that in the same place wherein he had committed the impiety against Onias, the sacrilegious wretch should be put to death, the Lord repaying him his deserved punishment.	38 zapłonąwszy gniewem natychmiast zdarł z Andronika purpurowy płaszcz i podarł jego szaty, i kazał go prowadzić przez całe miasto aż na to miejsce, na którym okazał na Oniaszu swoją bezbożność. Tam mordercę zgładził. Tak Pan wymierzył mu zasłużoną karę.
39 Now when many sacrileges had been committed by Lysimachus in the temple by the counsel of Menelaus, and the rumour of it was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, a great quantity of gold being already carried away.	39 Gdy Lizymach za zgodą Menelaosa popełnił wiele świętokradztw w mieście, a wieść o tym rozeszła się na zewnątrz, ludność zbuntowała się przeciw Lizymachowi. Wiele jednak złotych przedmiotów było już roztrwonionych.
40 Wherefore the multitude making an insurrection, and their minds being filled with anger, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began to use violence, one Tyrannus being captain, a man far gone both in age, and in madness.	40 Kiedy zaś tłumy podniosły się, a ich gniew doszedł do szczytu, Lizymach uzbroił blisko trzy tysiące ludzi i rozpoczął niesprawiedliwe, gwałtowne postępowanie. Dowódcą był pewien Auranos posunięty w latach i nie mniej w głupocie.
41 But when they perceived the attempt of Lysimachus, some caught up stones, some strong clubs: and some threw ashes upon Lysimachus,	41 Widząc gwałtowne postępowanie Lizymacha, jedni pochwycili za kamienie, drudzy za kije, niektórzy zaś nabrali leżącego tam piasku i jeden przez drugiego rzucali na ludzi Lizymacha.
42 And many of them were wounded, and some struck down to the ground, but all were put to flight: and as for the sacrilegious fellow himself, they slew him beside the treasury.	42 Skutkiem tego wielu z nich poranili, niektórych nawet zabili, wszystkich zaś zmusili do ucieczki. Samego świętokradcę zamordowali koło skarbca.
43 Now concerning these matters, an accusation was laid against Menelaus.	43 W tych sprawach zostało wszczęte dochodzenie przeciwko Menelaosowi.
44 And when the king was come to Tyre, three men were sent from the ancients to plead the cause before him.	44 Trzech mężów z rady starszych wniosło oskarżenie przeciw niemu, gdy król przybył do Tyru.
45 But Menelaus being convicted, promised Ptolemee to give him much money to persuade the king to favour him.	45 Menelaos widząc, że jest zgubiony, obiecał Ptolemeuszowi, synowi Dorymenesa, wielką sumę, aby ułagodzić króla.
46 So Ptolemee went to the king in a certain court where he was, as it were to cool himself, and brought him to be of another mind:	46 Ptolemeusz zaś wziął ze sobą króla do perystylu, jak gdyby po to, aby się ochłodzić, i wpłynął na zmianę poglądów króla.
47 So Menelaus who was guilty of all the evil, was acquitted by him of the accusations: and those poor men, who, if they had pleaded their cause even before Scythians, should have been judged innocent, were condemned to death.	47 Uwolnił on Menelaosa, winnego wszystkiego zła, o jakie był oskarżony, nieszczęśliwych zaś, którzy byliby uniewinnieni, nawet gdyby ich oskarżono przed Scytami, skazał na śmierć.
48 Thus they that prosecuted the cause for the city, and for the people, and the sacred vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment.	48 Zaraz też niesprawiedliwą karę ponieśli ci, którzy wstawili się za miasto, naród i święte naczynia.
49 Wherefore even the Tyrians being moved with indignation, were liberal towards their burial.	49 Z tej przyczyny nawet mieszkańcy Tyru oburzeni urządzili im uroczysty pogrzeb.
50 And so through the covetousness of them that were in power, Menelaus continued in authority, increasing in malice to the betraying of the citizens.	50 Menelaos zaś pozostał na stanowisku dzięki chciwości tych, którzy mieli władzę, będąc zaś głównym prześladowcą rodaków umacniał się w złu.
