DOUAI-RHEIMSJERUSALEM
Now it came to pass, after that Alexander the son of Philip the Macedonian, who first reigned in Greece, coming out of the land of Cethim, had overthrown Darius king of the Persians and Medes:1 Après qu'Alexandre, fils de Philippe, Macédonien sorti du pays de Chettiim, eut battu Darius, roi des Perseset des Mèdes, et fut devenu roi à sa place en commençant par l'Hellade,
He fought many battles, and took the strong holds of all, and slew the kings of the earth:2 il entreprit de nombreuses guerres, s'empara de mainte place forte et mit à mort les rois de lacontrée.
And he went through even to the ends of the earth, and took the spoils of many nations: and the earth was quiet before him.3 Il poussa jusqu'aux extrémités du monde en amassant les dépouilles d'une quantité de nations,et la terre se tut devant lui. Son coeur s'exalta et s'enfla d'orgueil;
And he gathered a power, and a very strong army: and his heart was exalted and lifted up.4 il rassembla une armée très puissante, soumit provinces, nations, dynastes et en fit sestributaires.
And he subdued countries of nations, and princes: and they became tributaries to him.5 Après cela, il dut s'aliter et connut qu'il allait mourir.
And after these things, he fell down upon his bed, and knew that he should die.6 Il fit venir ses officiers, les nobles qui avaient été élevés avec lui depuis le jeune âge, etpartagea entre eux son royaume pendant qu'il était encore en vie.
And he called his servants the nobles that were brought up with him from his youth: and he divided his kingdom among them, while he was yet alive.7 Alexandre avait régné douze ans quand il mourut.
And Alexander reigned twelve years, and he died.8 Ses officiers prirent le pouvoir chacun dans son gouvernement.
And his servants made themselves kings every one in his place:9 Tous ceignirent le diadème après sa mort, et leurs fils après eux durant de longues années: surla terre, ils firent foisonner le malheur.
And they all put crowns upon themselves after his death, and their sons after them many years, and evils were multiplied in the earth.10 Il sortit d'eux un rejeton impie, Antiochus Epiphane, fils du roi Antiochus, qui, d'abordotage à Rome, devint roi l'an 137 de la royauté des Grecs.
And there came out of them a wicked root, Antiochus the Illustrious, the son of king Antiochus, who had been a hostage at Rome: and he reigned in the hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.11 En ces jours-là surgit d'Israël une génération de vauriens qui séduisirent beaucoup depersonnes en disant: "Allons, faisons alliance avec les nations qui nous entourent, car depuis que nous noussommes séparés d'elles, bien des maux nous sont advenus."
In those days there went out of Israel wicked men, and they persuaded many, saying: Let us go, and make a covenant with the heathens that are round about us: for since we departed from them, many evils have befallen us.12 Ce discours leur parut bon.
And the word seemed good in their eyes.13 Plusieurs parmi le peuple s'empressèrent d'aller trouver le roi, qui leur donna l'autorisationd'observer les coutumes païennes.
And some of the people determined to do this, and went to the king: and he gave them license to do after the ordinances of the heathens.14 Ils construisirent donc un gymnase à Jérusalem, selon les usages des nations,
And they built a place of exercise in Jerusalem, according to the laws of the nations:15 se refirent des prépuces et renièrent l'alliance sainte pour s'associer aux nations. Ils sevendirent pour faire le mal.
And they made themselves prepuces, and departed from the holy covenant, and joined themselves to the heathens, and were sold to do evil.16 Quand il vit son règne affermi, Antiochus voulut devenir roi du pays d'Egypte, afin derégner sur les deux royaumes.
And the kingdom was established before Antiochus, and he had a mind to reign over the land of Egypt, that he might reign over two kingdoms.17 Entré en Egypte avec une armée imposante, des chars, des éléphants (et des cavaliers) et unegrande flotte,
And he entered into Egypt with a great multitude, with chariots and elephants, and horsemen, and a great number of ships:18 il attaqua le roi d'Egypte, Ptolémée, qui recula devant lui et s'enfuit; beaucoup d'hommesrestèrent sur le terrain.
And he made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt, but Ptolemee was afraid at his presence, and fled, and many were wounded unto death.19 Les villes fortes égyptiennes furent prises et Antiochus s'empara des dépouilles du pays.
And he took the strong cities in the land of Egypt: and he took the spoils of the land of Egypt.20 Ayant ainsi vaincu l'Egypte et pris le chemin du retour en l'année 143, il marcha contreIsraël et sur Jérusalem avec une armée imposante.
And after Antiochus had ravaged Egypt in the hundred and forty-third year, he returned and went up against Israel.21 Entré dans le sanctuaire avec arrogance, Antiochus enleva l'autel d'or, le candélabre delumière avec tous ses accessoires,
And he went up to Jerusalem with a great multitude.22 la table d'oblation, les vases à libation, les coupes, les cassolettes d'or, le voile, lescouronnes, la décoration d'or sur la façade du Temple, dont il détacha tout le placage.
And he proudly entered into the sanctuary, and took away the golden altar, and the candlestick of light, and all the vessels thereof, and the table of proposition, and the pouring vessels, and the vials, and the little mortars of gold, and the veil, and the crowns, and the golden ornament that was before the temple: and he broke them all in pieces.23 Il prit l'argent et l'or ainsi que les ustensiles précieux et fit main basse sur les trésors cachésqu'il trouva.
And he took the silver and gold, and the precious vessels: and he took the hidden treasures which he found: and when he had taken all away he departed into his own country.24 Emportant le tout, il s'en alla dans son pays; il versa beaucoup de sang et proféra des parolesd'une extrême insolence.
And he made a great slaughter of men, and spoke very proudly.25 Israël fut l'objet d'un grand deuil dans tout le pays:
And there was great mourning in Israel, and in every place where they were.26 Chefs et anciens gémirent, jeunes filles et jeunes gens dépérirent, et la beauté des femmess'altéra.
And the princes, and the ancients mourned, and the virgins and the young men were made feeble, and the beauty of the women was changed.27 Le nouveau marié entonna un thrène; assise dans la chambre, l'épouse fut en deuil.
Every bridegroom took up lamentation: and the bride that set in the marriage bed, mourned:28 La terre trembla à cause de ses habitants et la honte couvrit toute la maison de Jacob.
And the land was moved for the inhabitants thereof, and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion.29 Deux ans après, le roi envoya dans les villes de Juda le Mysarque, qui vint à Jérusalem avecune armée imposante.
And after two full years the king sent the chief collector of his tributes to the cities of Juda, and he came to Jerusalem with a great multitude.30 Il tint aux habitants des discours faussement pacifiques et gagna leur confiance, puis iltomba sur la ville à l'improviste, lui assénant un coup terrible, et fit périr beaucoup de gens d'Israël.
And he spoke to them peaceable words in deceit: and they believed him.31 Il pilla la ville, y mit le feu, détruisit ses maisons et son mur d'enceinte.
And he fell upon the city suddenly, and struck it with a great slaughter, and destroyed much people in Israel.32 Ses gens réduisirent en captivité les femmes et les enfants et s'approprièrent le bétail.
And he took the spoils of the city, and burnt it with fire, and threw down the houses thereof, and the walls thereof round about:33 Alors ils rebâtirent la Cité de David, avec un grand mur très fort, muni de tours puissantes etils s'en firent une citadelle.
And they took the women captive, and the children, and the cattle they possessed.34 Ils y installèrent une race de pécheurs, des vauriens, et ils s'y fortifièrent;
And they built the city of David with a great and strong wall, and with strong towers, and made it a fortress for them:35 ils y emmagasinèrent armes et provisions, y déposèrent les dépouilles de Jérusalem qu'ilsavaient rassemblées, et cela devint un piège redoutable.
And they placed there a sinful nation, wicked men, and they fortified themselves therein: and they stored up armour, and victuals, and gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem;36 Ce fut une embuscade pour le lieu saint, un adversaire maléfique en tout temps pour Israël.
And laid them up there: and they became a great snare.37 Ils répandirent le sang innocent autour du sanctuaire et souillèrent le lieu saint.
And this was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary, and an evil devil in Israel.38 A cause d'eux s'enfuirent les habitants de Jérusalem et celle-ci devint une colonied'étrangers; elle fut étrangère à sa progéniture et ses propres enfants l'abandonnèrent.
And they shed innocent blood round about the sanctuary, and defiled the holy place.39 Son sanctuaire désolé devint comme un désert, ses fêtes se changèrent en deuil, ses sabbatsen dérision et son honneur en mépris.
And the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away by reason of them, and the city was made the habitation to strangers, and she became a stranger to her own seed, and her children forsook her.40 A sa gloire se mesura son avilissement et sa grandeur fit place au deuil.
Her sanctuary was desolate like a wilderness, her festival days were turned into mourning, her sabbaths into reproach, her honours were brought to nothing.41 Le roi publia ensuite dans tout son royaume l'ordre de n'avoir à former tous qu'un seulpeuple
Her dishonour was increased according to her glory, and her excellency was turned into mourning.42 et de renoncer chacun à ses coutumes: toutes les nations se conformèrent aux prescriptionsroyales.
And king Antiochus wrote to all his kingdom, that all the people should be one: and every one should leave his own law.43 Beaucoup d'Israélites firent bon accueil à son culte, sacrifiant aux idoles et profanant lesabbat.
And all nations consented according to the word of king Antiochus.44 Le roi envoya aussi, par messagers, à Jérusalem et aux villes de Juda, des édits leurenjoignant de suivre des coutumes étrangères à leur pays,
And many of Israel consented to his service, and they sacrificed to idols, and profaned the sabbath.45 de bannir du sanctuaire holocaustes, sacrifice et libation, de profaner sabbats et fêtes,
And the king sent letters by the hands of messengers to Jerusalem, and to all the cities of Juda: that they should follow the law of the nations of the earth,46 de souiller le sanctuaire et tout ce qui est saint,
And should forbid holocausts and sacrifices, and atonements to be made in the temple of God.47 d'élever autels, lieux de culte et temples d'idoles, d'immoler des porcs et des animauximpurs,
And should prohibit the sabbath, and the festival days, to be celebrated.48 de laisser leurs fils incirconcis, de se rendre abominables par toute sorte d'impuretés et deprofanations,
And he commanded the holy places to be profaned, and the holy people of Israel.49 oubliant ainsi la Loi et altérant toutes les observances.
And he commanded altars to be built, and temples, and idols, and swine's flesh to be immolated, and unclean beasts.50 Quiconque n'agirait pas selon l'ordre du roi serait puni de mort.
And that they should leave their children uncircumcised, and let their souls be defiled with all uncleannesses, and abominations, to the end that they should forget the law, and should change all the justifications of God.51 Conformément à toutes ces prescriptions, le roi écrivit à tout son royaume, créa desinspecteurs pour tout le peuple et enjoignit aux villes de Juda de sacrifier dans chaque ville.
And that whosoever would not do according to the word of king Antiochus should be put to death.52 Beaucoup de gens du peuple se rallièrent à eux, quiconque en somme abandonnait la Loi. Ilsfirent du mal dans le pays.
According to all these words he wrote to his whole kingdom, and he appointed rulers over the people that should force them to do these things.53 Ils réduisirent Israël à se cacher dans tous ses lieux de refuge.
And they commanded the cities of Juda to sacrifice.54 Le quinzième jour de Kisleu en l'an 145, le roi construisit l'Abomination de la désolation surl'autel des holocaustes et, dans les villes de Juda circonvoisines, on éleva des autels.
Then many of the people were gathered to them that had forsaken the law of the Lord: and they committed evils in the land:55 Aux portes des maisons et sur les places, on brûlait de l'encens.
And they drove away the people of Israel into lurking holes, and into the secret places of fugitives.56 Quant aux livres de la Loi, ceux qu'on trouvait étaient jetés au feu après avoir été lacérés.
On the fifteenth day of the month Casleu, in the hundred and forty-fifth year, king Antiochus set up the abominable idol of desolation upon the altar of God, and they built altars throughout all the cities of Juda round about:57 Découvrait-on chez quelqu'un un exemplaire de l'Alliance, ou quelque autre se conformait-ilà la Loi, la décision du roi le mettait à mort.
And they burnt incense, and sacrificed at the doors of the houses, and in the streets.58 Ils sévissaient chaque mois dans les villes contre les Israélites pris en contravention;
And they cut in pieces, and burnt with fire the books of the law of God:59 le 25 de chaque mois, on sacrifiait sur l'autel dressé sur l'autel des holocaustes.
And every one with whom the books of the testament of the Lord were found, and whosoever observed the law of the Lord, they put to death, according to the edict of the king.60 Les femmes qui avaient fait circoncire leurs enfants, ils les mettaient à mort, suivant l'édit,
Thus by their power did they deal with the people of Israel, that were found in the cities month after month.61 avec leurs nourrissons pendus à leur cou, exécutant aussi leurs proches et ceux qui avaientopéré la circoncision.
And on the five and twentieth day of the month they sacrificed upon the altar of the idol that was over against the altar of God.62 Cependant plusieurs en Israël se montrèrent fermes et furent assez forts pour ne pas mangerde mets impurs.
Now the women that circumcised their children, were slain according to the commandment of king Antiochus.63 Ils acceptèrent de mourir plutôt que de se contaminer par la nourriture et de profaner lasainte alliance et, en effet, ils moururent.
And they hanged the children about their necks in all their houses: and those that had circumcised them, they put to death.64 Une grande colère plana sur Israël.
And many of the people of Israel determined with themselves, that they would not eat unclean things: and they chose rather to die than to be defiled with unclean meats.
And they would not break the holy law of God, and they were put to death:
And there was very great wrath upon the people.
