1 But Holofernes on the next day gave orders to his army, to go up against Bethulia.	1 Il giorno seguente Oloferne diede ordine a tutto il suo esercito e a tutta la moltitudine di coloro che si erano aggiunti a lui come alleati di muovere il campo contro Betulia, occupare le vie d'accesso della montagna e far la guerra contro gl'Israeliti.
2 Now there were in his troops a hundred and twenty thousand footmen, and two and twenty thousand horsemen, besides the preparations of those men who had been taken, and who had been brought away out of the provinces and cities of all the youth.	2 In quel giorno quindi ogni uomo valido tra loro si mise in marcia. L'esercito di quei guerrieri era di centosettantamila fanti e di dodicimila cavalieri, senza contare gli addetti ai servizi e altri uomini ch'erano con loro a piedi, in numero immenso.
3 All these prepared themselves together to fight against the children of Israel, and they came by the hillside to the top, which looketh toward Dothain, from the place which is called Behlma, unto Chelmon, which is over against Esdrelon.	3 Si accamparono nella vallata vicino a Betulia presso la sorgente, estendendosi in profondità sopra Dotain fino a Belbain e in lunghezza da Betulia fino a Kiamon situata dirimpetto a Esdrelon.
4 But the children of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, putting ashes upon their heads, praying with one accord, that the God of Israel would shew his mercy upon his people.	4 Quando videro la moltitudine di costoro, gl'Israeliti rimasero profondamente turbati e si dicevano l'un l'altro: "Ora costoro brucheranno la superficie di tutto il paese e né i monti più alti né le valli o le colline potranno resistere al loro peso".
5 And taking their arms of war, they posted themselves at the places, which by a narrow pathway lead directly between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.	5 Ognuno prese le proprie armi e dopo aver acceso fuochi sulle torri, stettero a fare la guardia per tutta quella notte.
6 Now Holofernes, in going round about, found that the fountains which supplied them with water, ran through an aqueduct without the city on the south side: and he commanded their aqueduct to he cut off.	6 Il secondo giorno Oloferne fece uscire tutta la sua cavalleria alla vista degl'Israeliti ch'erano in Betulia,
7 Nevertheless there were springs not far from the walls, out of which they were seen secretly to draw water, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.	7 ispezionò le vie d'accesso alla loro città e, ricercate le sorgenti d'acqua, le occupò collocandovi guarnigioni di uomini armati; quindi egli ritornò al suo esercito.
8 But the children of Ammon and Moab came to Holofernes, saying: The children of Israel trust not in their spears, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense, and the steep hires and precipices guard them.	8 Allora gli si accostarono tutti i capi dei figli di Esaù, tutti i comandanti del popolo di Moab e gli strateghi della costa e gli dissero:
9 Wherefore that thou mayst overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs that they may not draw water out of them, and thou shalt destroy them without sword, or at least being wearied out they will yield up their city, which they suppose, because it is situate in the mountains, to be impregnable.	9 "Voglia ascoltare il nostro signore una parola, per evitare qualunque guaio al tuo esercito.
10 And these words pleased Holofernes, and his officers, and he placed all round about a hundred men at every spring.	10 Questo popolo degl'Israeliti non fa affidamento tanto sulle proprie lance, quanto sull'altezza dei monti sui quali essi abitano; certo non è facile scalare le creste dei loro monti.
11 And when they had kept this watch for full twenty days, the cisterns, and the reserve of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was not within the city, enough to satisfy them, no not for one day, for water was daily given out to the people by measure.	11 Pertanto, o signore, non combattere contro di loro, come si usa in una battaglia ordinata, così nessun uomo del tuo esercito cadrà.
12 Then all the men and women, young men, and children, gathering themselves together to Ozias, all together with one voice,	12 Rimani nel tuo accampamento e fa' ivi rimanere ogni uomo del tuo esercito; i tuoi servitori s'impadroniscano della sorgente d'acqua, che scaturisce alla radice del monte,
13 Said: God be judge between us and thee, for thou hast done evil against us, in that thou wouldst not speak peaceably with the Assyrians, and for this cause God hath sold us into their hands.	13 perché di là attingono acqua tutti gli abitanti di Betulia. La sete li consumerà e consegneranno la loro città. Noi e la nostra gente saliremo sulle vicine creste dei monti, ci accamperemo su di esse per sorvegliare che nessun uomo esca dalla città.
14 And therefore there is no one to help us, while we are cast down before their eyes in thirst, and sad destruction.	14 Saranno consunti dalla fame, loro, le loro mogli e i loro figli, e prima che la spada piombi su di loro, giaceranno distesi sulle piazze della loro dimora.
15 And now assemble ye all that are in the city, that we may of our own accord yield ourselves all up to the people of Holofernes.	15 Così darai loro un duro contraccambio, perché si sono ribellati e non sono voluti uscire pacificamente incontro alla tua persona".
16 For it is better, that being captives we should live and bless the Lord, than that we should die, and be a reproach to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our infants die before our eyes.	16 Il loro discorso piacque a Oloferne e a tutti i suoi ministri e perciò egli diede ordine di fare come avevano proposto.
17 We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who taketh vengeance upon us according to our sins, conjuring you to deliver now the city into the hand of the army of Holofernes, that our end may be short by the edge of the sword, which is made longer by the drought of thirst.	17 Si mosse un distaccamento di Moabiti e cinquemila Assiri con essi si accamparono nella vallata occupando i punti d'acqua e le sorgenti degl'Israeliti.
18 And when they had said these things, there was great weeping and lamentation of all in the assembly, and for many hours with one voice they cried to God, saying:	18 Dal canto loro i figli di Esaù e gli Ammoniti salirono e si accamparono sulla montagna di fronte a Dotain, donde inviarono parte dei loro uomini verso meridione e ad oriente di fronte a Egrebel, situata vicino a Chus, sul torrente Mochmur. Il resto dell'esercito degli Assiri si accampò nella pianura, ricoprendo tutta la superficie del paese. Le tende e i loro equipaggiamenti, essendo molto ingenti, formavano un accampamento di grande mole.
19 We have sinned with our fathers we have done unjustly, we have commited iniquity:	19 Gl'Israeliti allora elevarono grida al Signore, loro Dio, con l'animo scoraggiato, poiché tutti i loro nemici li avevano circondati e non era possibile evadere di mezzo a loro.
20 Have thou mercy on us, because thou art good, or punish our iniquities by chastising us thyself, and deliver not them that trust in thee to a people that knoweth not thee,	20 Il campo assiro al completo, fanti, carri e cavalli, proseguì l'accerchiamento per trentaquattro giorni, e a tutti gli abitanti di Betulia si esaurì ogni recipiente d'acqua.
21 That they may not say among the gentiles: Where is their God?	21 Le cisterne si vuotarono e non ebbero acqua da bere a sazietà neppure per un giorno, perché veniva loro distribuita in misura razionata.
22 And when being wearied with these cries, and tired with these weepings, they held their peace,	22 I loro fanciulli si accasciavano, le donne e i giovani venivano meno per la sete e cadevano nelle piazze della città e agli sbocchi delle porte, non rimanendo in essi alcuna energia.
23 Ozias rising up all in tears, said: Be of good courage, my brethren, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.	23 Allora il popolo, giovani, donne e bambini, si radunò intorno a Ozia e ai capi della città; e gridarono ad alta voce dicendo al cospetto di tutti gli anziani:
24 For perhaps he will put a stop to his indignation, and will give glory to his own name.	24 "Che Dio sia giudice tra voi e noi, perché ci avete fatto un grave torto, non avendo svolto trattative di pace con gli Assiri.
25 But if after five days be past there come no aid, we will do the things which you leave spoken.	25 Ora non c'è nessuno che ci possa aiutare, perché Dio ci ha venduto nelle loro mani, per essere abbattuti davanti a loro dalla sete e da grande rovina.
	26 Ormai chiamateli e consegnate la città intera alla gente di Oloferne e a tutto il suo esercito perché la saccheggino.
	27 E' meglio per noi diventare loro preda; saremo certo loro schiavi, ma almeno rimarremo vivi e non vedremo con i nostri occhi la morte dei nostri bambini, né le donne e i figli nostri esalare l'anima.
	28 Vi scongiuriamo per il cielo e la terra, per il nostro Dio e Signore dei nostri padri, che ci punisce secondo i nostri peccati e le colpe dei nostri padri, di agire oggi stesso come vi abbiamo detto".
	29 Vi fu allora un gran pianto generale di tutti in mezzo all'assemblea e a gran voce gridarono al Signore Dio.
	30 Ozia disse loro: "Coraggio, fratelli, resistiamo ancora cinque giorni, durante i quali il Signore, nostro Dio, ci userà di nuovo misericordia; certo egli non ci abbandonerà fino all'ultimo.
	31 Se, passati questi giorni, non ci giungerà alcun aiuto, farò come avete proposto".
	32 Così rimandò il popolo, ciascuno nel suo quartiere; gli uomini ritornarono sulle mura e sulle torri della città, mentre rimandò le donne e i bambini alle loro case, ma nella città si stava in grande costernazione.
