1 Now Sarai the wife of Abram, had brought forth no children; having a handmaid, an Egyptian, named Agar,	1 Sarai, la moglie di Abram, non gli aveva dato figli, ma aveva una schiava egiziana, di nome Agar.
2 She said to her husband: Behold, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: go in unto my handmaid, it may be I may have children of her at least. And when he agreed to her request,	2 Sarai disse ad Abram: "Ecco, il Signore mi ha impedito di partorire; deh, accostati alla mia schiava; forse da lei potrò avere figli". E Abram ascoltò la voce di Sarai.
3 She took Agar the Egyptian her handmaid, ten years after they first dwelt in the land of Chanaan, and gave her to her husband to wife.	3 Così, Sarai, moglie di Abram, prese l'egiziana Agar, sua schiava, al termine di dieci anni dal suo soggiorno nella terra di Canaan, e la diede in moglie ad Abram, suo marito.
4 And he went in to her. But she, perceiving that she was with child, despised her mistress.	4 Egli si accostò ad Agar, che restò incinta. Ma quando essa si accorse di essere incinta, la sua padrona non contò più nulla per lei.
5 And Sarai said to Abram: Thou dost unjustly with me: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom, and she perceiving herself to be with child, despiseth me. The Lord judge between me and thee.	5 Allora Sarai disse ad Abram: "Il mio torto è a tuo carico! Sono stata io a metterti in grembo la mia schiava, ma da quando si è accorta di essere incinta, io non conto più niente per lei. Il Signore sia giudice tra me e te!".
6 And Abram made answer, and said to her: Behold thy handmaid is in thy own hand, use her its it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai afflicted her, she ran away.	6 Abram disse a Sarai: "Ecco, la tua schiava è in tuo potere; falle quello che ti par bene". Sarai allora la maltrattò, sì che quella fuggì dalla sua presenza.
7 And the angel of the Lord having found her, by a fountain of water in the wilderness, which is in the way to Sur in the desert,	7 La trovò l'angelo del Signore presso una sorgente d'acqua, nel deserto, sulla strada di Sur,
8 He said to her: Agar, handmaid of Sarai, whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? And she answered: I flee from the face of Sarai, my mistress.	8 e le disse: "Agar, schiava di Sarai, da dove vieni e dove vai?". Rispose: "Fuggo dalla presenza della mia padrona Sarai".
9 And the angel of the Lord said to her: Return to thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hand.	9 Le disse l'angelo del Signore: "Ritorna dalla tua padrona e sottomettiti al suo potere".
10 And again he said: I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, and it shall not be numbered for multitude.	10 Le disse ancora l'angelo del Signore: "Moltiplicherò assai la tua discendenza e non la si potrà contare a causa della sua moltitudine".
11 And again: Behold, said he, thou art with child, and thou shalt bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Ismael, because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.	11 Soggiunse poi ancora l'angelo del Signore: "Eccoti incinta: partorirai un figlio e lo chiamerai Ismaele, perché il Signore ha ascoltato la tua afflizione.
12 He shall be a wild man: his hand will be against all men, and all men's hands against him: and he shall pitch his tents over against all his brethren.	12 Costui sarà come un onagro della steppa; la sua mano sarà contro tutti e la mano di tutti contro di lui; e abiterà di fronte a tutti i suoi fratelli".
13 And she called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her: Thou the God who hast seen me. For she said: Verily here have I seen the hinder parts of him that seeth me.	13 Allora Agar diede questo nome al Signore che le aveva parlato: "Tu sei il Dio della visione", perché diceva: "Qui dunque ho ancora visto, dopo la mia visione?".
14 Therefore she called that well, The well of him that liveth and seeth me. The same is between Cades and Bared.	14 Per questo quel pozzo si chiamò: Pozzo di Lacai-Roi; è appunto quello che si trova tra Kades e Bered.
15 And Agar brought forth a son to Abram: who called his name Ismael.	15 Poi Agar partorì ad Abram un figlio, e Abram chiamò Ismaele il figlio partoritogli da Agar.
16 Abram was fourscore and six years old when Agar brought him forth Ismael.	16 Abram aveva ottantasei anni quando Agar gli partorì Ismaele.
