Giosuè 9

DIODATI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 ORA, come tutti i re ch’erano di qua dal Giordano, nel monte, e nella pianura, e lungo tutto il lito del mar grande, fin dirimpetto al Libano, l’Hitteo, l’Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferizzeo, l’Hivveo, e il Gebuseo, ebbero intese queste cose,	1 When the news reached the kings west of the Jordan, in the mountain regions and in the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea as far as Lebanon: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites,
2 si adunarono tutti insieme per guerreggiar con Giosuè, e con Israele, di pari consentimento	2 they all formed an alliance to launch a common attack against Joshua and Israel.
3 Ma gli abitanti di Gabaon, avendo udito ciò che Giosuè avea fatto a Gerico e ad Ai,	3 On learning what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, the inhabitants of Gibeon
4 si adoperarono anch’essi, ma con inganno; perciocchè andarono, e fecero provvisione di vittuaglia, e presero de’ sacchi logori, sopra i loro asini, e degli otri di vino logori, ch’erano stati schiantati e poi ricuciti;	4 put into effect a device of their own. They chose provisions for a journey, making use of old sacks for their asses, and old wineskins, torn and mended.
5 e de’ calzamenti logori, e risarciti ne’ piedi; e dei vestimenti logori indosso; e tutto il pane della lor provvisione era secco e mucido.	5 They wore old, patched sandals and shabby garments; and all the bread they took was dry and crumbly.
6 E andarono a Giosuè, nel campo, in Ghilgal, e dissero a lui e a’ principali d’Israele: Noi siamo venuti di lontano paese; ora dunque fate patto con noi.	6 Thus they journeyed to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, where they said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a distant land to propose that you make an alliance with us."
7 E i principali d’Israele dissero a quegli Hivvei: Forse voi abitate nel mezzo di noi; come dunque faremo noi lega con voi?	7 But the men of Israel replied to the Hivites, "You may be living in land that is ours. How, then, can we make an alliance with you?"
8 Ma essi dissero a Giosuè: Noi siamo tuoi servitori. E Giosuè disse loro: Chi siete voi, e donde venite?	8 But they answered Joshua, "We are your servants." Then Joshua asked them, "Who are you? Where do you come from?"
9 Ed essi gli dissero: I tuoi servitori son venuti di molto lontan paese, alla fama del Signore Iddio tuo; perciocchè noi abbiamo udita la sua fama, e tutto ciò ch’egli ha fatto in Egitto,	9 They answered him, "Your servants have come from a far-off land, because of the fame of the LORD, your God. For we have heard reports of all that he did in Egypt
10 e tutto ciò ch’egli ha fatto a’ due re degli Amorrei, ch’erano di là dal Giordano; a Sihon, re di Hesbon, e ad Og, re di Basan, che dimorava in Astarot.	10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth.
11 E i nostri Anziani, e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese, ci hanno detto: Prendete in mano della provvisione per lo viaggio, e andate incontro a coloro, e dite loro: Noi siamo vostri servitori; fate dunque patto con noi.	11 So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take along provisions for the journey and go to meet them. Say to them: We are your servants; we propose that you make an alliance with us.'
12 Quest’è il nostro pane; noi lo prendemmo caldo dalle case nostre per nostra provvisione, nel giorno che partimmo per venire a voi; ma ora, ecco egli è secco, ed è diventato mucido;	12 This bread of ours was still warm when we brought it from home as provisions the day we left to come to you, but now it is dry and crumbled.
13 e questi sono gli otri del vino, i quali noi empiemmo tutti nuovi; ed ecco, sono schiantati; e questi nostri vestimenti, e i nostri calzamenti, si son logorati per lo molto lungo viaggio.	13 Here are our wineskins, which were new when we filled them, but now they are torn. Look at our garments and sandals, which are worn out from the very long journey."
14 E que’ personaggi presero della lor provvisione, e non domandarono la bocca del Signore	14 Then the Israelite princes partook of their provisions, without seeking the advice of the LORD.
15 E Giosuè fece pace con loro, e patteggiò con loro, che li lascerebbe vivere; e i principali della raunanza lo giurarono loro.	15 So Joshua made an alliance with them and entered into an agreement to spare them, which the princes of the community sealed with an oath.
16 Ma tre giorni appresso ch’ebbero fatto patto con loro, intesero ch’erano lor vicini, e che abitavano nel mezzo di loro.	16 Three days after the agreement was entered into, the Israelites learned that these people were from nearby, and would be living in Israel.
17 Perciocchè al terzo giorno, i figliuoli d’Israele si mossero, e vennero alle lor città, ch’erano Gabaon, e Chefira, e Beerot, e Chiriat-iearim.	17 The third day on the road, the Israelites came to their cities of Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim,
18 E i figliuoli d’Israele non li percossero; perciocchè i principali della raunanza aveano giurato loro per lo Signore Iddio d’Israele. E tutta la raunanza mormorò contro a’ principali	18 but did not attack them, because the princes of the community had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. When the entire community grumbled against the princes,
19 E tutti i principali dissero a tutta la raunanza: Noi abbiamo loro giurato per lo Signore Iddio d’Israele; perciò ora non li possiam toccare.	19 these all remonstrated with the people, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and so we cannot harm them.
20 Facciamo loro questo, e lasciamoli vivere; acciocchè non vi sia indegnazione contro a noi, per cagione del giuramento che abbiamo loro fatto.	20 Let us therefore spare their lives and so deal with them that we shall not be punished for the oath we have sworn to them."
21 Così i principali dissero loro, che si lascerebbero vivere; ma furono ordinati tagliatori di legne, e attignitori d’acqua, per tutta la raunanza; come i principali dissero loro	21 Thus the princes recommended that they be let live, as hewers of wood and drawers of water for the entire community; and the community did as the princes advised them.
22 Giosuè adunque li chiamò, e parlò loro, dicendo: Perchè ci avete voi ingannati, dicendo: Noi siamo d’un paese molto lontan da voi; e pur voi abitate nel mezzo di noi?	22 Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them, "Why did you lie to us and say that you lived at a great distance from us, when you will be living in our very midst?
23 Ora dunque voi siete maledetti, e giammai non sarà che non vi sieno d’infra voi de’ servi, e de’ tagliatori di legne, e degli attignitori di acqua, per la Casa dell’Iddio mio.	23 For this are you accursed: every one of you shall always be a slave (hewers of wood and drawers of water) for the house of my God."
24 Ed essi risposero a Giosuè, e dissero: Noi l’abbiam fatto, perciocchè era stato rapportato per cosa certa a’ tuoi servitori ciò che il Signore Iddio tuo avea comandato a Mosè, suo servitore, di darvi tutto il paese, e di distruggere d’innanzi a voi tutti gli abitanti del paese; laonde noi, temendo grandemente di voi per le nostre persone, abbiamo fatto questa cosa;	24 They answered Joshua, "Your servants were fully informed of how the LORD, your God, commanded his servant Moses that you be given the entire land and that all its inhabitants be destroyed before you. Since, therefore, at your advance, we were in great fear for our lives, we acted as we did.
25 e ora eccoci nelle tue mani; fa’ inverso noi come ti parrà buono e diritto di farci.	25 And now that we are in your power, do with us what you think fit and right."
26 Egli adunque fece loro così; e li scampò dalle mani de’ figliuoli d’Israele, sì che non li ammazzarono.	26 Joshua did what he had decided: while he saved them from being killed by the Israelites,
27 E in quel giorno Giosuè li ordinò tagliatori di legne, e attignitori d’acqua, per la raunanza, e per l’Altare del Signore, in qualunque luogo egli eleggerebbe; il che dura fino al dì d’oggi	27 at the same time he made them, as they still are, hewers of wood and drawers of water for the community and for the altar of the LORD, in the place of the LORD'S choice.
