1 Un tozzo di pane secco con tranquillità è meglio di una casa piena di banchetti festosi e di discordia.	1 Better a mouthful of dry bread with peace than a house fil ed with quarrelsome sacrifices.
2 Lo schiavo intelligente prevarrà su un figlio disonorato e avrà parte con i fratelli all'eredità.	2 A shrewd servant comes off better than an unworthy child, he will share the inheritance with thebrothers.
3 Il crogiuolo è per l'argento e il forno per l'oro, ma chi prova i cuori è il Signore.	3 A furnace for silver, a foundry for gold, but Yahweh for the testing of hearts!
4 Il maligno presta attenzione a un labbro maledico, il bugiardo ascolta una lingua nociva.	4 An evil-doer pays heed to malicious talk, a liar listens to a slanderous tongue.
5 Chi deride il povero offende il suo creatore, chi gioisce della sciagura altrui non resterà impunito.	5 To mock the poor is to insult the Creator, no one who laughs at distress wil go unpunished.
6 Corona dei vecchi sono i figli dei figli, onore dei figli i loro padri.	6 The crown of the aged is their children's children; the children's glory is their father.
7 Non conviene all'insensato un linguaggio elevato, ancor meno al principe un linguaggio falso.	7 Fine words do not become the foolish, false words become a prince stil less.
8 Il dono è come un talismano per il proprietario: dovunque si volga ha successo.	8 A gift works like a talisman for one who holds it: it brings prosperity at every turn.
9 Chi copre la colpa si concilia l'amicizia, ma chi la divulga divide gli amici.	9 Whoever covers an offence promotes love, whoever again raises the matter divides friends.
10 Fa più una minaccia all'assennato che cento percosse allo stolto.	10 A reproof makes more impression on a person of understanding than a hundred strokes on a fool.
11 Il malvagio non cerca altro che la ribellione, ma gli sarà mandato contro un messaggero senza pietà.	11 The wicked person thinks of nothing but rebellion, but a cruel messenger wil be sent to such a one.
12 Meglio incontrare un'orsa privata dei figli che uno stolto in preda alla follia.	12 Rather come on a bear robbed of her cubs than on a fool in his fol y.
13 Chi rende male per bene vedrà sempre la sventura in casa.	13 Disaster wil never be far from the house of one who returns evil for good.
14 Iniziare un litigio è come aprire una diga, prima che la lite si esasperi, troncala.	14 As well unleash a flood as start a dispute; desist before the quarrel breaks out.
15 Assolvere il reo e condannare il giusto sono due cose in abominio al Signore.	15 To absolve the guilty and condemn the upright, both alike are abhorrent to Yahweh.
16 A che serve il denaro in mano allo stolto? Forse a comprar la sapienza, se egli non ha senno?	16 What good is money in the hand of a fool? To buy wisdom with it? The desire is not there.
17 Un amico vuol bene sempre, è nato per essere un fratello nella sventura.	17 A friend is a friend at all times, it is for adversity that a brother is born.
18 È privo di senno l'uomo che offre garanzie e si dà come garante per il suo prossimo.	18 Whoever offers guarantees lacks sense and goes surety for a neighbour.
19 Chi ama la rissa ama il delitto, chi alza troppo l'uscio cerca la rovina.	19 The double-dealer loves sin, the proud courts ruin.
20 Un cuore perverso non troverà mai felicità, una lingua tortuosa andrà in malora.	20 The tortuous of heart finds no happiness, the perverse of speech fal s into misery.
21 Chi genera uno stolto ne avrà afflizione; non può certo gioire il padre di uno sciocco.	21 He who fathers a stupid child does so to his sorrow, the father of a fool knows no joy.
22 Un cuore lieto fa bene al corpo, uno spirito abbattuto inaridisce le ossa.	22 A glad heart is excel ent medicine, a depressed spirit wastes the bones away.
23 L'iniquo accetta regali di sotto il mantello per deviare il corso della giustizia.	23 Under cover of his cloak a bad man takes a gift to pervert the course of justice.
24 L'uomo prudente ha la sapienza davanti a sé, ma gli occhi dello stolto vagano in capo al mondo.	24 The intelligent has wisdom there before him, but the eyes of a fool range to the ends of the earth.
25 Un figlio stolto è un tormento per il padre e un'amarezza per colei che lo ha partorito.	25 A foolish child is a father's sorrow, and the grief of her who gave the child birth.
26 Non sta bene multare chi ha ragione e peggio ancora colpire gli innocenti.	26 To fine the upright is indeed a crime, to strike the noble is an injustice.
27 Chi è parco di parole possiede la scienza; uno spirito calmo è un uomo intelligente.	27 Whoever can control the tongue knows what knowledge is, someone of understanding keeps a cooltemper.
28 Anche lo stolto, se tace, passa per saggio e, se tien chiuse le labbra, per intelligente.	28 If the fool holds his tongue, he may pass for wise; if he seals his lips, he may pass for intel igent.
