1 Mientras Apolo permanecía en Corinto, Pablo atravesando la región interior, llegó a Efeso. Allí encontró a algunos discípulos	1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior of the country and came (down) to Ephesus where he found some disciples.
2 y les preguntó: «Cuando ustedes abrazaron la fe, ¿recibieron el Espíritu Santo?». Ellos le dijeron: «Ni siquiera hemos oído decir que hay un Espíritu Santo».	2 He said to them, "Did you receive the holy Spirit when you became believers?" They answered him, "We have never even heard that there is a holy Spirit."
3 «Entonces, ¿qué bautismo recibieron?», les preguntó Pablo. «El de Juan», respondieron.	3 He said, "How were you baptized?" They replied, "With the baptism of John."
4 Pablo les dijo: «Juan bautizaba con el bautismo de penitencia, diciendo al pueblo que creyera en el que vendría después de él, es decir, en Jesús».	4 Paul then said, "John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus."
5 Al oír estas palabras, ellos se hicieron bautizar en el nombre del Señor Jesús.	5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 Pablo les impuso las manos, y descendió sobre ellos el Espíritu Santo. Entonces comenzaron a hablar en distintas lenguas y a profetizar.	6 And when Paul laid (his) hands on them, the holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
7 Eran en total unos doce hombres.	7 Altogether there were about twelve men.
8 Pablo fue luego a la sinagoga y durante tres meses predicó abiertamente, hablando sobre el Reino de Dios y tratando de persuadir a los oyentes.	8 He entered the synagogue, and for three months debated boldly with persuasive arguments about the kingdom of God.
9 Pero como algunos se obstinaban y se negaban a creer, denigrando el Camino del Señor delante de la asamblea, Pablo rompió con ellos. Luego tomó aparte a sus discípulos y dialogaba diariamente en la escuela de Tirano.	9 But when some in their obstinacy and disbelief disparaged the Way before the assembly, he withdrew and took his disciples with him and began to hold daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
10 Así lo hizo durante dos años, de modo que todos los habitantes de la provincia de Asia, judíos y paganos, tuvieron ocasión de escuchar la Palabra del Señor.	10 This continued for two years with the result that all the inhabitants of the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord, Jews and Greeks alike.
11 Por intermedio de Pablo, Dios realizaba milagros poco comunes,	11 So extraordinary were the mighty deeds God accomplished at the hands of Paul
12 hasta tal punto que el aplicarse sobre los enfermos pañuelos o lienzos que habían tocado el cuerpo de Pablo, aquellos se curaban y quedaban libres de los malos espíritus.	12 that when face cloths or aprons that touched his skin were applied to the sick, their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.
13 Algunos exorcistas ambulantes judíos, hicieron la prueba de pronunciar el nombre del Señor Jesús sobre los poseídos por los malos espíritus, diciendo: «Yo los conjuro por ese Jesús que anuncia Pablo».	13 Then some itinerant Jewish exorcists tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those with evil spirits, saying, "I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches."
14 Un cierto Sevas, Sumo Sacerdote judío, tenía siete hijos que practicaban estos exorcismos.	14 When the seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, tried to do this,
15 El espíritu malo les respondió: «Yo conozco a Jesús y sé quién es Pablo, pero ustedes, ¿quiénes son?».	15 the evil spirit said to them in reply, "Jesus I recognize, Paul I know, but who are you?"
16 Y el hombre poseído por el espíritu malo, abalanzándose sobre los exorcistas, los dominó a todos y los maltrató de tal manera que debieron escaparse de esa casa desnudos y cubiertos de heridas.	16 The person with the evil spirit then sprang at them and subdued them all. He so overpowered them that they fled naked and wounded from that house.
17 Todos los habitantes de Efeso, tanto judíos como paganos, se enteraron de este hecho y, llenos de temor, glorificaban el nombre del Señor Jesús.	17 When this became known to all the Jews and Greeks who lived in Ephesus, fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in great esteem.
18 Muchos de los que habían abrazado la fe vinieron a confesar abiertamente sus prácticas,	18 Many of those who had become believers came forward and openly acknowledged their former practices.
19 y un buen número de los que se habían dedicado a la magia traían sus libros y los quemaban delante de todos. Se estimó que el valor de estos libros alcanzaba a unas cincuenta mil monedas de plata.	19 Moreover, a large number of those who had practiced magic collected their books and burned them in public. They calculated their value and found it to be fifty thousand silver pieces.
20 Así, por el poder del Señor, la Palabra se difundía y se afianzaba.	20 Thus did the word of the Lord continue to spread with influence and power.
21 Después de esto, Pablo se propuso ir a Jerusalén pasando por Macedonia y Acaya. «Primero iré allí, decía, y luego tendré que ir también a Roma».	21 When this was concluded, Paul made up his mind to travel through Macedonia and Achaia, and then to go on to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must visit Rome also."
22 Envió a Macedonia a dos de sus colaboradores, Timoteo y Erasto, y él permaneció en Asia un tiempo más.	22 Then he sent to Macedonia two of his assistants, Timothy and Erastus, while he himself stayed for a while in the province of Asia.
23 Fue entonces, cuando se produjeron graves desórdenes a causa del Camino del Señor.	23 About that time a serious disturbance broke out concerning the Way.
24 Un orfebre llamado Demetrio fabricaba reproducciones en plata del templo de Diana, proporcionando así abundante trabajo a los artesanos.	24 There was a silversmith named Demetrius who made miniature silver shrines of Artemis and provided no little work for the craftsmen.
25 Demetrio los reunió, junto con los que habían trabajos similares, y les dijo: «Ustedes saben perfectamente que nuestro bienestar depende de esta industria.	25 He called a meeting of these and other workers in related crafts and said, "Men, you know well that our prosperity derives from this work.
26 Pero ahora ustedes mismos ven y oyen que no solamente en Efeso, sino también en casi toda la provincia de Asia, ese Pablo ha conquistado y seducido a mucha gente, pretendiendo que los dioses fabricados por mano de hombre no son dioses.	26 As you can now see and hear, not only in Ephesus but throughout most of the province of Asia this Paul has persuaded and misled a great number of people by saying that gods made by hands are not gods at all.
27 De esa manera, no solamente nuestra profesión está amenazada de caer en el descrédito, sino que el templo mismo de la gran diosa Diana corre el riesgo de ser tenido por nada, y aquella a quien adoran toda el Asia y el mundo entero, terminará por quedar despojada de su prestigio.».	27 The danger grows, not only that our business will be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be of no account, and that she whom the whole province of Asia and all the world worship will be stripped of her magnificence."
28 Al oír estas palabras, la multitud se enfureció y comenzó a gritar: «¡Viva la gran Diana de los efesios!»,	28 When they heard this, they were filled with fury and began to shout, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
29 y se produjo un gran desorden en la ciudad. Todos irrumpieron en el teatro, arrastrando a los macedonios Gayo y Aristarco, compañeros de viaje de Pablo.	29 The city was filled with confusion, and the people rushed with one accord into the theater, seizing Gaius and Aristarchus, the Macedonians, Paul's traveling companions.
30 Pablo quería presentarse delante de la asamblea, pero sus discípulos se lo impidieron.	30 Paul wanted to go before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him,
31 Hasta algunos magistrados de la ciudad, que eran amigos suyos, le rogaron que no se expusiera yendo al teatro.	31 and even some of the Asiarchs who were friends of his sent word to him advising him not to venture into the theater.
32 Todo el mundo gritaba al mismo tiempo, ya que la confusión reinaba en la concurrencia, y la mayor parte ni siquiera sabía por qué se había reunido.	32 Meanwhile, some were shouting one thing, others something else; the assembly was in chaos, and most of the people had no idea why they had come together.
33 Entonces hicieron salir de entre la multitud a Alejandro, a quien los judíos empujaban hacia adelante. Este, pidiendo silencio con la mano, quería dar una explicación a la asamblea.	33 Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, as the Jews pushed him forward, and Alexander signaled with his hand that he wished to explain something to the gathering.
34 Pero en cuanto advirtieron que era un judío, todos se pusieron a gritar unánimemente durante dos horas: «¡Viva la gran Diana de los efesios!».	34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison, for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
35 Por fin, el secretario de la ciudad consiguió calmar a la multitud, diciendo: «Efesios, ¿qué hombre de este mundo ignora que la ciudad de Efeso es la guardiana del templo de la gran diosa Diana y de su estatua venida del cielo?	35 Finally the town clerk restrained the crowd and said, "You Ephesians, what person is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image that fell from the sky?
36 Siendo esta una verdad innegable, deben quedarse tranquilos y no actuar apresuradamente.	36 Since these things are undeniable, you must calm yourselves and not do anything rash.
37 Esos hombres que ustedes trajeron, no han cometido ningún sacrilegio ni han dicho ninguna blasfemia contra nuestra diosa.	37 The men you brought here are not temple robbers, nor have they insulted our goddess.
38 Y si Demetrio y sus artesanos tienen una queja contra alguien, para eso están los tribunales y los procónsules ante quienes se pueden presentar las acusaciones.	38 If Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a complaint against anyone, courts are in session, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.
39 Si ustedes tienen que debatir algún otro asunto, se decidirá en la asamblea legal.	39 If you have anything further to investigate, let the matter be settled in the lawful assembly,
40 Porque corremos el riesgo de ser acusados de sediciosos, a causa de lo que acaba de suceder, ya que no tenemos ningún motivo para justificar este tumulto». Y con estas palabras, disolvió la asamblea.	40 for, as it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of today's conduct. There is no cause for it. We shall (not) be able to give a reason for this demonstration." With these words he dismissed the assembly.
