EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Roboam llegó a Jerusalén y convocó a la casa de Judá y a Benjamín –ciento ochenta mil guerreros adiestrados– para ir a combatir contra Israel y recuperar el reino.	1 When Rehoboam reached Jerusalem, he mustered a hundred and eighty thousand picked warriors ofthe House of Judah and Benjamin to fight Israel and win back the kingdom for Rehoboam.
2 Pero la palabra del Señor llegó a Semaías, un hombre de Dios, en estos términos:	2 But the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, man of God,
3 «Di a Roboam, hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la gente de Israel que está en Judá y en Benjamín:	3 'Say this to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to al Israel in Judah and Benjamin,
4 Así habla el Señor: No suban a combatir contra sus hermanos; que cada uno vuelva a su casa, porque esto ha sucedido por disposición mía». Ellos escucharon las palabras del Señor y desistieron de su campaña contra Jeroboam.	4 "Yahweh says this: Do not go and make war on your brothers; let everyone go home, for this is mydoing." ' They obeyed Yahweh's command and went back instead of marching against Jeroboam.
5 Roboam habitó en Jerusalén y construyó ciudades fortificadas en Judá.	5 Rehoboam, residing in Jerusalem, fortified a number of towns for the defence of Judah.
6 Reconstruyó Belén, Etam, Técoa,	6 He built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,
7 Betsur, Socó, Adulam,	7 Beth-Zur, Soco, Adul am,
8 Gat, Maresá, Zif,	8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,
9 Adoraim, Laquis, Azecá,	9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,
10 Sorá, Aialón y Hebrón, ciudades fortificadas que están en Judá y en Benjamín.	10 Zorah, Aijalon, Hebron, these being the fortified towns in Judah and Benjamin.
11 El reforzó sus fortificaciones y puso en ellas comandantes y depósitos de víveres, aceite y vino.	11 He equipped these fortresses, stationing commanders in them, with supplies of food, oil and wine,
12 En cada ciudad había escudos y lanzas. El rey las hizo extremadamente fuertes, y así le estuvieron sometidos Judá y Benjamín.	12 and shields and spears in each of these towns, making them extremely strong and thus retainingcontrol of Judah and Benjamin.
13 Los sacerdotes y levitas de todo Israel acudían desde sus territorios para plegarse a Roboam.	13 The priests and the Levites from all over Israel left their districts to put themselves at his disposal.
14 En efecto, los levitas abandonaron sus campos de pastoreo y sus posesiones y se fueron a Judá y a Jerusalén, porque Jeroboam y sus hijos les impedían ejercer el sacerdocio del Señor,	14 The Levites, indeed, abandoned their pasture lands and their holdings and came to Judah andJerusalem because Jeroboam and his sons had excluded them from the priesthood of Yahweh.
15 al instituir por su cuenta sacerdotes para los lugares altos, para los sátiros y para los terneros que él había fabricado.	15 Jeroboam had appointed his own priests for the high places dedicated to the satyrs and calves whichhe had made.
16 Gente de todas las tribus de Israel, que buscaba de todo corazón al Señor, el Dios de Israel, fue detrás de ellos a Jerusalén, para ofrecer sacrificios al Señor, el Dios de sus padres.	16 And those members of al the tribes of Israel who were determined to seek Yahweh, God of Israel,fol owed those priests and Levites to Jerusalem to sacrifice to Yahweh, God of their ancestors.
17 Así fortalecieron el reino de Judá y durante tres años, consolidaron a Roboam, hijo de Salomón, ya que durante tres años se siguió el camino de David y Salomón.	17 These added strength to the kingdom of Judah and gave their support to Rehoboam son of Solomonfor three years. For three years they remained loyal to David and Solomon.
18 Roboam tomó por esposa a Majalat, hija de Ierimot, hijo de David y de Abijáil, hijo de Eliab, hijo de Jesé.	18 Rehoboam married Mahalath daughter of Jerimoth, son of David, and of Abihail daughter of Eliabson of Jesse,
19 Ella le dio varios hijos: Ieús, Semarías y Zaham.	19 and she bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah and Zaham.
20 Después tomó a Maacá, hija de Absalón, de la que le nacieron Abías, Atai, Zizá y Selomit.	20 After her, he married Maacah daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza and Shelomith.

22 Roboam puso al frente de sus hermanos a Abías, hijo de Maacá, constituyéndolo príncipe heredero, porque quería hacerlo rey.	22 Rehoboam named Abijah son of Maacah as head, hence leader, of his brothers, with a view tomaking him king,
23 Además, supo distribuir hábilmente a sus hijos por todas las regiones de Judá y de Benjamín, en todas las ciudades fortificadas, dándoles gran cantidad de víveres y procurándoles muchas mujeres.	23 and acted wisely by distributing his sons throughout the territories of Judah and Benjamin, some ineach fortified town, where he provided plenty of food for them and found them wives.
