Génesis 32

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 A la madrugada del día siguiente, Labán abrazó a sus nietos y a sus hijas, los bendijo, y regresó a su casa,	1 Early next morning, Laban kissed his grandchildren and daughters and blessed them. Then Laban leftto return home.
2 mientras que Jacob prosiguió su camino. De pronto, le salieron al paso unos ángeles de Dios.	2 While Jacob was going on his way, angels of God encountered him,
3 Al verlos, Jacob exclamó: «Este es un campamento de Dios». Por eso dio a ese lugar el nombre de Majanaim.	3 and on seeing them he said, 'This is God's camp,' and he named the place Mahanaim.
4 Después Jacob envió unos mensajeros a su hermano Esaú –que vivía en la región de Seír, en las estepas de Edom–	4 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the open country of Edom,
5 dándoles esta orden: «Digan a mi señor Esaú: Así habla tu servidor Jacob: Fui a pasar un tiempo a la casa de Labán, y me quedé allí hasta ahora.	5 with these instructions, 'Say this to my lord Esau, "Here is the message of your servant Jacob: I havebeen staying with Laban and have been delayed there until now,
6 Poseo bueyes, asnos, ovejas, esclavos y esclavas. Mando a informar de esto a mi señor, con la esperanza de que me reciba amigablemente.	6 and I own oxen, beasts of burden and flocks, and men and women slaves. I send news of this to mylord in the hope of winning your favour." '
7 Pero los mensajeros regresaron con esta noticia: «Fuimos a ver a tu hermano Esaú, y ahora viene a tu encuentro acompañado de cuatrocientos hombres».	7 The messengers returned to Jacob and told him, 'We went to your brother Esau, and he is already onhis way to meet you; there are four hundred men with him.'
8 Jacob sintió un gran temor y se llenó de angustia. Entonces dividió a la gente que lo acompañaba en dos grupos, y lo mismo hizo con las ovejas, las vacas y los camellos,	8 Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people with him, and the flocks and cattle,into two camps,
9 porque pensó: «Si Esaú acomete, contra uno de los grupos y lo destruye, el otro quedará a salvo».	9 thinking, 'If Esau comes to one of the camps and attacks it, the remaining camp may be able toescape.'
10 Después pronunció esta oración: «Dios de mi padre Abraham y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Señor, que me dijiste: «Regresa a tu tierra natal y seré bondadoso contigo»,	10 Jacob said, 'God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh who told me, "Go backto your native land and I will be good to you,"
11 yo soy indigno de las gracias con que has favorecido constantemente a tu servidor. Porque cuando crucé el Jordán, no tenía nada más que mi bastón, y ahora he podido formar dos campamentos.	11 I am unworthy of al the faithful love and constancy you have shown your servant. I had only my staffwhen I crossed this Jordan, and now I have grown into two camps.
12 Te ruego que me libres de la amenaza de mi hermano Esaú, porque tengo miedo de que él venga y nos destruya, sin perdonar a nadie.	12 I implore you, save me from my brother Esau's clutches, for I am afraid that he may come and attackme, mothers and children alike.
13 Tú mismo has afirmado: «Yo seré bondadoso contigo y haré que tu descendencia sea una multitud incontable como la arena del mar».	13 Yet it was you who said, "I shal be very good to you, and make your descendants like the sand ofthe sea, which is too numerous to count." '
14 Después de pasar la noche en aquel lugar, Jacob tomó una parte de los bienes que tenía a mano, para enviarlos como obsequio a su hermano Esaú.	14 Then Jacob passed that night there. From what he had with him he chose a gift for his brother Esau:
15 Eran doscientas cabras y veinte chivos, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,	15 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
16 treinta camellas con sus crías, cuarenta vacas y diez toros, veinte asnas y diez asnos.	16 thirty camels in milk with their calves, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male.
17 Luego confió a sus servidores cada manada por separado, y les dijo: Sigan adelante, pero dejen un espacio libre entre una manada y la otra:.	17 He put them in the charge of his servants, in separate droves, and told his servants, 'Go ahead ofme, leaving a space between each drove and the next.'
18 Y al que iba al frente le dio esta orden: «Cuando mi hermano Esaú te salga al paso y te pregunte: «¿Quién es tu patrón? ¿Adónde vas? ¿Y quién es el dueño de todo eso que está delante de ti?»,	18 He gave the leading man this order: 'When my brother Esau meets you and asks, "Whose man areyou? Where are you going? Whose are those animals that you are driving?"
19 tú le responderás: «Todo esto pertenece a tu servidor Jacob: es un regalo que él envía a mi señor Esaú. Detrás de nosotros viene él personalmente».	19 you wil answer, "Your servant Jacob's. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau. And Jacob himself isjust behind us." '
20 Jacob dio esa misma orden al segundo, y al tercero, y a todos los demás que iban detrás de las manadas diciéndoles: «Cuando se encuentren con mi hermano Esaú, díganle todo esto.	20 He gave the same order to the second and the third, and to al who were fol owing the droves. 'Thatis what you must say to Esau when you find him.
21 Y tengan cuidado de añadir: «Detrás de nosotros viene tu servidor Jacob personalmente». Porque pensaba: «Lo aplacaré con los regalos que me preceden y después me presentaré yo; tal vez así me reciba bien».	21 And you must add, "Your servant Jacob himself is just behind us." ' For he thought, 'If I conciliate him by sending a gift in advance, perhaps he will be well inclined towards me when I face him.'
22 Y aquella noche Jacob permaneció en el campamento, mientras sus regalos iban delante de él.	22 The gift went ahead of him, but he himself spent that night in the camp.
23 Aquella noche, Jacob se levantó, tomó a sus dos mujeres, a sus dos sirvientas y a sus once hijos, y cruzó el vado de Iaboc.	23 That same night he got up and, taking his two wives, his two slave-girls and his eleven children,crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
24 Después que los hizo cruzar el torrente, pasó también todas sus posesiones.	24 After he had taken them across the stream, he sent al his possessions over too.
25 Entonces se quedó solo, y un hombre luchó con él hasta rayar el alba.	25 And Jacob was left alone. Then someone wrestled with him until daybreak
26 Al ver que no podía dominar a Jacob, lo golpeó en la articulación del fémur, y el fémur de Jacob se dislocó mientras luchaban.	26 who, seeing that he could not master him, struck him on the hip socket, and Jacob's hip wasdislocated as he wrestled with him.
27 Luego dijo: «Déjame partir, porque ya está amaneciendo:. Pero Jacob replicó: «No te soltaré si antes no me bendices».	27 He said, 'Let me go, for day is breaking.' Jacob replied, 'I wil not let you go unless you bless me.'
28 El otro le preguntó: «¿Cómo te llamas?», «Jacob», respondió.	28 The other said, 'What is your name?' 'Jacob,' he replied.
29 El añadió: «En adelante no te llamarás Jacob, sino Israel, porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido».	29 He said, 'No longer are you to be cal ed Jacob, but Israel since you have shown your strengthagainst God and men and have prevailed.'
30 Jacob le rogó: «Por favor, dime tu nombre». Pero él respondió: «¿Cómo te atreves a preguntar mi nombre?». Y allí mismo lo bendijo.	30 Then Jacob asked, 'Please tel me your name.' He replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' With that, heblessed him there.
31 Jacob llamó a aquel lugar con el nombre de Peniel, porque dijo: «He visto a Dios cara a cara, y he salido con vida».	31 Jacob named the place Peniel, 'Because I have seen God face to face,' he said, 'and have survived.'
32 Mientras atravesaba Peniel, el sol comenzó a brillar, y Jacob iba rengueando del muslo.	32 The sun rose as he passed Peniel, limping from his hip.
33 Por eso los israelitas no comen hasta el presente el nervio ciático que está en la articulación del fémur, porque Jacob fue tocado en la articulación del fémur, en el nervio ciático.	33 That is why to this day the Israelites do not eat the thigh sinew which is at the hip socket: because hehad struck Jacob at the hip socket on the thigh sinew.
