BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Mejor es carencia de hijos acompañada de virtud, pues hay inmortalidad en su recuerdo, porque es conocida por Dios y por los hombres;	1 Better to have no children yet to have virtue, since immortality perpetuates its memory; for God andhuman beings both recognise it.
2 presente, la imitan, ausente, la añoran; en la eternidad, ceñida de una corona, celebra su triunfo porque venció en la lucha por premios incorruptibles.	2 Present, we imitate it, absent, we long for it; crowned, it holds triumph through eternity, having strivenfor untainted prizes and emerged the victor.
3 En cambio, la numerosa prole de los impíos será inútil; viniendo de renuevos bastardos, no echará raíces profundas ni se asentará sobre fundamento sólido.	3 But the offspring of the godless come to nothing, however prolific, sprung from a bastard stock, they willnever strike deep roots, never put down firm foundations.
4 Aunque despliegue por su tiempo su ramaje, precariamente arraigada, será sacudida por el viento, arrancada de raíz por la furia del vendaval;	4 They may branch out for a time, but, on unsteady foundations, they will be rocked by the wind anduprooted by the force of the storm;
5 se quebrarán sus ramas todavía tiernas, inútiles serán sus frutos, sin sazón para comerlos, para nada servirán.	5 their branches, yet unformed, wil be snapped off, their fruit be useless, too unripe to eat, fit for nothing.
6 Que los hijos nacidos de sueños culpables son testigos, en su examen, de la maldad de los padres.	6 For children begotten of unlawful bed witness, when put on trial, to their parents' wickedness.
7 El justo, aunque muera prematuramente, halla el descanso.	7 The upright, though he die before his time, will find rest.
8 La ancianidad venerable no es la de los muchos días ni se mide por el número de años;	8 Length of days is not what makes age honourable, nor number of years the true measure of life;
9 la verdadera canicie para el hombre es la prudencia, y la edad provecta, una vida inmaculada.	9 understanding, this is grey hairs, untarnished life, this is ripe old age.
10 Agradó a Dios y fue amado, y como vivía entre pecadores, fue trasladado.	10 Having won God's favour, he has been loved and, as he was living among sinners, has been takenaway.
11 Fue arrebatado para que la maldad no pervitiera su inteligencia o el engaño sedujera su alma;	11 He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding or deceitfulness seduce his soul;
12 pues la fascinación del mal empaña el bien y los vaivenes de la concupiscencia corrompen el espíritu ingenuo.	12 for the fascination of evil throws good things into the shade, and the whirlwind of desire corrupts asimple heart.
13 Alcanzando en breve la perfección, llenó largos años.	13 Having come to perfection so soon, he has lived long;
14 Su alma era del agrado del Señor, por eso se apresuró a sacarle de entre la maldad. Lo ven las gentes y no comprenden, ni caen en cuenta	14 his soul being pleasing to the Lord, he has hurried away from the wickedness around him. Yet peoplelook on, uncomprehending; and it does not enter their heads
15 que la gracia y la misericordia son para sus elegidos y su visita para sus santos.	15 that grace and mercy await his chosen ones and that he intervenes on behalf of his holy ones.
16 El justo muerto condena a los impíos vivos, y la juventud pronto consumada, la larga ancianidad del inicuo.	16 The upright who dies condemns the godless who survive, and youth quickly perfected condemns thelengthy old age of the wicked.
17 Ven la muerte del sabio, mas no comprenden los planes del Señor sobre él ni por qué le ha puesto en seguridad;	17 These people see the end of the wise without understanding what the Lord has in store or why he hastaken such a one to safety;
18 lo ven y lo desprecian, pero el Señor se reirá de ellos.	18 they look on and sneer, but the Lord wil laugh at them.
19 Después serán cadáveres despreciables, objeto de ultraje entre los muertos para siempre. Porque el Señor los quebrará lanzándolos de cabeza, sin habla, los sacudirá de sus cimientos; quedarán totalmentes asolados, sumidos en el dolor, y su recuerdo se perderá.	19 Soon they wil be corpses without honour, objects of horror among the dead for ever. For he wilshatter them and fling them headlong and dumbfounded. He wil shake them from their foundations; they wil beutterly laid waste, a prey to grief, and their memory wil perish.
20 Al tiempo de dar cuenta de sus pecados irán acobardados, y sus iniquidades se les enfrentarán acusándoles.	20 When the count of their sins has been drawn up, in terror they wil come, and their crimes, confrontingthem, wil accuse them.
