1 Entonces le enviaron mensajeros para decirle en son de paz:	1 They therefore sent messengers to him to sue for peace in these words:
2 «Nosotros, siervos del gran rey Nabucodonosor, nos postramos ante ti. Trátanos como mejor te parezca.	2 "We, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar the great king, lie prostrate before you; do with us as you will.
3 Nuestras granjas y todo nuestro territorio, nuestros campos de trigo, los rebaños de ovejas y bueyes, todas las majadas de nuestros campamentos, están a tu disposición. Haz con ellos lo que quieras.	3 Our dwellings and all our wheat fields, our flocks and herds, and all our encampments are at your disposal; make use of them as you please.
4 También nuestras ciudades y los que las habitan son siervos tuyos. Ven, dirígete a ellas y haz lo que te parezca bien».	4 Our cities and their inhabitants are also at your service; come and deal with them as you see fit."
5 Los enviados se presentaron ante Holofernes y le comunicaron estas palabras.	5 After the spokesmen had reached Holofernes and given him this message,
6 Entonces él bajó con todo su ejército al litoral, puso guarniciones en las ciudades altas, y les tomó los mejores hombres en calidad de tropas auxiliares.	6 he went down with his army to the seacoast, and stationed garrisons in the fortified cities; from them he impressed picked troops as auxiliaries.
7 Los habitantes de las ciudades y todos los de los contornos salieron a recibirle con coronas y danzando al son de tambores.	7 The people of these cities and all the inhabitants of the countryside received him with garlands and dancing to the sound of timbrels.
8 El saqueó sus santuarios y taló sus bosques sagrados, pues había recibido la orden de destruir todas las divinidades del país para que todas las gentes adorasen únicamente a Nabucodonosor y todas las lenguas y todas las tribus le proclamasen dios.	8 Nevertheless, he devastated their whole territory and cut down their sacred groves, for he had been commissioned to destroy all the gods of the earth, so that every nation might worship Nebuchadnezzar alone, and every people and tribe invoke him as a god.
9 Llegó después frente a Esdrelón, junto a Dotán, que está ante la gran sierra montañosa de Judea,	9 At length Holofernes reached Esdraelon in the neighborhood of Dothan, the approach to the main ridge of the Judean mountains;
10 acamparon entre Gueba y Escitópolis y se detuvo allí un mes, haciendo acopio de provisiones para su ejército.	10 he set up his camp between Geba and Scythopolis, and stayed there a whole month to refurbish all the equipment of his army.
