1 “Frères et pères, écoutez un peu, laissez-moi m’expliquer.”	1 'My brothers, my fathers, listen to what I have to say to you in my defence.'
2 Quand ils ont vu qu’il leur parlait en hébreu, ils se sont tenus plus tranquilles.	2 When they realised he was speaking in Hebrew, the silence was even greater than before.
3 Il a alors continué: "Je suis né Juif, je suis de Tarse en Cilicie mais j’ai été éduqué ici dans cette ville. Avec Gamaliel comme maître, j’ai été instruit de la Loi de nos pères de la façon la plus correcte et j’étais fanatique pour Dieu comme vous l’êtes tous aujourd’hui.	3 'I am a Jew', Paul said, 'and was born at Tarsus in Cilicia. I was brought up here in this city. It wasunder Gamaliel that I studied and was taught the exact observance of the Law of our ancestors. In fact, I was asful of duty towards God as you al are today.
4 “J’ai donc poursuivi à mort ce Chemin: je faisais arrêter et mettre en prison les femmes comme les hommes.	4 I even persecuted this Way to the death and sent women as wel as men to prison in chains
5 Le grand prêtre et tout le conseil des Anciens peuvent le dire: avec des lettres de pouvoir qu’ils m’ont données, je suis parti chez nos frères de Damas. Je devais faire arrêter ceux du Chemin qui s’y trouvaient et les ramener à Jérusalem pour y recevoir leur condamnation.	5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify. I even received letters from them to thebrothers in Damascus, which I took with me when I set off to bring prisoners back from there to Jerusalem forpunishment.
6 “J’étais sur la route et déjà proche de Damas quand, aux environs de midi, tout d’un coup il y a eu comme un éclair, une lumière qui du ciel se projetait sur moi.	6 'It happened that I was on that journey and nearly at Damascus when in the middle of the day a brightlight from heaven suddenly shone round me.
7 Je suis tombé à terre et j’ai entendu une voix qui me disait: ‘Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?’	7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"
8 “J’ai répondu: ‘Qui es-tu, Seigneur?’ et lui m’a dit: ‘Je suis Jésus de Nazareth que tu persécutes.’	8 I answered, "Who are you, Lord?" and he said to me, "I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you arepersecuting."
9 “Ceux qui m’accompagnaient avaient vu la lumière, mais ils n’entendaient pas celui qui me parlait.	9 The people with me saw the light but did not hear the voice which spoke to me.
10 Alors j’ai dit: ‘Seigneur, que dois-je faire?’ Le Seigneur m’a répondu: ‘Relève-toi, va à Damas et là on te dira ce que tu dois faire, comme c’est déjà prévu pour toi.’	10 I said, "What am I to do, Lord?" The Lord answered, "Get up and go into Damascus, and there youwil be told what you have been appointed to do."
11 “La lumière avait été telle que je restais sans voir; mes compagnons m’ont donc pris par la main jusqu’à l’arrivée à Damas.	11 Since the light had been so dazzling that I was blind, I got to Damascus only because my companionsled me by the hand.
12 Il y avait là un certain Ananias, un homme très observant de la Loi: tous les Juifs installés là-bas en disent du bien.	12 'Someone called Ananias, a devout fol ower of the Law and highly thought of by al the Jews livingthere,
13 Il est venu me trouver et il m’a dit: ‘Frère Saul, recouvre la vue!’ Au même moment j’ai pu voir.	13 came to see me; he stood beside me and said, "Brother Saul, receive your sight." Instantly my sightcame back and I was able to see him.
14 Il m’a dit alors: ‘Le Dieu de nos pères t’a choisi d’avance pour connaître ses desseins, pour voir le Juste et entendre sa propre voix.	14 Then he said, "The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will, to see the Upright One andhear his own voice speaking,
15 Avec tout ce que tu as vu et entendu, tu lui rendras témoignage devant les personnes les plus diverses.	15 because you are to be his witness before all humanity, testifying to what you have seen and heard.
16 Que te reste-t-il à faire? Reçois le baptême et invoque son Nom: ainsi tu seras lavé de tes péchés.’	16 And now why delay? Hurry and be baptised and wash away your sins, cal ing on his name."
17 “Après mon retour à Jérusalem, un jour où je priais au Temple, j’ai eu une extase.	17 'It happened that, when I got back to Jerusalem, and was praying in the Temple, I fell into a trance
18 Je l’ai vu qui me disait: ‘N’attends pas davantage, sors au plus tôt de Jérusalem, car ils ne feront aucun cas de ton témoignage à mon sujet.’	18 and then I saw him. "Hurry," he said, "leave Jerusalem at once; they wil not accept the testimony you are giving about me."
19 “J’ai répondu: ‘Seigneur, ils savent bien que j’emprisonnais ceux qui croient en toi et que je les faisais flageller dans les synagogues.	19 "Lord," I answered, "they know that I used to go from synagogue to synagogue, imprisoning andflogging those who believed in you;
20 Et quand on a versé le sang d’Étienne, ton martyr, j’étais présent et j’étais d’accord. Même je gardais les vêtements de ceux qui le mettaient à mort.’	20 and that when the blood of your witness Stephen was being shed, I, too, was standing by, in fullagreement with his murderers, and in charge of their clothes."
21 Mais le Seigneur m’a dit: ‘Pars, je t’envoie au loin, vers les païens!’… ”	21 Then he said to me, "Go! I am sending you out to the gentiles far away." '
22 Jusqu’à cette dernière phrase on avait écouté Paul. Mais alors ils se mirent à crier: "Débarrassez le monde de cet individu, il n’a pas le droit de vivre!”	22 So far they had listened to him, but at these words they began to shout, 'Rid the earth of the man! Heis not fit to live!'
23 Ils criaient, ils déchiraient leurs vêtements et soulevaient des nuages de poussière.	23 They were yel ing, waving their cloaks and throwing dust into the air,
24 Le commandant ordonna de faire passer Paul dans la forteresse, puis il demanda de le flageller jusqu’à ce qu’on sache pourquoi on criait tellement contre lui.	24 and so the tribune had him brought into the fortress and ordered him to be examined under the lash,to find out the reason for the outcry against him.
25 Mais quand on voulut lui enlever ses vêtements, Paul dit au centurion: "Avez-vous le droit de flageller un citoyen romain tant qu’il n’a pas été jugé?”	25 But when they had strapped him down Paul said to the centurion on duty, 'Is it legal for you to flog aman who is a Roman citizen and has not been brought to trial?'
26 Le centurion alla aussitôt trouver le commandant pour lui dire: "Il est romain, qu’est-ce que tu veux faire?”	26 When he heard this the centurion went and told the tribune; 'Do you realise what you are doing?' hesaid. 'This man is a Roman citizen.'
27 Le commandant s’approcha de Paul: "Dis-moi: tu es citoyen romain?” Paul répondit: "Oui.”	27 So the tribune came and asked him, 'Tel me, are you a Roman citizen?' Paul answered 'Yes'.
28 Le commandant fit cette réflexion: "J’ai dû payer cher pour acheter ce titre.” Paul lui dit: "Moi, je le suis de naissance.”	28 To this the tribune replied, 'It cost me a large sum to acquire this citizenship.' 'But I was born to it,'said Paul.
29 Aussitôt se retirèrent les soldats qui devaient faire avouer Paul, et le commandant eut peur en pensant qu’il avait passé des chaînes à un citoyen romain.	29 Then those who were about to examine him hurriedly withdrew, and the tribune himself was alarmedwhen he realised that he had put a Roman citizen in chains.
30 Le lendemain il fit délier Paul. Il voulait savoir avec certitude de quoi les Juifs l’accusaient. Il demanda aux grands prêtres de se réunir avec tout le Sanhédrin, et il fit descendre Paul pour qu’il s’explique devant eux.	30 The next day, since he wanted to know for sure what charge the Jews were bringing, he freed Pauland gave orders for a meeting of the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin; then he brought Paul down and sethim in front of them.
