1 Après avoir traversé Amphipolis et Apollonie, ils arrivèrent à Thessalonique où les Juifs avaient une synagogue.	1 Now when they had walked through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they arrived at Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
2 Paul entra chez eux comme il en avait l’habitude. Trois sabbats de suite il discuta avec eux à partir des Écritures.	2 Then Paul, according to custom, entered to them. And for three Sabbaths he disputed with them about the Scriptures,
3 Il les interprétait, montrant que le Messie devait souffrir et ressusciter des morts. Et il ajoutait: "Ce Messie, c’est précisément Jésus que je vous annonce.”	3 interpreting and concluding that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise again from the dead, and that “this is the Jesus Christ, whom I am announcing to you.”
4 Quelques-uns d’entre eux se laissèrent convaincre et formèrent un groupe autour de Paul avec pas mal d’adorateurs de Dieu et un petit nombre de femmes de notables.	4 And some of them believed and were joined to Paul and Silas, and a great number of these were from the worshipers and the Gentiles, and not a few were noble women.
5 Les Juifs voulurent réagir. Ils firent appel à des mauvais garçons, des traîneurs de rues, et ils ameutèrent la population de façon à créer le désordre dans la ville. Ils firent une démonstration devant chez Jason, car ils voulaient les conduire au tribunal du peuple.	5 But the Jews, being jealous, and joining with certain evildoers among the common men, caused a disturbance, and they stirred up the city. And taking up a position near the house of Jason, they sought to lead them out to the people.
6 Comme ils ne les trouvèrent pas, ils entraînèrent de force Jason et quelques frères jusque devant les magistrats de la ville. Ils criaient: "Ceux qui mettent le désordre par toute la terre sont arrivés ici,	6 And when they had not found them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers to the rulers of the city, crying out: “For these are the ones who have stirred up the city. And they came here,
7 et Jason les a accueillis. Tous ces gens-là attaquent les décrets de l’empereur, ils prétendent qu’il y a un autre roi qui est Jésus!”	7 and Jason has received them. And all these men act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”
8 Ils créèrent la confusion dans la foule et chez les magistrats qui les entendaient;	8 And they incited the people. And the rulers of the city, upon hearing these things,
9 ceux-ci exigèrent une caution de Jason et des autres avant de les renvoyer.	9 and having received an explanation from Jason and the others, released them.
10 Cette nuit même les frères mirent Paul et Silas sur le chemin de Bérée. Arrivés là, ils allèrent à la synagogue des Juifs.	10 Yet truly, the brothers promptly sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. And when they had arrived, they entered the synagogue of the Jews.
11 Ceux-ci avaient l’âme plus noble que ceux de Thessalonique. Ils accueillirent la Parole avec beaucoup de bonne volonté, et chaque jour ils vérifiaient dans les Écritures si les choses étaient bien ainsi.	11 But these were more noble than those who were at Thessalonica. They received the Word with all enthusiasm, daily examining the Scriptures to see if these things were so.
12 Un bon nombre d’entre eux arriva à la foi, ainsi que des Grecs: des femmes de personnages importants et un petit groupe d’hommes.	12 And indeed, many believed among them, as well as not a few among the honorable Gentile men and women.
13 Mais voici que les Juifs de Thessalonique apprennent la nouvelle: Paul annonce à Bérée la parole de Dieu! Ils accourent et commencent à faire du tapage et à ameuter la foule.	13 Then, when the Jews of Thessalonica had realized that the Word of God was also preached by Paul at Beroea, they went there also, stirring up and disturbing the multitude.
14 Immédiatement les frères font partir Paul jusqu’à la mer par la route, tandis que Silas et Timothée restent sur place.	14 And then the brothers quickly sent Paul away, so that he might travel by sea. But Silas and Timothy remained there.
15 Ceux qui escortent Paul le conduisent à Athènes, puis ils reviennent avec un message pour Silas et Timothée de venir le rejoindre au plus vite.	15 Then those who were leading Paul brought him as far as Athens. And having received an order from him to Silas and Timothy, that they should come to him quickly, they set out.
16 Paul les attendait à Athènes et son esprit ne tenait pas en place en voyant cette ville pleine d’idoles.	16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred up within him, seeing the city given over to idolatry.
17 Il commença à converser dans la synagogue avec des Juifs et des adorateurs de Dieu; il conversait aussi tous les jours sur la place avec ceux qui se présentaient.	17 And so, he was disputing with the Jews in the synagogue, and with the worshipers, and in public places, throughout each day, with whomever was there.
18 Quelques philosophes épicuriens et stoïciens acceptaient le dialogue, d’autres disaient: "Que cherche ce grand parleur?”, ou encore: "Ce doit être un prédicateur de divinités étrangères.” Tout cela parce que Paul parlait de Jésus et de la Résurrection.	18 Now certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were arguing with him. And some were saying, “What does this sower of the Word want to say?” Yet others were saying, “He seems to be an announcer for new demons.” For he was announcing to them Jesus and the Resurrection.
19 Alors ils le conduisent avec eux à l’Aréopage et lui posent la question: "Pouvons-nous connaître cette doctrine nouvelle que tu prêches?	19 And apprehending him, they brought him to the Areopagus, saying: “Are we able to know what this new doctrine is, about which you speak?
20 Tu nous lances aux oreilles des choses bien étranges et nous aimerions savoir à quoi rime tout cela.”	20 For you bring certain new ideas to our ears. And so we would like to know what these things mean.”
21 Il faut dire que les Athéniens et les étrangers qui sont là de passage n’ont pas de plus grand plaisir que de dire ou d’entendre la dernière nouveauté.	21 (Now all the Athenians, and arriving visitors, were occupying themselves with nothing other than speaking or hearing various new ideas.)
22 Paul prend donc la parole au milieu de l’Aréopage et commence à leur dire: "Athéniens, j’admire jusqu’où va votre sens religieux.	22 But Paul, standing in the middle of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are rather superstitious.
23 Je me promenais, je regardais vos monuments sacrés, et je découvre un autel avec cette inscription: ‘Au Dieu inconnu’. Or je viens précisément vous annoncer ce que vous vénérez sans le connaître.	23 For as I was passing by and noticing your idols, I also found an altar, on which was written: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this is what I am preaching to you:
24 “Le Dieu qui a fait l’univers avec tout ce qui s’y trouve ne réside pas dans des temples de notre fabrication, puisqu’il est Seigneur du ciel et de la terre.	24 the God who made the world and all that is in it, the One who is the Lord of heaven and earth, who does not live in temples made with hands.
25 Il n’a que faire de mains humaines pour le servir: de quoi a-t-il besoin, lui qui donne à tous la vie, le souffle, et tout le reste?	25 Neither is he served by the hands of men, as if in need of anything, since it is he who gives to all things life and breath and all else.
26 “Il avait tiré d’un même sang toute le genre humain; il a voulu qu’il occupe toute la face de la terre, puis il a fixé pour chaque peuple un territoire déterminé et un temps de l’histoire.	26 And he has made, out of one, every family of man: to live upon the face of the entire earth, determining the appointed seasons and the limits of their habitation,
27 Il leur fallait chercher l’être divin: peut-être trouveraient-ils à force de tâtonnements. “Car de fait il n’est pas loin de nous,	27 so as to seek God, if perhaps they may consider him or find him, though he is not far from each one of us.
28 c’est en lui que nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l’être, comme l’ont dit quelques-uns de vos poètes: Nous sommes aussi de sa race.	28 ‘For in him we live, and move, and exist.’ Just as some of your own poets have said. ‘For we are also of his family.’
29 Mais si nous sommes, nous, de la race de Dieu, n’allons pas croire que l’être divin ressemble aux créations de l’art et de la fantaisie humaine, qu’elles soient de pierre ou d’or ou d’argent.	29 Therefore, since we are of the family of God, we must not consider gold or silver or precious stones, or the engravings of art and of the imagination of man, to be a representation of what is Divine.
30 “Justement, Dieu veut maintenant dépasser les temps de l’ignorance et il demande que tous les hommes en tous lieux se reprennent totalement.	30 And indeed, God, having looked down to see the ignorance of these times, has now announced to men that everyone everywhere should do penance.
31 Il a fixé une date où il jugera selon la justice toute la terre habitée; pour cela il aura recours à un homme choisi par lui, que tous reconnaîtront de façon sûre, car il l’a ressuscité des morts.”	31 For he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in equity, through the man whom he has appointed, offering faith to all, by raising him from the dead.”
32 En entendant parler de résurrection des morts, un certain nombre commencèrent à se moquer de lui. Les autres lui dirent: "Pour cela nous t’écouterons une autre fois.”	32 And when they had heard about the Resurrection of the dead, indeed, some were derisive, while others said, “We will listen to you about this again.”
33 C’est ainsi que Paul quitta l’endroit.	33 So Paul departed from their midst.
34 Quelques hommes s’attachèrent à lui et crurent: parmi eux, Denys, qui était de l’Aréopage, ainsi qu’une femme du nom de Damaris, et quelques autres.	34 Yet truly, certain men, adhering to him, did believe. Among these were also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
