1 À la suite de cela, Moïse et Aaron allèrent dire au Pharaon: “Voici une parole de Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: Laisse partir mon peuple pour qu’il me célèbre une fête dans le désert.”	1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.
2 Pharaon répondit: “Qui est Yahvé, pour que j’écoute sa parole et que je laisse partir Israël? Je ne connais pas Yahvé et je ne laisserai pas partir Israël!”	2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.
3 Ils dirent: “Le Dieu des Hébreux s’est présenté devant nous. Laisse-nous donc partir à trois jours de marche dans le désert, pour offrir un sacrifice à Yahvé notre Dieu. Autrement, il pourrait nous frapper par la peste ou par l’épée.”	3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.
4 Le roi d’Égypte leur dit: “Moïse et Aaron, pourquoi détournez-vous le peuple de son travail? Retournez sur vos chantiers!”	4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens.
5 Le Pharaon ajouta: “Ils sont maintenant plus nombreux que le peuple du pays, et vous voudriez qu’ils arrêtent leur travail?”	5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.
6 Le jour même, Pharaon donna des ordres aux inspecteurs du peuple et aux surveillants:	6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,
7 “Vous ne leur donnerez plus de paille pour fabriquer les briques, comme vous le faisiez jusqu’ici. Ils iront eux-mêmes ramasser la paille.	7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.
8 Cependant vous exigerez d’eux la même quantité de briques que dans le passé, vous ne la réduirez pas. Ce sont des paresseux! C’est pour cela qu’ils viennent me crier: Laisse-nous aller pour offrir un sacrifice à notre Dieu!	8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.
9 Faites-les travailler davantage et ils ne se laisseront plus tourner la tête avec toutes ces bêtises.”	9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.
10 Les inspecteurs du peuple et les surveillants vinrent donc dire au peuple: “Voici ce qu’a dit le Pharaon: On ne vous donnera plus de paille,	10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.
11 vous irez la chercher vous-mêmes là où vous en trouverez. Mais on ne vous diminuera pas la tâche!”	11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished.
12 Le peuple se dispersa dans toute l’Égypte pour ramasser de la paille et la broyer.	12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.
13 Les surveillants étaient sur eux et leur disaient: “Terminez votre travail! Vous devez faire chaque jour la quantité prévue, comme quand il y avait de la paille!”	13 And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.
14 Les surveillants des Israélites, ceux qui avaient été mis à leur tête par les inspecteurs du Pharaon, reçurent des coups. On leur disait: “Pourquoi n’a-t-on pas fait hier et aujourd’hui la même quantité de briques qu’auparavant?”	14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?
15 Les surveillants des Israélites vinrent se plaindre auprès du Pharaon: “Pourquoi traites-tu ainsi tes serviteurs?	15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?
16 On ne donne plus de paille à tes serviteurs, et on leur dit: Faites des briques quand même! Et maintenant, on frappe tes serviteurs… ton peuple est réellement en faute!”	16 There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people.
17 Le Pharaon répondit: “Vous êtes des paresseux, oui, des paresseux! Voilà pourquoi vous dites: Laisse-nous offrir un sacrifice à Yahvé!	17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD.
18 Maintenant donc, retournez au travail, on ne vous donnera pas de paille et vous fournirez la même quantité de briques qu’avant.”	18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks.
19 Alors les surveillants se retournèrent contre les Israélites: “On ne diminuera pas le nombre des briques, vous ferez chaque jour la quantité fixée.”	19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.
20 Comme ils sortaient de la maison du Pharaon, ils rencontrèrent Moïse et Aaron qui les attendaient.	20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:
21 Ils leur dirent: “Que Yahvé voie, et qu’il juge! À cause de vous le Pharaon et ses serviteurs ne peuvent plus nous sentir. Vous avez mis dans leurs mains l’épée pour nous tuer.”	21 And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.
22 Alors Moïse se tourna vers Yahvé et lui dit: “Mon Seigneur, pourquoi as-tu fait du mal à ce peuple? Pourquoi m’as-tu envoyé?	22 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?
23 Depuis le jour où je suis venu trouver le Pharaon pour lui parler en ton nom, il n’a cessé de maltraiter ce peuple et tu n’as rien fait pour le délivrer!”	23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.
