| 1 Non increpare (e non garrire) all' uomo massaio, ma priegalo si come padre, e li giovani come fratelli; | 1 Do not rebuke an older man but exhort him as you would a father; treat younger men like brothers, |
| 2 le vecchie come madri, e le giovani come sorelle, in tutta castità. | 2 older women like mothers, younger women like sisters, in all purity. |
| 3 Alle vedove fa onore, (quelle) che son veraci vedove. | 3 Honor widows who are real widows. |
| 4 E se alcuna vedova ha figliuoli o nepoti, impari (e imprenda) in prima a reggere la sua casa, e renda vicenda al padre e alla madre (facendo quello alli suoi figliuoli, che fu fatto a lei quando era piccola); e questo è piacevole dinanzi a Dio. | 4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn their religious duty to their own family and make some return to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God. |
| 5 Ma quella ch' è vera vedova e abbandonata, abbia speranza nel Signore, e stia in prego e in orazione il dì e la notte. | 5 She who is a real widow, and is left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day; |
| 6 Chè certo quella vedova che sta in delicatezze (e in grande ricchezze) è morta. | 6 whereas she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives. |
| 7 E a queste comanda, che si portino in tal guisa che non siin degne di essere riprese. | 7 Command this, so that they may be without reproach. |
| 8 Se alcuna persona è, che non abbia cura dei suoi, e massimamente [delli] domestici, a questa tale è negata la fede, ed è peggio che l'infedele. | 8 If any one does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own family, he has disowned the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. |
| 9 La vedova non sia ordinata (in signoria e) nel servizio in meno di sessant' anni, la qual abbia avuto pur uno marito, | 9 Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband; |
| 10 e che abbia nominanza di buone opere, cioè se ella nutritte figliuoli, se ella ricevette (li poveri) ad albergo, se ella lavò li piedi alli santi, se ella si diede studio a fare ogni bona opera. | 10 and she must be well attested for her good deeds, as one who has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the feet of the saints, relieved the afflicted, and devoted herself to doing good in every way. |
| 11 Le più giovani vedove schivale (ed evitale); imperò che quando elle hanno (compiute loro volontà e hanno) lussuriato, poi si vogliono maritare in Cristo, | 11 But refuse to enrol younger widows; for when they grow wanton against Christ they desire to marry, |
| 12 abiendo dannazione; imperò che fecero vana la primaria fede (e ruppero, ch' aveano impromessa). | 12 and so they incur condemnation for having violated their first pledge. |
| 13 Simigliantemente evita quelle che son oziose, le quali vanno attorno cercando le case; e non solamente son oziose, ma eziandio son piene di parole, e son vane, parlando quelle cose che non si convengono. | 13 Besides that, they learn to be idlers, gadding about from house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not. |
| 14 Adunque voglio che le più giovani si maritino, e menino figliuoli, e siano madri della famiglia, e che (non abbiano cagione di mal fare, e perchè) non diano all'avversario cagione di mal detto. | 14 So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, rule their households, and give the enemy no occasion to revile us. |
| 15 E già alquante ne sono ritornate (adietro, e vanno) dopo Satana. | 15 For some have already strayed after Satan. |
| 16 Adunque se alcuno de' fedeli ha le vedove (in casa), dia a loro quel ch' è a loro bisogno, chè non abbiano gravezza gli altri fedeli, acciò che quelle che son veraci vedove possano avere quello che loro necessita. | 16 If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her assist them; let the church not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are real widows. |
| 17 Quelli preti li quali soprastanno bene a quelle cose che debbono fare, son degni di avere doppio onore; e specialmente quelli che lavorano nella predicazione e nella dottrina (di Dio). | 17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching; |
| 18 Chè la scrittura dice: NON LEGARE LA BOCCA DEL BOVE CHE LAVORA, e: DEGNO È IL LAVORATORE DEL SUO GUIDERDONE. | 18 for the scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain," and, "The laborer deserves his wages." |
| 19 Incontro al prete non riceverai accusa non sotto due ovver tre testimonii. | 19 Never admit any charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. |
| 20 Quelli che peccano davanti a tutti, riprendigli in tal guisa che gli altri abbiano timore. | 20 As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear. |
| 21 Io testimonio dinanzi a Dio, e a Iesù Cristo, e dinanzi li suoi eletti angeli, che tu tenghi ferme queste cose, e non facci niuna cosa (senza provvedimento) in altra parte declinando. | 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without favor, doing nothing from partiality. |
| 22 Le tue mani [non] ponere in capo [ad alcuno] così presto, e non ti accompagnare alli altrui peccati; ma guarda te medesimo (e dimora) in castità. | 22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor participate in another man's sins; keep yourself pure. |
| 23 Non bere ancora acqua, ma usa un poco di vino, per il stomaco tuo e per le tue spesse infermità. | 23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. |
| 24 (Che) le peccata d'alquanti son manifeste, sì che vanno inanzi al giudizio; e quelle [di] alquanti vanno da poscia. | 24 The sins of some men are conspicuous, pointing to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. |
| 25 Simigliautemente li buoni fatti son manifesti; e quelli che altramente sono, non si possono nascondere. | 25 So also good deeds are conspicuous; and even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden. |
