1 E dopo quattordici anni, ancora andai in Ierusalem con Barnaba, accompagnato con Tito.	1 It was not until fourteen years had gone by that I travel ed up to Jerusalem again, with Barnabas, and Itook Titus with me too.
2 Ma io andai per superna revelazione; e conferii l'evangelio con quelli, il quale prèdico alle genti, ma da parte da quelli che fossero da qual cosa, acciò che forse io non corressi ovver avessi corso in vano.	2 My journey was inspired by a revelation and there, in a private session with the recognised leaders, Iexpounded the whole gospel that I preach to the gentiles, to make quite sure that the efforts I was making andhad already made should not be fruitless.
3 Ma nè etiam Tito, il quale era meco, essendo lui gentile, fu constretto di essere circonciso.	3 Even then, and although Titus, a Greek, was with me, there was no demand that he should becircumcised;
4 E questo fece solamente a cagione de' falsi fratelli introdotti, li quali sotto entrarono a ispiare la nostra (franchezza e la nostra) libertà la quale avemo in Iesù Cristo, perchè reducessero noi in servitù.	4 but because of some false brothers who had secretly insinuated themselves to spy on the freedom thatwe have in Christ Jesus, intending to reduce us to slavery-
5 Alli quali una ora non concedemmo di volerci sottomettere, acciò che la verità dell' evangelio permanga sempre appresso di voi.	5 people we did not defer to for one moment, or the truth of the gospel preached to you might have beencompromised. . .
6 Ma (non mi appartiene cosa alcuna) di quelli che parevano essere qualche cosa; ed io non curo quali egli fossero in qua dietro (come altre volte furono); Dio non fa sceglimento di persone; quelli che parevano essere qualche cosa, niente mi hanno dato.	6 but those who were recognised as important people -- whether they actual y were important or not:There is no favouritism with God -those recognised leaders, I am saying, had nothing to add to my message.
7 Ma per contrario, poi ch' egli ebbeno veduto che la predicazione del prepuzio era data a me, come a Pietro quella della circoncisione;	7 On the contrary, once they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been entrusted to me, just asto Peter the gospel for the circumcised
8 e quello che adoperato ha [in] Pietro l' apostolato della circoncisione, ha adoperato in me infra le genti;	8 (for he who empowered Peter's apostolate to the circumcision also empowered mine to the gentiles),
9 e poi che ebbeno conosciuto la grazia, la qual era data a me, Iacobo e Pietro e Ioanni, li quali pare che fossero colonne (e reggitori), sì diedero a me la destra e a Barnaba [di] compagnia, che noi predicassimo intra la gente, ed egli predicavano intra coloro ch' erano circoncisi.	9 and when they acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, then James and Cephas and John,who were the ones recognised as pil ars, offered their right hands to Barnabas and to me as a sign ofpartnership: we were to go to the gentiles and they to the circumcised.
10 Ma solamente questo c' imposero (e di questo ci pregarono), che noi fossimo ricordevoli de' poveri; la qual cosa sollicitamente faccio.	10 They asked nothing more than that we should remember to help the poor, as indeed I was anxious todo in any case.
11 Ma venuto Pietro in Antiochia, gli ho contrastato nella faccia, imperò ch' egli era degno d'essere ripreso.	11 However, when Cephas came to Antioch, then I did oppose him to his face since he was manifestly inthe wrong.
12 Inanzi che venissero alquanti da Iacobo, manducava con le genti; e dopo che quelli furono venuti (a Iacobo di Ierusalem) si separava, temendo quelli ch' erano della circoncisione.	12 Before certain people from James came, he used to eat with gentiles; but as soon as these came, hebacked out and kept apart from them, out of fear of the circumcised.
13 E gli altri iudei consentirono alla sua simulazione, sì che Barnaba fosse menato da quelli in quella simulazione.	13 And the rest of the Jews put on the same act as he did, so that even Barnabas was carried away bytheir insincerity.
14 Ma io, vedendo che non andavano puramente secondo la verità dell' evangelio, sì dissi a Pietro dinanzi a tutti: conciosia cosa che tu sei iudeo, e non vivi secondo iudeo, anzi secondo gli altri gentili, come costringi li gentili, che vivano secondo li iudei?	14 When I saw, though, that their behaviour was not true to the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of al ofthem, 'Since you, though you are a Jew, live like the gentiles and not like the Jews, how can you compel thegentiles to live like the Jews?'
15 Noi siamo per natura iudei, e non delle genti peccatori.	15 We who were born Jews and not gentile sinners
16 E sapendo che l' uomo non si salva per le opere della legge (e non diventa giusto), se non per la fede di Iesù Cristo, e noi in Iesù Cristo credemo, perchè siamo giustificati per la fede di Iesù Cristo, non per le opere della legge; per la qual cosa [per le opere della legge] non sarà giustificata ogni carne.	16 have nevertheless learnt that someone is reckoned as upright not by practising the Law but by faith inJesus Christ; and we too came to believe in Christ Jesus so as to be reckoned as upright by faith in Christ andnot by practising the Law: since no human being can be found upright by keeping the Law.
17 (E dico che) se noi (li quali siamo) in Cristo dimanderemo d' essere giustificati (per l' opere della legge, chè noi peccammo) e peccatori saremo trovati, or fu Cristo (servo e) ministro di peccato? Non piaccia a Dio.	17 Now if we too are found to be sinners on the grounds that we seek our justification in Christ, it wouldsurely fol ow that Christ was at the service of sin. Out of the question!
18 Chè se io farò quelle cose che ho disfatte, sì diventerò prevaricatore.	18 If I now rebuild everything I once demolished, I prove that I was wrong before.
19 Io son morto [alla legge] per la legge, perchè viva a Dio; e confitto son con Cristo nella croce.	19 In fact, through the Law I am dead to the Law so that I can be alive to God. I have been crucified withChrist
20 E già non vivo io; ma Cristo vive in me. E quello cotanto che vivo ora in carne, sì vivo nella fede del Figliuolo di Dio, il quale amò me, e diede sè medesimo per me.	20 and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me. The life that I am now living, subject tothe limitation of human nature, I am living in faith, faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.
21 Non voglio discacciare la grazia di Dio; chè certo se la giustizia fosse per la legge, adunque Cristo fu morto senza cagione.	21 I am not setting aside God's grace as of no value; it is merely that if saving justice comes through the Law, Christ died needlessly.
