BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Fratelli, voglio c'e voi sappiate che tutti li nostri padri (li quali uscirono d' Egitto) tutti stettero sotto nuvola, e tutti passarono il mare.	1 I want you to be quite certain, brothers, that our ancestors al had the cloud over them and al passedthrough the sea.
2 E tutti furono battezzati in Moisè colla nebbia e col mare.	2 In the cloud and in the sea they were all baptised into Moses;
3 E tutti manducarono quello medesimo cibo spirituale (ricevendo la manna dal cielo);	3 al ate the same spiritual food
4 e beverono del bevimento spirituale, il qual uscì della pietra; e quella pietra fu assimigliata a Cristo.	4 and al drank the same spiritual drink, since they drank from the spiritual rock which fol owed them,and that rock was Christ.
5 Ma molti di coloro non furono piacevoli a Dio; chè egli furono (morti e) abbattuti nel deserto.	5 In spite of this, God was not pleased with most of them, and their corpses were scattered over thedesert.
6 E tutte queste cose furono fatte a figura di noi, perchè noi non concupisciamo (nè desideriamo) de' mali, sì come fecero quelli,	6 Now these happenings were examples, for our benefit, so that we should never set our hearts, as theydid, on evil things;
7 e non siamo servitori delli idoli, sì come alquanti di loro, sì come scritto è: sedette il (mio) popolo a manducare e a bere, e levaronsi a giocare.	7 nor are you to worship false gods, as some of them did, as it says in scripture: The people sat down toeat and drink, and afterwards got up to amuse themselves.
8 E non fornicate, secondo che alquanti di loro fornicarono; ed egli perirono in uno dì, ventitrè miliaia.	8 Nor, again, are we to fall into sexual immorality; some of them did this, and twenty-three thousand mettheir downfal in one day.
9 E non tentiamo Cristo [secondo] che alquanti di loro tentorono; ed egli perirono de' serpenti.	9 And we are not to put the Lord to the test; some of them put him to the test, and they were killed bysnakes.
10 E non vogliate mormorare, secondo che alquanti di loro mormorarono; e perirono dall' ucciditore.	10 Never complain; some of them complained, and they were killed by the Destroyer.
11 E tutte queste cose veniano a loro in figura (e somiglianza); e son scritte a nostra correzione (e castigamento di noi), nelli quali in fine delli secoli son venute.	11 Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were described in writing to bea lesson for us, to whom it has fallen to live in the last days of the ages.
12 Adunque quelli che si pensa di bene stare, guardi che non caggia	12 Everyone, no matter how firmly he thinks he is standing, must be careful he does not fall.
13 Tentazione non vi reprenda, se non umana; e Dio sì è fedele, che non sosterrà che voi siate tentati più che voi possiate sostenere, ma farà che colla tentazione voi avrete aiuto, che possiate sostenere.	13 None of the trials which have come upon you is more than a human being can stand. You can trustthat God wil not let you be put to the test beyond your strength, but with any trial will also provide a way out byenabling you to put up with it.
14 Per la qual cosa fuggite, carissimi, dal servizio delli idoli.	14 For that reason, my dear friends, have nothing to do with the worship of false gods.
15 Io sì parlo a voi, come a savii; voi medesimi giudicate quello che io dico.	15 I am talking to you as sensible people; weigh up for yourselves what I have to say.
16 Il calice della benedizione, il quale noi benedicemo, or non è comunicamento del sangue di Cristo e 'l pane, che noi rompiamo, non è participamento del corpo del Signore?	16 The blessing-cup, which we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ; and the loaf of bread which we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ?
17 Chè uno è il pane (di molti grani), e molti semo uno corpo, e d'un pane (e d' uno calice) participiamo.	17 And as there is one loaf, so we, although there are many of us, are one single body, for we all sharein the one loaf.
18 Vedete (li figliuoli d') Israel secondo la carne; or tutti quelli, che manducano l'ostia (intra loro), non son participi dell' altare?	18 Now compare the natural people of Israel: is it not true that those who eat the sacrifices share thealtar?
19 Adunque che dirò? che alli idoli sia sacrificata alcuna cosa? o che l'idolo sia alcuna cosa?	19 What does this mean? That the dedication of food to false gods amounts to anything? Or that falsegods themselves amount to anything?
20 Che quello che i pagani sacrificano, sì l' offeriscono a' demonii, e non a Dio. Non voglio che voi siate compagni de' demonii; non potete bere il calice del Signore, e il calice delli demonii.	20 No, it does not; simply that when pagans sacrifice, what is sacrificed by them is sacrificed to demonswho are not God. I do not want you to share with demons.
21 E non potete essere perticipi della mensa del Signore, e della mensa de' demonii.	21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons as wel ; you cannot have a share at theLord's table and the demons' table as wel .
22 Avemo noi invidia del Signore? O siamo noi più forti di lui? Tutte le cose mi son lecite, ma tutte non mi convengono.	22 Do we real y want to arouse the Lord's jealousy; are we stronger than he is?
23 Tutte le cose mi son lecite, ma tutte non mi si convengono a edificamento.	23 'Everything is permissible'; maybe so, but not everything does good. True, everything is permissible,but not everything builds people up.
24 Niuno non dimandi di quella cosa che a sè è buona, ma dimandila per altrui.	24 Nobody should be looking for selfish advantage, but everybody for someone else's.
25 D'ogni cosa, che si vende nella taverna, manducate, ma non dimandando d' alcuna cosa per la conscienza.	25 Eat anything that is sold in butchers' shops; there is no need to ask questions for conscience's sake,
26 Chè del Signore è la terra, e la sua plenitudine.	26 since To the Lord belong the earth and all it contains.
27 Ma se alcuno di coloro che non sono fedeli v'invita a cena, e voletevi andare, d' ogni cosa che v'è posta inanzi manducate, non dimandando di nulla per il fatto della conscienza.	27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal, go if you want to, and eat whatever is put before you; you neednot ask questions of conscience first.
28 E se alcuno vi dice: questo fu sacrificato alli idoli, non ne manducate, per cagione di colui che il disse, e (non) per la (tua) conscienza.	28 But if someone says to you, 'This food has been offered in sacrifice,' do not eat it, out ofconsideration for the person that told you, for conscience's sake-
29 Chè nonne manduchi per l'altrui conscienza. Perchè sarà giudicata la mia libertà per l' altrui conscienza?	29 not your own conscience, I mean, but the other person's. Why should my freedom be governed bysomebody else's conscience?
30 E se io participo referendo grazie (a Dio), perchè son io biastemato per che io faccia grazie?	30 Provided that I accept it with gratitude, why should I be blamed for eating food for which I givethanks?
31 Adunque se voi manducate, ovver se voi bevete, ovver che voi facciate altro, ogni cosa fate a laude di Dio e a sua gloria.	31 Whatever you eat, then, or drink, and whatever else you do, do it al for the glory of God.
32 State e portatevi sì che non facciate offendimento (e che non diate male esempio) a' iudei e alle (altre) genti e alla Chiesa di Dio,	32 Never be a cause of offence, either to Jews or to Greeks or to the Church of God,
33 secondo ch' io per tutte le cose piaccio a tutti; perchè io non domando pur quello che sia utile a me, ma quello che sia utile a molti, perchè siano salvi.	33 just as I try to accommodate everybody in everything, not looking for my own advantage, but for theadvantage of everybody else, so that they may be saved.
