| 4 E per questa cagione Iosef partissi di Galilea, e venne della città di Nazaret in Iudea, in la città di David la qual si chiama Betleem; imperò che egli era del parentado e casa di David; | 4 So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee for Judaea, to David's town cal ed Bethlehem,since he was of David's House and line, |

| 6 Ma conciosia che fussero quivi compiuti li giorni del parto, | 6 Now it happened that, while they were there, the time came for her to have her child, |
| 7 Maria partorì il suo figliuolo primogenito, e involselo ne' panni, e puoselo nel presepio; imperò che non avea altro luogo, dove poner lo potesse a posarlo. | 7 and she gave birth to a son, her first-born. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in amanger because there was no room for them in the living-space. |
| 8 In quella contrada erano pastori che guardavano loro mandrie, vigilando in quella medesima ora la notte. | 8 In the countryside close by there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep duringthe watches of the night. |
| 9 E l'angelo del Signore venne a stare a lato loro; e la chiarità di Dio circondò loro e copersegli, molto dubitando di grande timore. | 9 An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified, |
| 10 Disse allora l'angelo: non dubitate; imperò ch' io vi annunzio una grande allegrezza, la qual sarà a ogni popolo. | 10 but the angel said, 'Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by thewhole people. |

| 12 E questo vi sia a voi segno: (andate e) troverete il fanciullo involuto ne' panni, e posto nel presepio. | 12 And here is a sign for you: you wil find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.' |
| 13 E subitamente fu fatto con l'angelo grande esercito e moltitudine di angeli, laudando Dio, e dicendo: | 13 And all at once with the angel there was a great throng of the hosts of heaven, praising God with thewords: |
| 14 Gloria sia allo eccelso Dio, e in terra sia pace agli uomini di buona volontà. | 14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favours. |
| 15 E fatto questo, incontanente li angioli partironsi e andorono in cielo; e li pastori parlavano insieme, e dicevano: andiamo (insieme) in Betleem, acciò che noi vediamo questo ch' è fatto, e che il Signore ci ha a noi mostrato. | 15 Now it happened that when the angels had gone from them into heaven, the shepherds said to oneanother, 'Let us go to Bethlehem and see this event which the Lord has made known to us.' |
| 16 E venendo egli, trovarono Maria e Iosef, e il fanciullo posto nel presepio. | 16 So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. |
| 17 E vedendo questo, conobbero che quello era detto loro di questo fanciullo, era vero. | 17 When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him, |
| 18 E ciascuno che li udiva, si meravigliava molto di queste cose che dicevano li pastori. | 18 and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them. |
| 19 Ma Maria si riservava tutte queste parole, e ricevevale nel suo cuore. | 19 As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. |
| 20 E li pastori ritornorono, laudando e glorificando Dio di ogni cosa che avevano udito e veduto, sì come era stato detto a loro. | 20 And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for al they had heard and seen, just as theyhad been told. |
| 21 E dopo che gli otto giorni furono compiuti, il fanciullo dovevasi circoncidere, e chiamoronlo per nome IESÙ; il qual nome gli fu posto dall' angelo, inanzi ch' egli fosse nel ventre generato. | 21 When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, thename the angel had given him before his conception. |
| 22 E dopo che furono compiuti gli giorni della purificazione di Maria, secondo la legge di Moisè portorono il fanciullo Iesù in Ierusalem, per appresentarlo dinanzi al Signore, | 22 And when the day came for them to be purified in keeping with the Law of Moses, they took him up toJerusalem to present him to the Lord- |
| 23 sì come è scritto nella legge del Signore; imperò che ogni maschio, aprente la vulva, è chiamato santo di Dio. | 23 observing what is written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to theLord- |
| 24 E volendo dare offerta a Dio, sì come è scritto nella legge, portorono uno paro di tortore, ovvero due columbi. | 24 and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is prescribed in the Law of the Lord, a pair ofturtledoves or two young pigeons. |
| 25 Fd ecco uno uomo, il quale avea nome Simeone, ch' era in Ierusalem, il qual era uomo giusto e timorato, e aspettava la redenzione d' Israel; e lo Spirito Santo era con lui. | 25 Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he lookedforward to the restoration of Israel and the Holy Spirit rested on him. |
| 26 E avea ricevuto promissione dal Spirito Santo, che non vederebbe la morte, che prima vederebbe Cristo del Signore. | 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on theChrist of the Lord. |
| 27 Il qual venne nel tempio, menato dal Spirito Santo. E li parenti suoi portorono il fanciullo Iesù, per fare per lui secondo la legge. | 27 Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to dofor him what the Law required, |
| 28 E Simeone prese Iesù nelle sue braccia, e benedisse Iddio, e disse: | 28 he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said: |

| 33 Ed era Iosef, e Maria madre di Iesù; e meravigliavansi di quelle cose ch' erano dette di Iesù. | 33 As the child's father and mother were wondering at the things that were being said about him, |
| 34 E Simeone benedissegli, e disse a Maria sua madre: ecco, costui è posto in ruina, e in resurrezione di molti in Israel, e in segno al qual li sarà contradetto. | 34 Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'Look, he is destined for the fal and for the rise ofmany in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed- |
| 35 E il coltello (suo, cioè la sua passione), trapasserà l'anima tua (per lo dolore tu sosterrai), acciò che siano rivelati li pensieri di molti cuori. | 35 and a sword wil pierce your soul too -- so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.' |
| 36 E qui era una profetessa, che avea nome Anna, figliuola di Fanuel, della tribù di Aser; questa avea gran tempo, e in sua vecchiezza avea preso marito, ed era vivuta con lui sette anni. | 36 There was a prophetess, too, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was wel on inyears. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years |
| 37 E dopo che rimase vedova, visse insino a ottantaquattro anni; la qual mai non si partiva del tempio, nè giorno nè notte, orando. | 37 before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving Godnight and day with fasting and prayer. |
| 38 Allora costei s' abbattè a quelle parole, e confermava dicendo ch' era il Signore: e parlava di lui a tutti coloro che aspettavano il ricomperamento d' Israel. | 38 She came up just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to al wholooked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem. |
| 39 E compiuto ogni cosa secondo la legge del Signore, tornorono alla città loro di Nazaret. | 39 When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their owntown of Nazareth. |
| 40 E il fanciullo era pieno di sapienza, cresceva e pigliava conforto; e la grazia di Dio era con lui. | 40 And as the child grew to maturity, he was filled with wisdom; and God's favour was with him. |
| 41 E andavano [gli suoi parenti] ogni anno in Ierusalem, nel giorno solenne della pasqua. | 41 Every year his parents used to go to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover. |
| 42 Ed essendo egli fatto di dodici anni, ascendenti quelli in Ierusalem secondo la consuetudine nel giorno della festa, | 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up for the feast as usual. |
| 43 e finiti gli giorni, ritornando loro a casa, rimase il fanciullo Iesù in Ierusalem; e gli suoi parenti nol conobbero. | 43 When the days of the feast were over and they set off home, the boy Jesus stayed behind inJerusalem without his parents knowing it. |
| 44 Ma imaginandosi ch' egli fusse nel (parentato ovvero nel) vicinato, vennero tre giorni, e cercavanlo fra li parenti e amici. | 44 They assumed he was somewhere in the party, and it was only after a day's journey that they went tolook for him among their relations and acquaintances. |
| 45 E nol trovando, ritornorono in Ierusalem per cercarlo. | 45 When they failed to find him they went back to Jerusalem looking for him everywhere. |
| 46 É fatto, dopo tre giorni trovoronlo nel tempio, ch' egli sedeva in mezzo de' dottori; e udiva quelli, e dimandavali. | 46 It happened that, three days later, they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers, listeningto them, and asking them questions; |
| 47 Onde egli meravigliavansi tutti, coloro che udivano, sopra la prudenza e sue risposte. | 47 and all those who heard him were astounded at his intel igence and his replies. |
| 48 E vedendolo, furono stupefatti. Al qual disse la sua madre: figliuolo, il perchè a noi ha' fatto a tal modo? ecco che tuo padre e io, dolenti, ti cercavamo. | 48 They were overcome when they saw him, and his mother said to him, 'My child, why have you donethis to us? See how worried your father and I have been, looking for you.' |
| 49 Ed egli a loro disse: il perchè mi cercavate? non sapete che mi bisogna essere in quelle cose che sono del mio padre? | 49 He replied, 'Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?' |
| 50 E loro non intesero la parola ch' egli a loro disse. | 50 But they did not understand what he meant. |
| 51 Ed egli discese con quelli, e venne in Nazaret; ed era suddito a quelli. Onde la sua madre conservava tutte queste parole nel cuore suo. | 51 He went down with them then and came to Nazareth and lived under their authority. His mother storedup al these things in her heart. |
| 52 E Iesù prosperava in sapienza ed età e grazia appresso Dio e gli uomini. | 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favour with God and with people. |
