1 E fatto è, che quando Iesù finitte tutti questi parlari, disse:	1 And it happened that, when Jesus had completed all these words, he said to his disciples,
2 Voi sapete che dopo due giorni sarà la pasqua, e il Figliuolo dell' uomo sarà tradito, per essere crocifisso.	2 “You know that after two days the Passover will begin, and the Son of man will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 E allora radunoronsi li principi de' sacerdoti, e li antiqui del popolo, in casa del principe de' sacerdoti, il qual avea nome Caifas.	3 Then the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.
4 E fecero consiglio, in che modo potessero pigliare e uccidere Iesù con inganno.	4 And they took counsel so that by deceitfulness they might take hold of Jesus and kill him.
5 E dicevano: non si faccia nel giorno della festa, acciò che non si levi rumore nel popolo.	5 But they said, “Not on the feast day, lest perhaps there may be a tumult among the people.”
6 Ed essendo Iesù in Betania, in casa di Simone leproso,	6 And when Jesus was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,
7 venne una femina a lui con uno vaso di unguento prezioso, e sparselo sopra il capo di Iesù, mentre ch' egli mangiava.	7 a woman drew near to him, holding an alabaster box of precious ointment, and she poured it over his head while he was reclining at table.
8 E vedendo questo, li discepoli indignoronsi, e dicevano che perdizione è questa?	8 But the disciples, seeing this, were indignant, saying: “What is the purpose of this waste?
9 Potevasi questo unguento vendere molto caro, e li denari dare alli poveri.	9 For this could have been sold for a great deal, so as to be given to the poor.”
10 E conoscendo Iesù (quel che dicevano), disse a loro: deh, perchè siete voi molesti a questa femina? essa ha operato in me buona operazione.	10 But Jesus, knowing this, said to them: “Why are you bothering this woman? For she has done a good deed to me.
11 Voi potete sempre avere li poveri con voi; ma sempre me non potete avere.	11 For the poor you will always have with you. But you will not always have me.
12 Questo unguento ha posto al corpo mio, per memoria della mia passione e sepoltura.	12 For in pouring this ointment on my body, she has prepared for my burial.
13 E imperò vi dico, che in qualunque parte del mondo sarà predicato questo evangelio, si dirà ch' ella il fece in memoria di me.	13 Amen I say to you, wherever this Gospel will be preached in the whole world, what she has done also shall be told, in memory of her.”
14 Allora andò uno de' dodici, che avea nome Iuda Iscariote alli principi de' sacerdoti.	14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the leaders of the priests,
15 E disse a loro: che mi volete dare, e io vel tradirò? Ed egli ordinorono di darli trenta denari d'argento.	15 and he said to them, “What are you willing to give me, if I hand him over to you?” So they appointed thirty pieces of silver for him.
16 E poscia cercava il tempo di tradirio.	16 And from then on, he sought an opportunity to betray him.
17 E il primo giorno dell' azime (che era il giovedì) dissero a Iesù: dove vuoli che noi apparecchiamo per mangiare la pasqua?	17 Then, on the first day of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
18 Disse a loro Iesù: andate nella città, e troverete uno uomo (che porta uno vasello d'acqua in mano, seguitatelo), e dite (al signore della casa): [Il Maestro dice]: il tempo mio è appresso; e imperò egli vuole fare la pasqua teco con li suoi discepoli.	18 So Jesus said, “Go into the city, to a certain one, and say to him: ‘The Teacher said: My time is near. I am observing the Passover with you, along with my disciples.’ ”
19 Fecero li discepoli come avea loro imposto Iesù, e apparecchiorono la pasqua.	19 And the disciples did just as Jesus appointed to them. And they prepared the Passover.
20 Ed essendo vespero, mangiava Iesù con li suoi dodici discepoli.	20 Then, when evening arrived, he sat at table with his twelve disciples.
21 E mangiando disse a loro: in verità io vi dico che uno di voi mi dee tradire.	21 And while they were eating, he said: “Amen I say to you, that one of you is about to betray me.”
22 Udendo questo, li discepoli molto si attristorono, e incominciorono a dire ognuno per sè: sarei io quello, Signore?	22 And being greatly saddened, each one of them began to say, “Surely, it is not I, Lord?”
23 E Iesù rispose, e disse a loro: colui che (pone e) intinge meco la mano nel catino, quello mi tradirà.	23 But he responded by saying: “He who dips his hand with me into the dish, the same will betray me.
24 Ma il Figliuolo dell' uomo va, come è scritto di lui; ma guai a quell' uomo, per lo quale il Figliuolo dell' uomo sarà tradito; meglio era per quello uomo, che mai non fosse nato.	24 Indeed, the Son of man goes, just as it has been written about him. But woe to that man by whom the Son of man will be betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had not been born.”
25 Rispose Iuda, che il tradiva, e disse: sarei io quello, Maestro? E Iesù disse: tu l' hai detto.	25 Then Judas, who betrayed him, responded by saying, “Surely, it is not I, Master?” He said to him, “You have said it.”
26 E cenando prese Iesù il pane, e benedisselo, e rompettelo, e dettelo a' suoi discepoli, e disse: tollete, e manducate, imperò che questo è il corpo mio.	26 Now while they were eating the meal, Jesus took bread, and he blessed and broke and gave it to his disciples, and he said: “Take and eat. This is my body.”
27 E poi prese il calice, e rendendo grazie (a Dio) dettelo a loro, e disse: bevete di questo tutti.	27 And taking the chalice, he gave thanks. And he gave it to them, saying: “Drink from this, all of you.
28 Imperò che questo è il sangue mio del nuovo testamento, il qual sarà sparto per molti in remissione de' peccati.	28 For this is my blood of the new covenant, which shall be shed for many as a remission of sins.
29 Ma io vi dico, ch' io non beverò oggi mai di questa generazione di vite, insino a quello giorno che ne beverò con voi del nuovo nel regno del Padre mio.	29 But I say to you, I will not drink again from this fruit of the vine, until that day when I will drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.”
30 E renduto ch' ebbe le grazie, andorono nel monte Oliveto.	30 And after a hymn was sung, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
31 E disse a loro Iesù: tutti voi in questa notte averete scandalo per me. Imperò ch' egli è scritto: io percoterò il pastore, e disperderansi le pecore della greggia.	31 Then Jesus said to them: “You will all fall away from me in this night. For it has been written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
32 Ma poi ch' io sarò resuscitato, io vi apparirò in Galilea.	32 But after I have risen again, I will go before you to Galilee.”
33 Rispose Pietro, e disse a lui: se tutti si scandalizzeranno in te, io non mi scandalizzerò mai.	33 Then Peter responded by saying to him, “Even if everyone else has fallen away from you, I will never fall away.”
34 Disse a lui Iesù in verità ti dico, che in questa notte, innanzi che il gallo canti, mi negherai tre volte.	34 Jesus said to him, “Amen I say to you, that in this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”
35 Disse a lui Pietro: ancora se fia bisogno ch' io mora con teco, non ti negherò. Similmente. tutti li discepoli dissero così.	35 Peter said to him, “Even if it is necessary for me to die with you, I will not deny you.” And all the disciples spoke similarly.
36 Allora venne Iesù con li discepoli suoi nella villa, la quale si è chiamata Getsemani, e disse alli discepoli suoi sedete quivi, insino ch' io vada colà per orare.	36 Then Jesus went with them to a garden, which is called Gethsemani. And he said to his disciples, “Sit down here, while I go there and pray.”
37 E prese con seco Pietro, e due de' figliuoli di Zebedeo; e cominciossi a contristare e turbarsi.	37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and saddened.
38 E disse a loro: trista è l'anima mia per insino alla morte; aspettate ivi (disse a loro), e vegliate meco.	38 Then he said to them: “My soul is sorrowful, even unto death. Stay here and keep vigil with me.”
39 E andò uno poco più oltre, e inginocchiossi, e con la faccia elevata diceva: Padre mio, se possibile è, (che) passi da me questo calice; nondimeno non sia come vogl' io, ma come vogli tu.	39 And continuing on a little further, he fell prostrate on his face, praying and saying: “My Father, if it is possible, let this chalice pass away from me. Yet truly, let it not be as I will, but as you will.”
40 E venne a' suoi discepoli, e trovolli dormire, e disse a Pietro: non poteste una ora vigilare meco?	40 And he approached his disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter: “So, were you not able to keep vigil with me for one hour?
41 Vigilate e orate, acciò che voi non entrate in tentazione; imperò che lo spirito è pronto, e la carne è inferma.	41 Be vigilant and pray, so that you may not enter into temptation. Indeed, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 E poi ancora andò, e orò la seconda volta, e dicea Padre mio, se questo calice non può passare da me, ch' io non beva, sia fatta la tua volontà.	42 Again, a second time, he went and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this chalice cannot pass away, unless I drink it, let your will be done.”
43 E venne poi un' altra volta alli discepoli suoi, e trovolli dormire (e lasciolli stare); imperò che gli occhi loro erano molto gravati.	43 And again, he went and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
44 E lasciati loro, anche da capo andò, e adorò la terza volta, quella medesima parola dicendo.	44 And leaving them behind, again he went and prayed for the third time, saying the same words.
45 Allotta venne ai discepoli suoi, e disse a loro: dormite e riposatevi; ecco che s' approssima l'ora, che il Figliuolo dell' uomo sarà tradito (e dato) nelle mani de' peccatori.	45 Then he approached his disciples and said to them: “Sleep now and rest. Behold, the hour has drawn near, and the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of sinners.
46 State su, andiamo; ecco che s' appressa colui che mi tradirà.	46 Rise up; let us go. Behold, he who will betray me draws near.”
47 E parlando egli, venne Iuda, uno de' dodici, e con lui era molta turba con le coltella e con bastoni, mandati da' principi de' sacerdoti e dalli antiqui del popolo.	47 While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived, and with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people.
48 E colui che il tradiva, dètte alle turbe questo segno, dicendo: colui cui vederete ch' io bascio, egli è esso, tenetelo.	48 And he who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying: “Whomever I will kiss, it is he. Take hold of him.”
49 E immantinente, giugnendo a Iesù, disse: Iddio ti salvi, maestro. E basciollo.	49 And quickly drawing close to Jesus, he said, “Hail, Master.” And he kissed him.
50 Disse a lui Iesù: amico, a che sei venuto? Allora s' appressò la turba, e puoseli le mani adosso, e teneronlo.	50 And Jesus said to him, “Friend, for what purpose have you come?” Then they approached, and they put their hands on Jesus, and they held him.
51 E uno di quelli ch' erano con Iesù istese la mano, e trasse fuora uno coltello, e percosse uno servo del principe de' sacerdoti, e taglio'li l'orecchia.	51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus, extending his hand, drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
52 Disse a lui Iesù; rimetti il coltello nel luogo suo; imperò che ogni uomo che piglierà il coltello, di coltello perirà.	52 Then Jesus said to him: “Put your sword back in its place. For all who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.
53 Or credi tu, ch' io non possa pregare il Padre mio, ch' egli mi manderebbe più di dodici (milia) legioni di angioli (che mi difenderebbono)?	53 Or do you think that I cannot ask my Father, so that he would give me, even now, more than twelve legions of Angels?
54 Come si adempirebbeno le Scritture, però [ ch' ] è bisogno così fare?	54 How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must be so?”
55 E allora disse Iesù alle turbe: come si va a uno latrone, così siete voi venuti a me con le coltella e con bastoni a pigliare me; continuamente io era con voi nel tempio insegnando, e non mi teneste.	55 In that same hour, Jesus said to the crowds: “You went out, as if to a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me. Yet I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not take hold of me.
56 Ma tutto questo si fa, acciò si adempiano le scritture de' profeti. Allora tutti li discepoli l'abbandonorono, e fuggirono.	56 But all this has happened so that the Scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples fled, abandoning him.
57 Eli Iudei tenevano Iesù (preso), e menoronlo a Caifas, principe de' sacerdoti, dove li Scribi e li Farisei erano radunati.	57 But those who were holding Jesus led him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had joined together.
58 Ma Pietro lo seguitava dalla lunga insino al palazzo del principe de' sacerdoti. Ed entrò dentro, e sedeva con la famiglia per vedere il fine.	58 Then Peter followed him from a distance, as far as the court of the high priest. And going inside, he sat down with the servants, so that he might see the end.
59 Ma li principi de' sacerdoti, e tutto il consiglio, cercavano testimonianza falsa contra di Iesù, acciò che li potessono dare la morte.	59 Then the leaders of the priests and the entire council sought false testimony against Jesus, so that they might deliver him to death.
60 E non la trovorono, non ostante che molti ne esaminasseno. Finalmente vennero due falsi testimonii.	60 And they did not find any, even though many false witnesses had come forward. Then, at the very end, two false witnesses came forward,
61 E dissero: costui disse che poteva distruggere il tempio di Dio, e dopo li tre giorni potealo rifare.	61 and they said, “This man said: ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and, after three days, to rebuild it.’ ”
62 E allora levossi il principe de' sacerdoti, e disse a Iesù non rispondi tu nulla a queste cose che costoro dicono contra di te?	62 And the high priest, rising up, said to him, “Have you nothing to respond to what these ones testify against you?”
63 E Iesù non fece motto. Il principe de' sacerdoti disse: io ti scongiuro dalla parte di Dio vero, che tu ci dichi, se tu sei Cristo figliuolo di Dio.	63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, “I bind you by an oath to the living God to tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”
64 E' disseli; tu l' hai detto; ma tanto vi dico che voi vederete ancora lo Figliuolo dell' uomo sedere dalla parte diritta della virtù di Dio, e verrà nelle nuvole del cielo.	64 Jesus said to him: “You have said it. Yet truly I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of the power of God, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
65 Allora il principe de' sacerdoti si stracciò le vestimenta, e disse: questo ha biastemato, sì che oggi mai non c'è più di bisogno d'altra testimonianza; ecco che ora avete udito la biastema.	65 Then the high priest tore his garments, saying: “He has blasphemed. Why do we still need witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy.
66 Che ve ne pare? Ed egli dissero: egli è degno di morte.	66 How does it seem to you?” So they responded by saying, “He is guilty unto death.”
67 E allora li sputorono nella faccia, e davano le guanciate; altri nella faccia li davano le gotate.	67 Then they spit in his face, and they struck him with fists. And others struck his face with the palms of their hands,
68 e dicevanli: profetizza, Cristo, chi è colui che ti ha percosso?	68 saying: “Prophesy for us, O Christ. Who is the one that struck you?”
69 Ma Pietro sedeva fuora nella sala; e venne a lui una serva, e disseli: e tu eri con Iesù Galileo.	69 Yet truly, Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a maidservant approached him, saying, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.”
70 E Pietro il negò, e disse: io non so quello che tu dichi.	70 But he denied it in the sight of them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”
71 E (poco stando) uscendo Pietro per la porta, un' altra lo vide, e dissegli in presenza di quelli ch' erano lì: costui era con Iesù Nazareno.	71 Then, as he exited by the gate, another maidservant saw him. And she said to those who were there, “This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
72 Ed egli un' altra volta il negò, e giurò che non conosceva quell' uomo.	72 And again, he denied it with an oath, “For I do not know the man.”
73 E stando uno poco, coloro ch' erano quivi dissero a Pietro: veramente tu sei di quelli, imperò che la tua loquela ti fa manifesto.	73 And after a little while, those who were standing nearby came and said to Peter: “Truly, you also are one of them. For even your manner of speaking reveals you.”
74 Allora cominciò Pietro a giurare e negare che mai non avea conosciuto quello uomo. E immantinente il gallo cantò.	74 Then he began to curse and to swear that he had not known the man. And immediately the rooster crowed.
75 E ricordato si fu Pietro delle parole che gli avea detto Iesù, (che): innanzi che il gallo canti tre volte tu mi negarai. E uscì fuori, e pianse amaramente.	75 And Peter remembered the words of Jesus, which he had said: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And going outside, he wept bitterly.
