Iona 1

BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 E fu fatta la parola di Dio a Iona, (profeta); figliuolo di Amati, e disse:	1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to Jonah son of Amittai:
2 Lièvati suso, e vae nella grande terra che si chiama Ninive, e predica in quella; però che la malizia loro sì è salita inanzi a me.	2 'Up!' he said, 'Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to them that their wickedness has forced itselfupon me.'
3 E Iona si levò suso per fuggire in (una terra che si chiama) Tarsi (e fuggì) dalla faccia del Signore; e iscese in Ioppen, e ivi trovòe una nave che andava in Tarsi; e diede loro (cioè alli nocchieri) lo naulo, e iscese nella nave con loro per andare in Tarsi (per fuggire) dalla faccia del Signore.	3 Jonah set about running away from Yahweh, and going to Tarshish. He went down to Jaffa and found aship bound for Tarshish; he paid his fare and boarded it, to go with them to Tarshish, to get away from Yahweh.
4 E lo Signore Iddio sì mandò in mare uno grande vento, e fu fatto (subitamente) grande tempesta nel mare, e la nave era in (grande) pericolo di rompersi.	4 But Yahweh threw a hurricane at the sea, and there was such a great storm at sea that the shipthreatened to break up.
5 E li nocchieri (per lo grande pericolo) ebbono grande paura, e li uomini gridarono allo Signore; e li vasi, ch' erano nella nave, gittarono in mare acciò che fosse leggeri; e Iona scese di sotto, e dormia con grave (e con grande) sonno.	5 The sailors took fright, and each of them called on his own god, and to lighten the ship they threw thecargo overboard. Jonah, however, had gone below, had lain down in the hold and was fast asleep,
6 E lo governatore della nave andò (di sotto) a lui, e disseli: per che t' addormenti? lieva suso, e chiama il tuo Iddio, se forse si ripensasse di noi, e non periamo.	6 when the boatswain went up to him and said, 'What do you mean by sleeping? Get up! Call on yourgod! Perhaps he wil spare us a thought and not leave us to die.'
7 E uno disse allo suo compagno (cioè lo padrone disse a quelli ch' erano in su la nave): venite (disse questi), e mettiamo le sorti, acciò che noi sappiamo per che questo male sia a noi. E misono le sorti; e caddono le sorti sopra Iona.	7 Then they said to each other, 'Come on, let us draw lots to find out who is to blame for bringing us thisbad luck.' So they cast lots, and the lot pointed to Jonah.
8 E dissono a lui: dimostra a noi quale sia la cagione perche noi abbiamo questo male; (e di' anoi) che mestiere tu fai, e di quale terra tu sei, e dove vai, ovvero di quale popolo tu sei.	8 Then they said to him, 'Tel us, what is your business? Where do you come from? What is your country?What is your nationality?'
9 Ed egli disse loro: io sono ebreo, e hoe in timore lo Signore Iddio del cielo, il quale fece lo mare e la terra.	9 He replied, 'I am a Hebrew, and I worship Yahweh, God of Heaven, who made both sea and dry land.'
10 E allora quelli uomini temettono molto forte, e dissono a lui: e per che facesti questo? E conobbono li uomini, ch' egli era fuggito dalla faccia del Signore, però che Iona sì l'avea manifestato loro.	10 The sailors were seized with terror at this and said, 'Why ever did you do this?' since they knew that hewas trying to escape from Yahweh, because he had told them so.
11 E dissono che doviamo noi fare, acciò che lo mare si cessi da noi? però che lo mare gonfiava sopra loro fortemente.	11 They then said, 'What are we to do with you, to make the sea calm down for us?' For the sea wasgrowing rougher and rougher.
12 E disse Iona: toglietemi, e mettetemi nel mare, e incontinente lo mare cesserà da offendervi; però ch' io so che questa tempesta viene sopra voi per la mia cagione.	12 He replied, 'Take me and throw me into the sea, and then it wil calm down for you. I know it is my faultthat this great storm has struck you.'
13 E li uomini s' ingegnavano fortemente per ritornare a terra, e non potevano, però che lo mare gonfiava sopra loro.	13 The sailors rowed hard in an effort to reach the shore, but in vain, since the sea was growing rougherand rougher.
14 E gridarono al Signore, e dissono: noi ti preghiamo, che non ci facci perire per l'anima di questo uomo; e non porre sopra noi lo sangue innocente, però che tu, Signore, facesti come volesti.	14 So at last they cal ed on Yahweh and said, 'O, Yahweh, do not let us perish for the sake of this man'slife, and do not hold us responsible for causing an innocent man's death; for you, Yahweh, have acted as yousaw fit.'
15 E presono Iona, e miserlo nel mare; e lo mare si posòe, e cessòe lo suo furore.	15 And taking hold of Jonah they threw him into the sea; and the sea stopped raging.
16 Allora li uomini della nave sì temerono Iddio con grande timore, e offerirono ostie allo Signore Iddio, e feciono voti (assai).	16 At this, the men were seized with dread of Yahweh; they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vowsto him.
