1 Alef A qual modo egli è mutato l'auro, mutato è il colore suo, si sono disperse le pietre del santuario nel capo di tutte le piazze?	1 How the gold has tarnished, how the fine gold has changed! The sacred stones lie scattered at thecorner of every street.
2 Bet Come sono reputati li (generosi e) incliti figliuoli di Sion, vestiti del primo auro, in vasi di terra, opera della mano del figulo?	2 The children of Zion, as precious as finest gold -- to think that they should now be reckoned likecrockery made by a potter!
3 Ghimel Ma le lamie sono scoperte, le mammelle hanno lattato li suoi cagnoli. (Lamie, come dicono le fabule, sono mostri che straziano li fanciulli, ovvero figliuoli, e poscia li restituiscono morti, e hanno la faccia di uomo e il corpo di bestia; e dicesi che sono più crudeli a' loro figliuoli, che tutte l'altre bestie). La figliuola del populo mio crudele è come struzzo nel deserto.	3 The very jackals give the breast, and suckle their young: but the daughter of my people is as cruel asthe ostriches of the desert.
4 Dalet Accostossi la lingua del lattante per la sete al suo palato; addomandorono li piccolini il pane, e non v'era cui a loro il rompesse.	4 The tongue of the baby at the breast sticks to its palate for thirst; little children ask for bread, no onegives them any.
5 He Perirono nelle vie quelli che usavano con diletto li cibi; si sono abbracciati nelle immondizie quelli si nutricavano nelle cune.	5 Those who used to eat only the best, now lie dying in the streets; those who were reared in the purpleclaw at the rubbish heaps,
6 Vau Fatta è maggiore la iniquità della figliuola del mio populo, del peccato di Sodoma, la quale è sommersa in un momento, e le mani non la pigliorono.	6 for the wickedness of the daughter of my people exceeded the sins of Sodom, which was overthrown ina moment without a hand being laid on it.
7 Zain Li suoi Nazarei (che sono li consacrati al Signore) furono più bianchi della neve, più splendidi del latte, più rubicondi del dente dell' elefante antiquo, più belli del saffiro.	7 Once her young people were brighter than snow, whiter than milk; rosier than coral their bodies, theirhue like sapphire.
8 Het Loro faccia è denigrata sopra li carboni; non sono conosciuti nelle piazze; loro cutica hassi accostata all' ossa, s'è seccata e fatta a modo di legno.	8 Now their faces are blacker than soot, they are not recognised in the streets, the skin has shrunk overtheir bones, as dry as a stick.
9 Tet Fue meglio alli uccisi di coltello, che alli ammazzati per fame; imperò che questi, consumati per la sterilità della terra, putrirono.	9 Happier those killed by the sword than those kil ed by famine: they waste away, sunken for lack of thefruits of the earth.
10 Iod Cossero le mani delle misericordiose femine li suoi figliuoli; si sono fatti a quelle cibo nella contrizione della figliuola del mio populo.	10 With their own hands, kindly women cooked their children; this was their food when the daughter ofmy people was ruined.
11 Caf Compiè il Signore il furore suo, sparse l' ira del suo isdegno; e abbruciò in Sion con il fuoco, e divorò le sua fundamenta.	11 Yahweh indulged his fury, he vented his fierce anger, he lit a fire in Zion which devoured herfoundations.
12 Lamed Non credettero li re della terra, e li universi abitatori del mondo, imperò che entrava l'oste e l'inimico per le porte di Ierusalem,	12 The kings of the earth never believed, nor did any of the inhabitants of the world, that foe or enemywould ever penetrate the gates of Jerusalem.
13 Mem per li peccati delli suoi profeti, e per le iniquità de' suoi sacerdoti, i quali nel suo mezzo sparsero il sangue de' giusti.	13 Owing to the sins of her prophets and the crimes of her priests, who had shed the blood of the upright,in the heart of the city,
14 Nun Errorono li ciechi nelle piazze, sonosi maculati con lo sangue; e quando non potevano, tenettero le sue stracciate vestimenta.	14 they wandered blindly through the streets, polluted with blood, so that no one dared to touch theirclothes.
15 Samec Gridorono a loro: partitevi tutti, o corrotti; partitevi, e andate, e non vogliate toccare; hanno fatto contenzione tutti, e commossi dissero: più non giungerà (fra la gente) chi abiti in essi.	15 'Keep away! 17 Ain Quando ancora ci mantenevamo, vennero a meno gli occhi nostri al nostro vano aiuto, quando riguardavamo attenti alla gente la quale non ci poteva salvare.	17 Continual y we were wearing out our eyes, watching for help -- in vain. From our towers we watchedfor a nation which could not save us anyway.
18 Sade Le nostre strade si sono fatte lasse nel cammino delle nostre piazze; èssi appressato il fine nostro; finiti sono li nostri giorni, imperò ch' egli è venuto il nostro fine.	18 Men dogged our steps, to keep us out of our streets. Our end was near, our days were done, our endhad come.
19 Cof Sono stati più veloci li nostri persecutori delle aquile del cielo; ci hanno perseguitati sopra li monti; ne hanno poste le insidie nel deserto.	19 Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the sky; they hounded our steps through the mountains, theylay in ambush for us in the wilds.
20 Res Nelli nostri peccati egli è pigliato il Signore Cristo, spirito della nostra bocca, al quale noi dicessimo: viveremo nelle genti nell' ombra tua.	20 The breath of our nostrils, Yahweh's anointed, was caught in their traps, he of whom we said, 'In hisshadow we shall live among the nations.'
21 Sin Godi, e rallègrati, figliuola di Edom, la quale abiti nella terra di Us; a te etiam perverrà il calice; ti inebrierai, e sarai nudata.	21 Rejoice, exult, daughter of Edom, you who reside in Uz! To you in turn the cup wil pass; you wil getdrunk and strip yourself naked!
22 Tau Finita è la tua iniquità, figliuola di Sion; più non aggiungerà, che ti transmigri; figliuola di Edom, egli visiterà la tua iniquità, discoprirà le tue peccata.	22 Your wickedness is atoned for, daughter of Zion, he will never banish you again. But your wickedness,daughter of Edom, wil he punish, your sins he will lay bare!
