Ecclesiaste 1

1 Parole (dette) dello Ecclesiaste (questionatore) figliuolo di David, re di Ierusalem.	1 The words of Ecclesiastes, the son of David, the king of Jerusalem.
2 Vanitade vana, disse il disputatore; vanitate sì è vôto, e ogni cosa vana sì è niente.	2 Ecclesiastes said: Vanity of vanities! Vanity of vanities, and all is vanity!
3 Or che vale all' uomo di tutta sua fatica la quale sofferisce di sotto al sole (per lo mondo, altro che vanitadi)?	3 What more does a man have from all his labor, as he labors under the sun?
4 Le generazioni vanno e vengono; ma la terra sta ferma.	4 A generation passes away, and a generation arrives. But the earth stands forever.
5 Il sole si leva, e ricolcasi, e ritorna al suo luogo; il dì si leva,	5 The sun rises and sets; it returns to its place, and from there, being born again,
6 e va dintorno al meridie, e china per aquilone; e illumina dintorno come spirito, e nelli suoi cerchielli si ritorna.	6 it circles through the south, and arcs toward the north. The spirit continues on, illuminating everything in its circuit, and turning again in its cycle.
7 E ogni fiume entra in mare, e il mare non trabocca; al luogo donde escono li fiumi, e' tornano, acciò che n' escano anche.	7 All rivers enter into the sea, and the sea does not overflow. To the place from which the rivers go out, they return, so that they may flow again.
8 E tutte le cose che sono malagevoli, non le puote l'uomo spianare per parole; l'occhio non si sazia per vedere, nè l' orecchia per l'udire.	8 Such things are difficult; man is not able to explain them with words. The eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor is the ear fulfilled by hearing.
9 Che è quello che è stato? dico che quello è quello che de' venire. Che cosa è quella che è stata fatta? dico esser quella che si ha a fare.	9 What is it that has existed? The same shall exist in the future. What is it that has been done? The same shall continue to be done.
10 Nulla cosa è nuova sotto il sole, e nullo puote dire: ecco questo è nuovo; e già trapassato è anticamente [in] quelle cose che furono innanzi a noi.	10 There is nothing new under the sun. Neither is anyone able to say: “Behold, this is new!” For it has already been brought forth in the ages that were before us.
11 Non è ricordo delle cose antiche, (nè di quelle che saranno); ma anco delle cose che debbono venire non sarà memoria appo quelli che nell' ultimo saranno.	11 There is no remembrance of the former things. Indeed, neither shall there be any record of past things in the future, for those who will exist at the very end.
12 Io Ecclesiaste fu' re di Ierusalem sopra lo stato de' giudei.	12 I, Ecclesiastes, was king of Israel at Jerusalem.
13 E posimi in cuore di domandare e di cercare saviamente di tutte le cose che sono sotto il sole. E questo reissimo pensiero lasciò Dominedio avere agli uomini, acciò che si occupassero in esso.	13 And I was determined in my mind to seek and to investigate wisely, concerning all that is done under the sun. God has given this very difficult task to the sons of men, so that they may be occupied by it.
14 Io vidi ciò che si fa sotto il sole, ed ecco che tutto è vanitade e istruggimento di cuore.	14 I have seen all that is done under the sun, and behold: all is emptiness and an affliction of the spirit.
15 Li uomini perversi malagevolmente si correggono; ma il numero degli stolti sì è infinito.	15 The perverse are unwilling to be corrected, and the number of the foolish is boundless.
16 Io pensai nel cuore mio, e dissi: ecco che io sono fatto grande, e trapassai per senno tutti coloro che furono inanzi me in Ierusalem; e la mente mia sì ha pensate molte cose saviamente, e apparai.	16 I have spoken in my heart, saying: “Behold, I have achieved greatness, and I have surpassed all the wise who were before me in Jerusalem.” And my mind has contemplated many things wisely, and I have learned.
17 Diedi il mio cuore ad imparare prudenza, e ammaestramento (di cuore), gli errori e la stultizia; e conobbi che anco in questo era fatica e afflizione di spirito.	17 And I have dedicated my heart, so that I may know prudence and doctrine, and also error and foolishness. Yet I recognize that, in these things also, there is hardship, and affliction of the spirit.
18 Imperò che dove è molta sapienza sì è molto isdegno; e chi aggiunge scienza, aggiunge fatica (e dolore).	18 Because of this, with much wisdom there is also much anger. And whoever adds knowledge, also adds hardship.
