1 Conciosiacosa adunque che la santa città si abitasse in ogni pace, e anche la legge ottimamente si osservasse per cagion della disposizione di Onia e della sua pietà, e per gli animi che aveano in odio le cose malfatte,	1 Now when the holy city was inhabited with all peace, and the laws were kept very well, because of the godliness of Onias the high priest, and his hatred of wickedness,
2 facevasi che anco essi re e principi conducessono il suo luogo degno con sommo onore, e nobilitassono il templo di grandi doni;	2 It came to pass that even the kings themselves did honour the place, and magnify the temple with their best gifts;
3 sì che Seleuco, re di Asia, donasse delle sue entrate tutte le spese che s' appartenevano al ministerio del sacrificio.	3 Insomuch that Seleucus of Asia of his own revenues bare all the costs belonging to the service of the sacrifices.
4 E Simone della tribù di Beniamin, constituito preposito del tempio, contendeva, contrastante a lui il principe de' sacerdoti, di (fabbricare, ovver) ordinare alcuna cosa iniqua nella cittade.	4 But one Simon of the tribe of Benjamin, who was made governor of the temple, fell out with the high priest about disorder in the city.
5 Ma vedendo non poter vincere Onia, venne ad Apollonio figliuolo di Tarsea, lo qual in quel tempo era duca della Celesiria e di Fenicia.	5 And when he could not overcome Onias, he gat him to Apollonius the son of Thraseas, who then was governor of Celosyria and Phenice,
6 E nunciolli, lo erario di Ierusalem esser pieno di una innumerabile quantità di denari, e una immensa (quantità e) copia di comuni cose, la quale non s'appartiene alla ragione de' sacrificii; ed esser possibile che tutte queste cose cadesse sotto la podestà del re.	6 And told him that the treasury in Jerusalem was full of infinite sums of money, so that the multitude of their riches, which did not pertain to the account of the sacrifices, was innumerable, and that it was possible to bring all into the king's hand.
7 E Apollonio, avendolo riferito al re delle pecunie che gli era stato nunciato, esso, chiamato Eliodoro, lo qual era sopra le sue faccende, mandollo con comandamenti, che questa predetta pecunia (li fosse mandata, e che lui la) transportasse.	7 Now when Apollonius came to the king, and had shewed him of the money whereof he was told, the king chose out Heliodorus his treasurer, and sent him with a commandment to bring him the foresaid money.
8 Subito Eliodoro si pose in via, sotto specie quasi di andar per le cittadi di Celesiria e di Fenicia; ma secondo la verità andava per adempire il proposito del re.	8 So forthwith Heliodorus took his journey; under a colour of visiting the cities of Celosyria and Phenice, but indeed to fulfil the king's purpose.
9 Ed essendo venuto in Ierusalem, ed essendo ricevuto benignamente dal sommo sacerdote nella città, narrò dello avviso ch' era stato dato delle pecunie; e manifestò per che cagione ch' egli era venuto; e domandava se queste cose erano vere.	9 And when he was come to Jerusalem, and had been courteously received of the high priest of the city, he told him what intelligence was given of the money, and declared wherefore he came, and asked if these things were so indeed.
10 Allora il sommo sacerdote li dimostrò li depositi esser alla vita delle vedove e delli pupilli;	10 Then the high priest told him that there was such money laid up for the relief of widows and fatherless children:
11 e alcune cose esser di Ircano Tobia, uomo molto grande e nobile, in quelle cose che avea riferito quello malvagio Simone; e tutto quello ch' era ivi, era quattrocento talenti d' ariento, e ducento talenti d'oro.	11 And that some of it belonged to Hircanus son of Tobias, a man of great dignity, and not as that wicked Simon had misinformed: the sum whereof in all was four hundred talents of silver, and two hundred of gold:
12 E saria appo noi al tutto impossibile permettere che fusse ingannati quelli i quali hannosi fidati di noi, e hanno posto in custodia lo aver suo nel tempio lo qual è avuto in venerazione per tutto il mondo per la sua santità.	12 And that it was altogether impossible that such wrongs should be done unto them, that had committed it to the holiness of the place, and to the majesty and inviolable sanctity of the temple, honoured over all the world.
13 Ed Eliodoro, per quello che lui avea in comandamento del re, diceva che bisognava sanza alcuna contraddizione, che li fusse portato al re ogni cosa.	13 But Heliodorus, because of the king's commandment given him, said, That in any wise it must be brought into the king's treasury.
14 E il dì constituito (e ordinato) entrò Eliodoro per ordinare di far condurre questo al re. E per questo non era poco timore per tutta la città.	14 So at the day which he appointed he entered in to order this matter: wherefore there was no small agony throughout the whole city.
15 E i sacerdoti stavano dinanzi all' altare prostrati con le stole, e invocavano dal cielo colui lo qual avea posto la legge dei depositi (cioè chiamavano Iddio), acciò che lui conservasse le robe salve a coloro i quali le aveano poste in deposito.	15 But the priests, prostrating themselves before the altar in their priests' vestments, called unto heaven upon him that made a law concerning things given to he kept, that they should safely be preserved for such as had committed them to be kept.
16 E già colui che vedea il volto del sommo sacerdote, percoteasi nella mente (e attristavasi); però la faccia e il colore, ch' era immutato, declarava lo intrinseco (suo) dolore dell' animo.	16 Then whoso had looked the high priest in the face, it would have wounded his heart: for his countenance and the changing of his colour declared the inward agony of his mind.
17 Però che una mestizia d'animo e uno spavento del corpo avea circondato il sommo sacerdote, per lo qual lo dolor del cuore suo a tutti che il vedeano era manifesto.	17 For the man was so compassed with fear and horror of the body, that it was manifest to them that looked upon him, what sorrow he had now in his heart.
18 E anco molti altri, congregati delle case, veniano pregando con una pubblica petizione, però che il luogo santo era venuto in disprezzo.	18 Others ran flocking out of their houses to the general supplication, because the place was like to come into contempt.
19 E le donne uscivano per le piazze, cinti i cilicii al petto; e anco le vergini, ch' erano chiuse, sollecitamente correvano a Onia; alcune altre alle mura; e alcune guardavano per le finestre;	19 And the women, girt with sackcloth under their breasts, abounded in the streets, and the virgins that were kept in ran, some to the gates, and some to the walls, and others looked out of the windows.
20 e tutte levando le mani al cielo.	20 And all, holding their hands toward heaven, made supplication.
21 Ed era una misera espettazione della moltitudine mista insieme, e del grande sacerdote constituito nel luogo della contenzione.	21 Then it would have pitied a man to see the falling down of the multitude of all sorts, and the fear of the high priest being in such an agony.
22 E tutti questi gridavano a Dio onnipotente, che lui conservasse quelle cose le quali (con fiducia grande) li erano state date in custodia, per quelli i quali si fidavano di loro.	22 They then called upon the Almighty Lord to keep the things committed of trust safe and sure for those that had committed them.
23 Ma Eliodoro ciò ch' egli avea deliberato mandava ad effetto, presente lui in quello medesimo luogo dell' erario con li suoi satelliti.	23 Nevertheless Heliodorus executed that which was decreed.
24 Ma il spirito di Dio onnipotente fece una grande evidenza di dimostrazione, per tal modo che tutti quelli, che furono arditi d' ubbidirli, per la virtù di Dio precipitando, loro furono convertiti in gran paura, sì che tutti s'erano divisi uno dall' altro molto.	24 Now as he was there present himself with his guard about the treasury, the Lord of spirits, and the Prince of all power, caused a great apparition, so that all that presumed to come in with him were astonished at the power of God, and fainted, and were sore afraid.
25 Però che apparve loro uno cavallo, il qual avea uno terribile (assessore e) cavalcatore, adornato di ottime vestimenta; e costui con impeto percosse prima con li calci Eliodoro; e colui che sedeva sopra il cavallo parea che avesse l'arme d'oro.	25 For there appeared unto them an horse with a terrible rider upon him, and adorned with a very fair covering, and he ran fiercely, and smote at Heliodorus with his forefeet, and it seemed that he that sat upon the horse had complete harness of gold.
26 E anco apparvono due altri giovani, ornati di bellezza, ottimi di gloria e vestiti di belle vestimenta, li quali lo circondorono, e da ciascuna parte lo flagellavano sanza dimora, percotendolo di molte piaghe.	26 Moreover two other young men appeared before him, notable in strength, excellent in beauty, and comely in apparel, who stood by him on either side; and scourged him continually, and gave him many sore stripes.
27 E subitamente Eliodoro cadette in terra, e preserlo, essendo involuto di molta caligine, e posto di sopra una sedia portatile e' fu portato via.	27 And Heliodorus fell suddenly unto the ground, and was compassed with great darkness: but they that were with him took him up, and put him into a litter.
28 E colui, il quale era entrato con molti corsieri e satelliti nel predetto erario, era portato non avendo ausilio alcuno, conosciuta la virtù di Dio manifesta.	28 Thus him, that lately came with a great train and with all his guard into the said treasury, they carried out, being unable to help himself with his weapons: and manifestly they acknowledged the power of God.
29 E lui istava muto mediante la virtù di Dio, privato di ogni speranza e salute.	29 For he by the hand of God was cast down, and lay speechless without all hope of life.
30 Eli altri benedicevano il Signore, però ch' egli magnificava il suo luogo; e lo tempio, lo qual poco inanzi era pieno di paura e di tumulto, apparendo lo Signore onnipotente, fu riempiuto di gaudio e di letizia.	30 But they praised the Lord, that had miraculously honoured his own place: for the temple; which a little afore was full of fear and trouble, when the Almighty Lord appeared, was filled with joy and gladness.
31 E allora alcuni degli amici di Eliodoro pregavano con instanza Onia, ch' egli pregasse lo Altissimo, che li dèsse la vita, lo qual era constituito nel supremo spirito.	31 Then straightways certain of Heliodorus' friends prayed Onias, that he would call upon the most High to grant him his life, who lay ready to give up the ghost.
32 E considerando il sommo sacerdote, che forse il re non suspicasse alcuna malizia esser usata per i Giudei contro a Eliodoro, offerse per la salute sua sacrificio di salute.	32 So the high priest, suspecting lest the king should misconceive that some treachery had been done to Heliodorus by the Jews, offered a sacrifice for the health of the man.
33 E pregando il sommo sacerdote, quelli medesimi giovani con quelle istesse vesti vestiti, istando presenti a Eliodoro, dissono: riferisci grazia a Onia sacerdote, però che per suo amore il Signore t' ha donata la vita.	33 Now as the high priest was making an atonement, the same young men in the same clothing appeared and stood beside Heliodorus, saying, Give Onias the high priest great thanks, insomuch as for his sake the Lord hath granted thee life:
34 E tu così flagellato [da Dio] nuncia agli altri le cose grandi di Dio e la sua podestà. E dette queste parole, non comparveno piò.	34 And seeing that thou hast been scourged from heaven, declare unto all men the mighty power of God. And when they had spoken these words, they appeared no more.
35 Ed Eliodoro, offerta l'ostia a Dio, e fatti grandi voti (e promissioni) a colui che li concesse la vita (cioè a Dio), e referendo grazia a Onia, e chiamato lo esercito, tornava al re.	35 So Heliodorus, after he had offered sacrifice unto the Lord, and made great vows unto him that had saved his life, and saluted Onias, returned with his host to the king.
36 E testificava a tutti quelle cose gra di del grande Iddio, le quali lui avea (provate e) vedute cogli occhi suoi.	36 Then testified he to all men the works of the great God, which he had seen with his eyes.
37 E domandando il re Eliodoro, chi fosse atto di mandar anco in Ierusalem, (ed Eliodoro) disse:	37 And when the king Heliodorus, who might be a fit man to be sent yet once again to Jerusalem, he said,
38 Se tu hai alcuno inimico, ovver traditor del tuo regno, mandalo in quel luogo; e lo riaverai flagellato (e straziato), s' egli potrà campare; però che in quel luogo egli è una particolar virtù di Dio.	38 If thou hast any enemy or traitor, send him thither, and thou shalt receive him well scourged, if he escape with his life: for in that place, no doubt; there is an especial power of God.
39 Però che colui, che ha abitazione in cielo, è visitatore e adiutore di quello luogo; e quelli che vanno per mal fare sono percossi e perduti.	39 For he that dwelleth in heaven hath his eye on that place, and defendeth it; and he beateth and destroyeth them that come to hurt it.
40 Di Eliodoro adunque, e dell' erario, così fu la cosa.	40 And the things concerning Heliodorus, and the keeping of the treasury, fell out on this sort.
