1 Now in those days, John the Baptist arrived, preaching in the desert of Judea,	1 Por aquellos días aparece Juan el Bautista, proclamando en el desierto de Judea:
2 and saying: “Repent. For the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.”	2 «Convertíos porque ha llegado el Reino de los Cielos».
3 For this is the one who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, saying: “A voice crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord. Make straight his paths.”	3 Este es aquél de quien habla el profeta Isaías cuando dice: Voz del que clama en el desierto: Preparad el camino del Señor, enderezad sus sendas.
4 Now the same John had a garment made from the hair of camels, and a leather belt around his waist. And his food was locusts and wild honey.	4 Tenía Juan su vestido hecho de pelos de camello, con un cinturón de cuero a sus lomos, y su comida eran langostas y miel silvestre.
5 Then Jerusalem, and all Judea, and the entire region around the Jordan went out to him.	5 Acudía entonces a él Jerusalén, toda Judea y toda la región del Jordán,
6 And they were baptized by him in the Jordan, acknowledging their sins.	6 y eran bautizados por él en el río Jordán, confesando sus pecados.
7 Then, seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees arriving for his baptism, he said to them: “Progeny of vipers, who warned to you to flee from the approaching wrath?	7 Pero viendo él venir muchos fariseos y saduceos al bautismo, les dijo: «Raza de víboras, ¿quién os ha enseñado a huir de la ira inminente?
8 Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance.	8 Dad, pues, fruto digno de conversión,
9 And do not choose to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God has the power to raise up sons to Abraham from these stones.	9 y no creáis que basta con decir en vuestro interior: “Tenemos por padre a Abraham”; porque os digo que puede Dios de estas piedras dar hijos a Abraham.
10 For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.	10 Ya está el hacha puesta a la raíz de los árboles; y todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será cortado y arrojado al fuego.
11 Indeed, I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who will come after me is more powerful than me. I am not worthy to carry his shoes. He will baptize you with the fire of the Holy Spirit.	11 Yo os bautizo en agua para conversión; pero aquel que viene detrás de mí es más fuerte que yo, y no soy digno de llevarle las sandalias. El os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego.
12 His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. And he will gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”	12 En su mano tiene el bieldo y va a limpiar su era: recogerá su trigo en el granero, pero la paja la quemará con fuego que no se apaga».
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee, to John at the Jordan, in order to be baptized by him.	13 Entonces aparece Jesús, que viene de Galilea al Jordán donde Juan, para ser bautizado por él.
14 But John refused him, saying, “I ought to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”	14 Pero Juan trataba de impedírselo diciendo: «Soy yo el que necesita ser bautizado por ti, ¿y tú vienes a mí?»
15 And responding, Jesus said to him: “Permit this for now. For in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all justice.” Then he allowed him.	15 Jesús le respondió: «Déjame ahora, pues conviene que así cumplamos toda justicia». Entonces le dejó.
16 And Jesus, having been baptized, ascended from the water immediately, and behold, the heavens were opened to him. And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him.	16 Bautizado Jesús, salió luego del agua; y en esto se abrieron los cielos y vio al Espíritu de Dios que bajaba en forma de paloma y venía sobre él.
17 And behold, there was a voice from heaven, saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”	17 Y una voz que salía de los cielos decía: «Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco».
