1 Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.	1 Ровоам пішов у Сихем, бо в Сихемі зійшлись ізраїльтяни, щоб окликнути його царем.
2 But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.	2 Зачув про це Єровоам, син Навата, що був у Єгипті, втікши туди від царя Соломона, і повернувся з Єгипту.
3 And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:	3 Послали по нього й покликали його; прийшов Єровоам і ввесь Ізраїль, і заговорили до Ровоама так:
4 “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”	4 «Батько твій наклав на нас важке ярмо; тож полегши тверде рабство твого батька й тяжке ярмо, що його він наклав на нас, і ми будемо тобі служити.»
5 But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,	5 Він відповів їм: «Через три дні прийдіть знов до мене.» І розійшовсь народ.
6 he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”	6 Тоді цар Ровоам узяв радитись із старшими, що служили його батькові Соломонові за його життя, й спитав: «Як ви порадите відповісти цьому народові?»
7 And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”	7 Ті йому сказали: «Коли ти будеш добрий до цього народу і догодиш їм, і говоритимеш з ними ласкаво, то вони будуть завжди твоїми слугами.»
8 But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.	8 Та він відкинув раду старших, яку вони йому дали, й почав радитися з молодими людьми, що зросли вкупі з ним і йому служили.
9 And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”	9 Він спитав їх: «Як ви порадите відповісти цьому народові, що сказав мені так: Полегши нам ярмо, яке наклав на нас твій батько!»
10 But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.	10 Молоді люди, що зросли з ним укупі, йому відповіли: «Так скажи народові, що говорив до тебе: — Твій батько наклав на нас тяжке ярмо, але ти полегши його нам! — скажи їм так: Мізинець мій грубший за клуби мого батька!
11 My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”	11 Батько мій наклав на вас тяжке ярмо, а я зроблю ваше ярмо ще тяжчим. Батько мій вас карав бичами, а я — скорпіонами.»
12 Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.	12 Єровоам і ввесь народ прийшли до Ровоама третього дня, як звелів цар, сказавши: Прийдіть, мовляв, до мене знов через три дні, —
13 And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.	13 та цар відповів їм жорстоко; покинув бо цар Ровоам раду старших
14 And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”	14 і говорив їм так, як пораяли йому молоді: «Батько мій наклав на вас тяжке ярмо, а я зроблю його ще тяжчим! Батько мій вас карав бичами, а я — скорпіонами!»
15 And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.	15 І не послухав цар народу, бо так було призначено від Бога, щоб справдилося слово, що Господь вирік був через Ахію з Шіло до Єровоама, сина Навата.
16 Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.	16 Увесь Ізраїль побачив, що цар його не слухає. Тоді народ відповів цареві: «Яка у нас частка з Давидом? Нема у нас спадщини з сином Єссея. Кожен, Ізраїлю, до своїх наметів! А ти, Давиде, гляди за твоїм домом!» І розійшлись ізраїльтяни по своїх шатрах.
17 But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.	17 Однак щодо синів Ізраїля, які жили в містах Юдеї, то над ними царював Ровоам.
18 And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was in charge of the tributes. And the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died. And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot, and he fled to Jerusalem.	18 Цар Ровоам послав Адорама, начальника над примусовими роботами, але сини Ізраїля закидали його камінням, і він умер, а цар Ровоам скочив на колісницю, щоб утекти в Єрусалим.
19 And Israel withdrew from the house of David, even to this day.	19 Так відпав Ізраїль від дому Давида по цей день.
