BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Después de esto, se fue Jesús a la otra ribera del mar de Galilea, el de Tiberíades,	1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee -- or of Tiberias-
2 y mucha gente le seguía porque veían las señales que realizaba en los enfermos.	2 and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he had done in curing the sick.
3 Subió Jesús al monte y se sentó allí en compañía de sus discípulos.	3 Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down there with his disciples.
4 Estaba próxima la Pascua, la fiesta de los judíos.	4 The time of the Jewish Passover was near.
5 Al levantar Jesús los ojos y ver que venía hacia él mucha gente, dice a Felipe: «¿Donde vamos a comprar panes para que coman éstos?»	5 Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, 'Where can we buy some bread forthese people to eat?'
6 Se lo decía para probarle, porque él sabía lo que iba a hacer.	6 He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do.
7 Felipe le contestó: «Doscientos denarios de pan no bastan para que cada uno tome un poco».	7 Philip answered, 'Two hundred denari would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.'
8 Le dice uno de sus discípulos, Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro:	8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said,
9 «Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos peces; pero ¿qué es eso para tantos?»	9 'Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?'
10 Dijo Jesús: «Haced que se recueste la gente». Había en el lugar mucha hierba. Se recostaron, pues, los hombres en número de unos 5.000.	10 Jesus said to them, 'Make the people sit down.' There was plenty of grass there, and as many as fivethousand men sat down.
11 Tomó entonces Jesús los panes y, después de dar gracias, los repartió entre los que estaban recostados y lo mismo los peces, todo lo que quisieron.	11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he thendid the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.
12 Cuando se saciaron, dice a sus discípulos: «Recoged los trozos sobrantes para que nada se pierda».	12 When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, 'Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing iswasted.'
13 Los recogieron, pues, y llenaron doce canastos con los trozos de los cinco panes de cebada que sobraron a los que habían comido.	13 So they picked them up and fil ed twelve large baskets with scraps left over from the meal of fivebarley loaves.
14 Al ver la gente la señal que había realizado, decía: «Este es verdaderamente el profeta que iba a venir al mundo».	14 Seeing the sign that he had done, the people said, 'This is indeed the prophet who is to come into theworld.'
15 Dándose cuenta Jesús de que intentaban venir a tomarle por la fuerza para hacerle rey, huyó de nuevo al monte él solo.	15 Jesus, as he realised they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, fled back tothe hil s alone.
16 Al atardecer, bajaron sus discípulos a la orilla del mar,	16 That evening the disciples went down to the shore of the sea
17 y subiendo a una barca, se dirigían al otro lado del mar, a Cafarnaúm. Había ya oscurecido, y Jesús todavía no había venido donde ellos;	17 and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the sea. It was getting dark by nowand Jesus had stil not rejoined them.
18 soplaba un fuerte viento y el mar comenzó a encresparse.	18 The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough.
19 Cuando habían remado unos veinticinco o treinta estadios, ven a Jesús que caminaba sobre el mar y se acercaba a la barca, y tuvieron miedo.	19 They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming towards theboat. They were afraid,
20 Pero él les dijo: «Soy yo. No temáis».	20 but he said, 'It's me. Don't be afraid.'
21 Quisieron recogerle en la barca, pero en seguida la barca tocó tierra en el lugar a donde se dirigían.	21 They were ready to take him into the boat, and immediately it reached the shore at the place they weremaking for.
22 Al día siguiente, la gente que se había quedado al otro lado del mar, vio que allí no había más que una barca y que Jesús no había montado en la barca con sus discípulos, sino que los discípulos se habían marchado solos.	22 Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and thatJesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves.
23 Pero llegaron barcas de Tiberíades cerca del lugar donde habían comido pan.	23 Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.
24 Cuando la gente vio que Jesús no estaba allí, ni tampoco sus discípulos, subieron a las barcas y fueron a Cafarnaúm, en busca de Jesús.	24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats andcrossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
25 Al encontrarle a la orilla del mar, le dijeron: «Rabbí, ¿cuándo has llegado aquí?»	25 When they found him on the other side, they said to him, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?'
26 Jesús les respondió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: vosotros me buscáis, no porque habéis visto señales, sino porque habéis comido de los panes y os habéis saciado.	26 Jesus answered: In al truth I tel you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs butbecause you had al the bread you wanted to eat.
27 Obrad, no por el alimento perecedero, sino por el alimento que permanece para vida eterna, el que os dará el Hijo del hombre, porque a éste es a quien el Padre, Dios, ha marcado con su sello».	27 Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son ofman wil give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.
28 Ellos le dijeron: «¿Qué hemos de hacer para obrar las obras de Dios?»	28 Then they said to him, 'What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?'
29 Jesús les respondió: «La obra de Dios es que creáis en quien él ha enviado».	29 Jesus gave them this answer, 'This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he hassent.'
30 Ellos entonces le dijeron: «¿Qué señal haces para que viéndola creamos en ti? ¿Qué obra realizas?	30 So they said, 'What sign wil you yourself do, the sight of which wil make us believe in you? What workwil you do?
31 Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, según está escrito: Pan del cielo les dio a comer».	31 Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'
32 Jesús les respondió: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: No fue Moisés quien os dio el pan del cielo; es mi Padre el que os da el verdadero pan del cielo;	32 Jesus answered them: In al truth I tel you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, itis my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;
33 porque el pan de Dios es el que baja del cielo y da la vida al mundo».	33 for the bread of God is the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
34 Entonces le dijeron: «Señor, danos siempre de ese pan».	34 'Sir,' they said, 'give us that bread always.'
35 Les dijo Jesús: «Yo soy el pan de la vida. El que venga a mí, no tendrá hambre, y el que crea en mí, no tendrá nunca sed.	35 Jesus answered them: I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me wil ever hunger; no one whobelieves in me wil ever thirst.
36 Pero ya os lo he dicho: Me habéis visto y no creéis.	36 But, as I have told you, you can see me and stil you do not believe.
37 Todo lo que me dé el Padre vendrá a mí, y al que venga a mí no lo echaré fuera;	37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; I will certainly not reject anyone who comes tome,
38 porque he bajado del cielo, no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la voluntad del que me ha enviado.	38 because I have come from heaven, not to do my own wil , but to do the wil of him who sent me.
39 Y esta es la voluntad del que me ha enviado; que no pierda nada de lo que él me ha dado, sino que lo resucite el último día.	39 Now the wil of him who sent me is that I should lose nothing of al that he has given to me, but that Ishould raise it up on the last day.
40 Porque esta es la voluntad de mi Padre: que todo el que vea al Hijo y crea en él, tenga vida eterna y que yo le resucite el último día».	40 It is my Father's wil that whoever sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and that Ishould raise that person up on the last day.
41 Los judíos murmuraban de él, porque había dicho: «Yo soy el pan que ha bajado del cielo».	41 Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the breadthat has come down from heaven.'
42 Y decían: «¿No es éste Jesús, hijo de José, cuyo padre y madre conocemos? ¿Cómo puede decir ahora: He bajado del cielo?»	42 They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can henow say, "I have come down from heaven?" '
43 Jesús les respondió: «No murmuréis entre vosotros.	43 Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other.
44 «Nadie puede venir a mí, si el Padre que me ha enviado no lo atrae; y yo le resucitaré el último día.	44 'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I wil raise that person up onthe last day.
45 Está escrito en los profetas: Serán todos enseñados por Dios. Todo el que escucha al Padre y aprende, viene a mí.	45 It is written in the prophets: They wil al be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father,and learnt from him, comes to me.
46 No es que alguien haya visto al Padre; sino aquel que ha venido de Dios, ése ha visto al Padre.	46 Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen theFather.
47 En verdad, en verdad os digo: el que cree, tiene vida eterna.	47 In al truth I tel you, everyone who believes has eternal life.
48 Yo soy el pan de la vida.	48 I am the bread of life.
49 Vuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto y murieron;	49 Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead;
50 este es el pan que baja del cielo, para que quien lo coma no muera.	50 but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die.
51 Yo soy el pan vivo, bajado del cielo. Si uno come de este pan, vivirá para siempre; y el pan que yo le voy a dar, es mi carne por la vida del mundo».	51 I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever;and the bread that I shal give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'
52 Discutían entre sí los judíos y decían: «¿Cómo puede éste darnos a comer su carne?»	52 Then the Jews started arguing among themselves, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'
53 Jesús les dijo: «En verdad, en verdad os digo: si no coméis la carne del Hijo del hombre, y no bebéis su sangre, no tenéis vida en vosotros.	53 Jesus replied to them: In al truth I tell you, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink hisblood, you have no life in you.
54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna, y yo le resucitaré el último día.	54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shal raise that person up onthe last day.
55 Porque mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre verdadera bebida.	55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, permanece en mí, y yo en él.	56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in that person.
57 Lo mismo que el Padre, que vive, me ha enviado y yo vivo por el Padre, también el que me coma vivirá por mí.	57 As the living Father sent me and I draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me wil also draw lifefrom me.
58 Este es el pan bajado del cielo; no como el que comieron vuestros padres, y murieron; el que coma este pan vivirá para siempre».	58 This is the bread which has come down from heaven; it is not like the bread our ancestors ate: theyare dead, but anyone who eats this bread wil live for ever.
59 Esto lo dijo enseñando en la sinagoga, en Cafarnaúm.	59 This is what he taught at Capernaum in the synagogue.
60 Muchos de sus discípulos, al oírle, dijeron: «Es duro este lenguaje. ¿Quién puede escucharlo?»	60 After hearing it, many of his fol owers said, 'This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?'
61 Pero sabiendo Jesús en su interior que sus discípulos murmuraban por esto, les dijo: «¿Esto os escandaliza?	61 Jesus was aware that his fol owers were complaining about it and said, 'Does this disturb you?
62 ¿Y cuando veáis al Hijo del hombre subir adonde estaba antes?...	62 What if you should see the Son of man ascend to where he was before?
63 «El espíritu es el que da vida; la carne no sirve para nada. Las palabras que os he dicho son espíritu y son vida.	63 'It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spiritand they are life.
64 «Pero hay entre vosotros algunos que no creen». Porque Jesús sabía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían y quién era el que lo iba a entregar.	64 'But there are some of you who do not believe.' For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believeand who was to betray him.
65 Y decía: «Por esto os he dicho que nadie puede venir a mí si no se lo concede el Padre».	65 He went on, 'This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.'
66 Desde entonces muchos de sus discípulos se volvieron atrás y ya no andaban con él.	66 After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more.
67 Jesús dijo entonces a los Doce: «¿También vosotros queréis marcharos?»	67 Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?'
68 Le respondió Simón Pedro: «Señor, ¿donde quién vamos a ir? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna,	68 Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life,
69 y nosotros creemos y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios».	69 and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.'
70 Jesús les respondió: «¿No os he elegido yo a vosotros, los Doce? Y uno de vosotros es un diablo».	70 Jesus replied to them, 'Did I not choose the Twelve of you? Yet one of you is a devil.'
71 Hablaba de Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, porque éste le iba a entregar, uno de los Doce.	71 He meant Judas son of Simon Iscariot, since this was the man, one of the Twelve, who was to betrayhim.
