BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Envió Antíoco, hijo del rey Demetrio, desde las islas del mar una carta a Simón, sacerdote y etnarca de los judíos, y a toda la nación,	1 Antiochus son of King Demetrius addressed a letter from the Mediterranean Isles to Simon, priest andethnarch of the Jews, and to the whole nation;
2 redactada en los siguientes términos: «El rey Antíoco saluda a Simón, sumo sacerdote y etnarca, y a la nación de los judíos.	2 this was how it read: 'King Antiochus to Simon, high priest and ethnarch, and to the Jewish nation,greetings.
3 Puesto que una peste de hombres ha venido a apoderarse del reino de nuestros padres, y he resuelto reivindicar mis derechos sobre él y restablecerlo como anteriormente estaba, y he reclutado fuerzas considerables y equipado navíos de guerra,	3 'Whereas certain scoundrels have seized control of the kingdom of our fathers, and I propose to claimback the kingdom so that I may re-establish it as it was before, and whereas I have accordingly recruited verylarge forces and fitted out warships,
4 y quiero desembarcar en el país para encontrarme con los que lo han arruinado y han devastado muchas ciudades de mi reino,	4 intending to make a landing in the country and to hunt down the men who have ruined it and laidwaste many towns in my kingdom;
5 ratifico ahora en tu favor todas las exenciones que te concedieron los reyes anteriores a mí y cuantas dispensas de otras donaciones te otorgaron.	5 'I now, therefore, confirm in your favour al remissions of taxes granted to you by the kings mypredecessors, as wel as the waiving of whatever presents they may have conceded.
6 Te autorizo a acuñar moneda propia de curso legal en tu país.	6 I hereby authorise you to mint your own coinage as legal tender for your own country.
7 Jerusalén y el Lugar Santo sean libres. Todas las armas que has fabricado y las fortalezas que has contruido y ocupas, queden en tu poder.	7 I declare Jerusalem and the sanctuary to be free; all the arms you have manufactured and thefortresses you have built and now occupy may remain yours.
8 Cuanto debes al tesoro real y cuanto en el futuro dejes a deber, te sea perdonado desde ahora para siempre.	8 Al debts to the royal treasury, present or future, are cancel ed henceforth in perpetuity.
9 Y cuando hayamos ocupado nuestro reino, te honraremos a ti, a tu nación y al santuario con tales honores que vuestra gloria será conocida en toda la tierra».	9 Furthermore, when we have won back our kingdom, we shall bestow such great honour on yourself,your nation and the sanctuary as wil make your glory known throughout the world.'
10 El año 174 partió Antíoco para el país de sus padres y todas las tropas se pasaron a él de modo que pocos quedaron con Trifón.	10 Antiochus invaded the land of his ancestors in the year 174 and, since the troops all rallied to him,Trypho was left with few supporters.
11 Antíoco se lanzó en su persecución y Trifón se refugió en Dora a orillas del mar,	11 Antiochus pursued the usurper, who took refuge in Dora on the coast,
12 porque veía que las desgracias se abatían sobre él y se encontraba abandonado de sus tropas.	12 knowing that misfortunes were piling up on him and that his troops had deserted him.
13 Antíoco puso cerco a Dora con los 120.000 combatientes y los 8.000 jinetes que consigo tenía.	13 Antiochus pitched camp outside Dora with a hundred and twenty thousand fighting men and eightthousand cavalry.
14 Bloqueó la ciudad, y de la parte del mar se acercaron las naves, de modo que estrechó a la ciudad por tierra y por mar sin dejar que nadie entrase o saliese.	14 He laid siege to the city while the ships closed in from the sea, so that he had the city under attackfrom land and sea, and al owed no one to go in or come out.
15 Entre tanto, regresaron de Roma Numenio y sus acompañantes trayendo cartas para los reyes y países, escritas de este modo:	15 Numenius and his companions, meanwhile, arrived from Rome, bringing letters addressed to variouskings and states, in the fol owing terms:
16 «Lucio, cónsul de los romanos, saluda al rey Tolomeo.	16 'Lucius, consul of the Romans, to King Ptolemy, greetings.
17 Han venido a nosotros, en calidad de amigos y aliados nuestros, los embajadores de los judíos para renovar nuestra antigua amistad y alianza, enviados por el sumo sacerdote Simón y por el pueblo de los judíos,	17 'The Jewish ambassadors have come to us as our friends and al ies to renew our original friendshipand alliance in the name of the high priest Simon and the Jewish people.
18 y nos han traído un escudo de oro de mil minas.	18 They have brought a golden shield worth a thousand mina.
19 Nos ha parecido bien, en consecuencia, escribir a los reyes y países que no intenten causarles mal alguno, ni les ataquen a ellos ni a sus ciudades ni a su país, y que no presten su apoyo a los que los ataquen.	19 Accordingly, we have seen fit to write to various kings and states, warning them neither to molest theJewish people nor to attack either them or their towns or their country, nor to al y themselves with any suchaggressors.
20 Hemos decidido aceptar de ellos el escudo.	20 We have seen fit to accept the shield from them.
21 Si, pues, individuos perniciosos huyen de su país y se refugian en el vuestro, entregadlos al sumo sacerdote Simón para que los castigue según su ley».	21 If, therefore, any scoundrels have fled their country to take refuge with you, hand them over to Simonthe high priest, to be punished by him according to their law.'
22 Cartas iguales fueron remitidas al rey Demetrio, a Atalo, a Ariarates, a Arsaces	22 The consul sent the same letter to King Demetrius, to Attalus, Ariarathes and Arsaces,
23 y a todos los países: a Sámpsamo, a los espartanos, a Delos, a Mindos, a Sición, a Caria, a Samos, a Panfilia, a Licia, a Halicarnaso, a Rodas, a Fasélida, a Cos, a Side, a Arados, a Gortina, a Cnido, a Chipre y a Cirene.	23 and to all states, including Sampsames, the Spartans, Delos, Myndos, Sicyon, Caria, Samos,Pamphylia, Lycia, Halicarnassus, Rhodes, Phaselis, Cos, Side, Arados, Gortyn, Cyprus and Cyrene.
24 Redactaron además una copia de esta carta para el sumo sacerdote Simón.	24 They also drew up a copy for Simon the high priest.
25 El rey Antíoco, pues, tenía puesto cerco a Dora en los arrabales, lanzaba sin tregua sus tropas contra la ciudad y construía ingenios de guerra. Tenía bloqueado a Trifón y nadie podía entrar ni salir.	25 Antiochus, meanwhile, from his positions on the outskirts of Dora, was continual y throwingdetachments against the town. He constructed siege-engines, and blockaded Trypho, preventing movement inor out.
26 Simón le envió 2.000 hombres escogidos para ayudarle en la lucha, además de plata, oro y abundante material.	26 Simon sent him two thousand picked men to support him in the fight, with silver and gold and plentyof equipment.
27 Pero no quiso recibir el envío; antes bien rescindió cuanto había convenido anteriormente con Simón y se mostró hostil con él.	27 But Antiochus would not accept them; instead, he repudiated al his previous agreements with Simonand completely changed his attitude to him.
28 Envió donde él a Atenobio, uno de sus amigos, a entrevistarse con él y decirle: «Vosotros ocupáis Joppe, Gázara y la Ciudadela de Jerusalén, ciudades de mi reino.	28 He sent him Athenobius, one of his Friends, to confer with him and say, 'You are now occupyingJoppa and Gezer and the Citadel in Jerusalem, which are towns in my kingdom.
29 Habéis devastado sus territorios, causado graves daños en el país y os habéis adueñado de muchas localidades de mi reino.	29 You have laid waste their territory and done immense harm to the country; and you have seizedcontrol of many places properly in my kingdom.
30 Devolved, pues, ahora las ciudades que habéis tomado y los impuestos de las localidades de que os habéis adueñado fuera de los límites de Judea.	30 Either now surrender the towns you have taken and the taxes from the places you have seizedoutside the frontiers of Judaea,
31 O bien, pagad en compensación quinientos talentos de plata y otros quinientos talentos por los estragos que habéis causado y por los impuestos de las ciudades. De lo contrario iremos y os haremos la guerra».	31 or else pay me five hundred talents of silver in compensation for them and for the destruction youhave done, and another five hundred talents for the taxes from the towns; otherwise we shall come and makewar on you.'
32 Llegó, pues, Atenobio, el amigo del rey, a Jerusalén y al ver la magnificencia de Simón, su aparador con vajilla de oro y plata y todo el esplendor que le rodeaba, quedó asombrado. Le comunicó el mensaje del rey	32 When the King's Friend, Athenobius, reached Jerusalem and saw Simon's magnificence, his cabinetof gold and silver plate and the state he kept, he was dumbfounded. He delivered the king's message,
33 y Simón le respondió con estas palabras: «Ni nos hemos apoderado de tierras ajenas ni nos hemos apropiado bienes de otros, sino de la heredad de nuestros padres. Por algún tiempo la poseyeron injustamente nuestros enemigos	33 but Simon gave him this answer, 'We have not taken foreign territory or any alien property but haveoccupied our ancestral heritage, for some time unjustly wrested from us by our enemies;
34 y nosotros, aprovechando una ocasión favorable, hemos recuperado la heredad de nuestros padres.	34 now that we have a favourable opportunity, we are merely recovering our ancestral heritage.
35 En cuanto a Joppe y Gázara que nos reclamas, esas ciudades causaban graves daños al pueblo y asolaban nuestro país. Por ellas daremos cien talentos». No respondió palabra Atenobio,	35 As regards Joppa and Gezer, which you claim, these were towns that did great harm to our peopleand laid waste our country; we are prepared to give a hundred talents for them.' Without so much as a word inanswer,
36 sino que se volvió furioso donde el rey y le refirió la respuesta, la magnificencia de Simón y todo lo que había visto. El rey montó en violenta cólera.	36 the envoy went back to the king in a rage and reported on Simon's answer and his magnificence,and on everything he had seen, at which the king fel into a fury.
37 Trifón, embarcado en una nave, huyó a Ortosia.	37 Trypho now boarded a ship and escaped to Orthosia.
38 Entonces el rey nombró a Cendebeo epistratega de la Zona Marítima y le entregó tropas de infantería y de caballería,	38 The king appointed Cendebaeus military governor of the coastal region and al otted him a force ofinfantry and cavalry.
39 con la orden de acampar frente a Judea, construir Cedrón, fortificar sus puertas y combatir contra el pueblo. El rey partió en seguimiento de Trifón.	39 He ordered him to deploy his men facing Judaea, and instructed him to rebuild Kedron and fortify itsgates, and to make war on our people, while the king himself went in pursuit of Trypho.
40 Cendebeo llegó a Yamnia y comenzó a hostigar al pueblo, efectuar incursiones por Judea, capturar prisioneros y matar.	40 Cendebaeus arrived at Jamnia and began to provoke our people forthwith, invading Judaea, takingprisoners, and massacring.
41 Reconstruyó Cedrón donde alojó caballería y tropas para recorrer en salidas los caminos de Judea como se lo tenía ordenado el rey.	41 Having rebuilt Kedron, he stationed cavalry and troops there to make sorties and patrol the roads ofJudaea, as the king had ordered.
