STUTTGARTENSIA-DELITZSCH	NEW JERUSALEM
1 וְלִפְנֵי חַג הַפֶּסַח כְּשֶׁיָּדַע יֵשׁוּעַ כִּי בָאָה שְׁעָתוֹ לַעֲבֹר מִן־הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה אֶל־אָבִיו כַּאֲשֶׁר אָהֵב אֶת בְּחִירָיו אֲשֶׁר בָּעוֹלָם כֵּן אֲהֵבָם עַד־הַקֵּץ	1 Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his hour had come to pass from this world tothe Father, having loved those who were his in the world, loved them to the end.
2 וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי הָחֵל הַסְּעוּדָה וְהַשָּׂטָן נָתַן בְּלֵב יְהוּדָה בֶן־שִׁמְעוֹן אִישׁ קְרִיּוֹת לְמָסְרוֹ	2 They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, tobetray him.
3 וַיֵּדַע יֵשׁוּעַ כִּי נָתַן אָבִיו אֶת־הַכֹּל בְּיָדוֹ וְכִי מֵאֱלֹהִים בָּא וְאֶל־אֱלֹהִים יָשׁוּב	3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God andwas returning to God,
4 וַיָּקָם מֵעַל הַשֻּׁלְחָן וַיִּפְשֹׁט אֶת־בְּגָדָיו וַיִּקַּח מִטְפַּחַת וַיַּחְגְּרֶהָ	4 and he got up from table, removed his outer garments and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist;
5 וְאַחַר יָצַק מַיִם בַּכִּיּוֹר וַיָּחֶל לִרְחֹץ אֶת־רַגְלֵי תַלְמִידָיו וּלְנַגֵּב בַּמִּטְפַּחַת אֲשֶׁר־הוּא חָגוּר בָּהּ	5 he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with thetowel he was wearing.
6 וַיִּקְרַב אֶל־שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס וְהוּא אָמַר אֵלָיו אֲדֹנִי הַאַתָּה תִּרְחַץ אֶת־רַגְלָי	6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'
7 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֵת אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי עֹשֶׂה אֵינְךָ יֹדֵעַ כָּעֵת וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן תֵּדָע	7 Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you wil understand.'
8 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו פֶּטְרוֹס לְעוֹלָם לֹא־תִרְחַץ אֶת־רַגְלָי וַיַּעַן אֹתוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ אִם־לֹא אֶרְחַץ אֹתְךָ אֵין לְךָ חֵלֶק עִמִּי	8 'Never!' said Peter. 'You shal never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can haveno share with me.' Simon Peter said,
9 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס אֲדֹנִי לֹא לְבַד אֶת־רַגְלַי כִּי אִם־גַּם אֶת־יָדַי וְאֶת־רֹאשִׁי	9 'Well then, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my head as wel !'
10 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו יֵשׁוּעַ הַמְרֻחָץ אֵין־לוֹ לִרְחֹץ עוֹד כִּי אִם־אֶת־הָרַגְלַיִם כִּי כֻלּוֹ טָהוֹר הוּא וְאַתֶּם טְהוֹרִים אַךְ לֹא כֻלְּכֶם	10 Jesus said, 'No one who has had a bath needs washing, such a person is clean all over. You too areclean, though not all of you are.'
11 כִּי יָדַע מִי יִמְסְרֵהוּ עַל־כֵּן אָמַר לֹא כֻלְּכֶם טְהוֹרִים	11 He knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said, 'though not al of you are'.
12 וַיְהִי אַחֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר־רָחַץ אֶת־רַגְלֵיהֶם וַיִּלְבַּשׁ אֶת־בְּגָדָיו וַיָּשָׁב לְהָסֵב וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם הַיְדַעְתֶּם מָה הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי לָכֶם	12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Doyou understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?
13 אַתֶּם קֹרְאִים־לִי רַב וְאָדוֹן וְהֵיטַבְתֶּם אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתֶּם כִּי־אֲנִי הוּא	13 You cal me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.
14 לָכֵן אִם־אֲנִי הַמּוֹרֶה וְהָאָדוֹן רָחַצְתִּי אֶת־רַגְלֵיכֶם גַּם־אַתֶּם חַיָּבִים לִרְחֹץ אִישׁ אֶת־רַגְלֵי אָחִיו	14 If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.
15 כִּי מוֹפֵת נָתַתִּי לָכֶם לְמַעַן תַּעֲשֹוּ גַם־אַתֶּם כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי לָכֶם	15 I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.
16 אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי הָעֶבֶד אֵינֶנּוּ גָדוֹל מֵאֲדֹנָיו וְהַשָּׁלוּחַ אֵינֶנּוּ גָדוֹל מִשֹּׁלְחוֹ	16 'In al truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one whosent him.
17 אִם־יְדַעְתֶּם זֹאת אַשְׁרֵיכֶם אִם־כֵּן תַּעֲשֹוּ	17 'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.
18 לֹא עַל־כֻּלְּכֶם דִּבַּרְתִּי יוֹדֵעַ אֲנִי אֶת־אֲשֶׁר בָּחַרְתִּי בָהֶם אַךְ לְמַעַן יִמָּלֵא הַכָּתוּב אוֹכֵל לַחְמִי הִגְדִּיל עָלַי עָקֵב	18 I am not speaking about al of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must befulfil ed: 'He who shares my table takes advantage of me.
19 מֵעַתָּה אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם בְּטֶרֶם הֱיוֹתָהּ לְמַעַן בְּבוֹאָהּ תַּאֲמִינוּ כִּי אֲנִי הוּא	19 I tel you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He.
20 אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי כָל־הַמְקַבֵּל אֵת אֲשֶׁר אֶשְׁלָחֵהוּ אֹתִי הוּא מְקַבֵּל וְהַמְקַבֵּל אֹתִי הוּא מְקַבֵּל אֶת־שֹׁלְחִי	20 In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me,welcomes the one who sent me.'
21 וַיְהִי כְּכַלּוֹת יֵשׁוּעַ לְדַבֵּר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה וַיִּסָעֵר בְּרוּחוֹ וַיָּעַד וַיֹּאמֶר אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָכֶם כִּי אֶחָד מִכֶּם יִמְסְרֵנִי	21 Having said this, Jesus was deeply disturbed and declared, 'In al truth I tel you, one of you is goingto betray me.'
22 וַיַּבִּיטוּ תַלְמִידָיו אִישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ וַיִּתְמְהוּ לָדַעַת עַל־מִי דִבֵּר	22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he meant.
23 וְאֶחָד מִתַּלְמִידָיו מֵסֵב עַל־חֵיק יֵשׁוּעַ אֲשֶׁר יֵשׁוּעַ אֲהֵבוֹ	23 The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus;
24 וַיִּרְמָז־לוֹ שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס לִדְרשׁ מִי־הוּא זֶה אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר עָלָיו	24 Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means,'
25 וַיִּפֹּל עַל־לֵב יֵשׁוּעַ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֲדֹנִי מִי הוּא	25 so leaning back close to Jesus' chest he said, 'Who is it, Lord?'
26 וַיַּעַן יֵשׁוּעַ הִנֵּה זֶה הוּא אֲשֶׁר־אֶטְבֹּל פִּתִּי לְתִתּוֹ לוֹ וַיִּטְבֹּל אֶת־פִּתּוֹ וַיִּתֵּן אֶל־יְהוּדָה בֶן־שִׁמְעוֹן אִישׁ קְרִיּוֹת	26 Jesus answered, 'It is the one to whom I give the piece of bread that I dip in the dish.' And when hehad dipped the piece of bread he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.
27 וְאַחֲרֵי בִלְעוֹ בָּא הַשָּׂטָן אֶל־קִרְבּוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו יֵשׁוּעַ אֵת אֲשֶׁר־תַּעֲשֶׂה עֲשֵׂה מְהֵרָה	27 At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you aregoing to do, do quickly.'
28 וּמִן־הַמְסֻבִּים לֹא־יָדַע אִישׁ עַל־מֶה דִבֶּר אֵלָיו כָּזֹאת	28 None of the others at table understood why he said this.
29 כִּי יֵשׁ אֲשֶׁר חָשְׁבוּ כִּי־אָמַר אֵלָיו יֵשׁוּעַ קְנֵה־לָנוּ צָרְכֵי הֶחָג אוֹ לָתֵת לָאֶבְיוֹנִים יַעַן אֲשֶׁר כִּיס הַכֶּסֶף תַּחַת יַד יְהוּדָה	29 Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy whatwe need for the festival,' or tel ing him to give something to the poor.
30 וְהוּא בְּקַחְתּוֹ אֶת־פַּת הַלֶּחֶם מִהֵר לָצֵאת הַחוּצָה וַיְהִי לָיְלָה	30 As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. It was night.
31 הוּא יָצָא וְיֵשׁוּעַ אָמַר עַתָּה נִתְפָּאַר בֶּן־הָאָדָם וְהָאֱלֹהִים נִתְפָּאַר בּוֹ	31 When he had gone, Jesus said: Now has the Son of man been glorified, and in him God has beenglorified.
32 אִם הָאֱלֹהִים נִתְפָּאַר בּוֹ גַּם־הָאֱלֹהִים הוּא יְפָאֲרֵהוּ בְּעַצְמוֹ וּבִמְהֵרָה יְפָאֲרֵהוּ	32 If God has been glorified in him, God wil in turn glorify him in himself, and wil glorify him very soon.
33 בָּנַי עוֹד־מְעַט מִזְעָר אֶהְיֶה עִמָּכֶם אַתֶּם תְּבַקְשׁוּנִי וְכַאֲשֶׁר אָמַרְתִּי אֶל־הַיְּהוּדִים כִּי אֶל־אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי הוֹלֵךְ לֹא תוּכְלוּ לָבוֹא שָׁמָּה כֵּן אֲלֵיכֶם אֹמֵר אֲנִי עָתָּה	33 Little children, I shal be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jews,where I am going, you cannot come.
34 מִצְוָה חֲדָשָׁה אֲנִי נֹתֵן לָכֶם כִּי תְאֵהֲבוּ אִישׁ אֶת־אָחִיו כַּאֲשֶׁר אָהַבְתִּי אֶתְכֶם כֵּן גַּם־אַתֶּם אִישׁ אֶת־אָחִיו תֶּאֱהָבוּן	34 I give you a new commandment: love one another; you must love one another just as I have lovedyou.
35 בָּזֹאת יֵדְעוּ כֻלָּם כִּי תַלְמִידַי אַתֶּם בִּהְיוֹת אַהֲבָה בֵּינֵיכֶם	35 It is by your love for one another, that everyone wil recognise you as my disciples.
36 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּטְרוֹס אֲדֹנִי אָנָה תֵּלֵךְ וַיַּעַן אֹתוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ אֶל־אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי הוֹלֵךְ שָׁמָּה לֹא־תוּכַל עַתָּה לָלֶכֶת אַחֲרָי אַךְ אַחֲרֵי־כֵן תֵלֵךְ אַחֲרָי	36 Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Now you cannot fol ow me where I amgoing, but later you shall fol ow me.'
37 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו פֶּטְרוֹס אֲדֹנִי מַדּוּעַ לֹא־אוּכַל עַתָּה לָלֶכֶת אַחֲרֶיךָ הֵן־נַפְשִׁי בְּעַד־נַפְשְׁךָ אֶתֵּן	37 Peter said to him, 'Why can I not fol ow you now? I will lay down my life for you.'
38 וַיַּעַן אֹתוֹ יֵשׁוּעַ הֲכִי־תִתֵּן נַפְשְׁךָ בְּעַד נַפְשִׁי אָמֵן אָמֵן אֲנִי אֹמֵר לָךְ בְּטֶרֶם יִקְרָא הַתַּרְנְגֹל תְּכַחֵשׁ בִּי שָׁלשׁ פְּעָמִים	38 'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'In al truth I tel you, before the cock crows you wilhave disowned me three times.'
