1 וַיְהִי לִיהֹושָׁפָט עֹשֶׁר וְכָבֹוד לָרֹב וַיִּתְחַתֵּן לְאַחְאָב	1 Although Jehoshaphat enjoyed great wealth and honour, he al ied himself by marriage to Ahab.
2 וַיֵּרֶד לְקֵץ שָׁנִים אֶל־אַחְאָב לְשֹׁמְרֹון וַיִּזְבַּח־לֹו אַחְאָב צֹאן וּבָקָר לָרֹב וְלָעָם אֲשֶׁר עִמֹּו וַיְסִיתֵהוּ לַעֲלֹות אֶל־רָמֹות גִּלְעָד	2 After some years he paid a visit to Ahab in Samaria. Ahab slaughtered an immense number of sheepand oxen for him and his retinue, to induce him to attack Ramoth-Gilead.
3 וַיֹּאמֶר אַחְאָב מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהֹושָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה הֲתֵלֵךְ עִמִּי רָמֹת גִּלְעָד וַיֹּאמֶר לֹו כָּמֹונִי כָמֹוךָ וּכְעַמְּךָ עַמִּי וְעִמְּךָ בַּמִּלְחָמָה	3 Ahab king of Israel then said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, 'Wil you come with me to Ramoth-Gilead?' He replied, 'I wil share in battle with you, my men with yours.'
4 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹושָׁפָט אֶל־מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל דְּרָשׁ־נָא כַיֹּום אֶת־דְּבַר יְהוָה	4 Jehoshaphat, however, said to the king of Israel, 'First, please consult the word of Yahweh.'
5 וַיִּקְבֹּץ מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת־הַנְּבִאִים אַרְבַּע מֵאֹות אִישׁ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם הֲנֵלֵךְ אֶל־רָמֹת גִּלְעָד לַמִּלְחָמָה אִם־אֶחְדָּל וַיֹּאמְרוּ עֲלֵה וְיִתֵּן הָאֱלֹהִים בְּיַד הַמֶּלֶךְ	5 So the king of Israel cal ed the prophets together, four hundred of them. 'Should we go and attackRamoth-Gilead,' he asked, 'or should I hold back?' 'March,' they replied, 'for God wil deliver it into the king'spower.'
6 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹושָׁפָט הַאֵין פֹּה נָבִיא לַיהוָה עֹוד וְנִדְרְשָׁה מֵאֹתֹו	6 Jehoshaphat, however, said, 'Is there no other prophet of Yahweh here, for us to consult?'
7 וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל ׀ אֶל־יְהֹושָׁפָט עֹוד אִישׁ־אֶחָד לִדְרֹושׁ אֶת־יְהוָה מֵאֹתֹו וַאֲנִי שְׂנֵאתִיהוּ כִּי־אֵינֶנּוּ מִתְנַבֵּא עָלַי לְטֹובָה כִּי כָל־יָמָיו לְרָעָה הוּא מִיכָיְהוּ בֶן־יִמְלָא וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹושָׁפָט אַל־יֹאמַר הַמֶּלֶךְ כֵּן	7 The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, 'There is one more man through whom we can consultYahweh, but I hate him because he never has a favourable prophecy for me, always unfavourable ones; he isMicaiah son of Imlah.' 'The king should not say such things,' said Jehoshaphat.
8 וַיִּקְרָא מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־סָרִיס אֶחָד וַיֹּאמֶר מַהֵר [מִיכָהוּ כ] (מִיכָיְהוּ ק) בֶן־יִמְלָא	8 The king of Israel then summoned a court official and said, 'Bring Micaiah son of Imlah immediately.'
9 וּמֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהֹושָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה יֹושְׁבִים אִישׁ עַל־כִּסְאֹו מְלֻבָּשִׁים בְּגָדִים וְיֹשְׁבִים בְּגֹרֶן פֶּתַח שַׁעַר שֹׁמְרֹון וְכָל־הַנְּבִיאִים מִתְנַבְּאִים לִפְנֵיהֶם	9 The king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, wearing their robes;in an open space just outside the gate of Samaria, with al the prophets prophesying before them,
10 וַיַּעַשׂ לֹו צִדְקִיָּהוּ בֶן־כְּנַעֲנָה קַרְנֵי בַרְזֶל וַיֹּאמֶר כֹּה־אָמַר יְהוָה בְּאֵלֶּה תְּנַגַּח אֶת־אֲרָם עַד־כַּלֹּותָם	10 Zedekiah son of Chenaanah, who had made himself some iron horns, said, 'Yahweh says, "Withhorns like these, you will gore the Aramaeans til you make an end of them." '
11 וְכָל־הַנְּבִאִים נִבְּאִים כֵּן לֵאמֹר עֲלֵה רָמֹת גִּלְעָד וְהַצְלַח וְנָתַן יְהוָה בְּיַד הַמֶּלֶךְ	11 And al the prophets prophesied in the same vein, saying, 'March on Ramoth-Gilead! Success issure, for Yahweh has already given it to the king!'
12 וְהַמַּלְאָךְ אֲשֶׁר־הָלַךְ ׀ לִקְרֹא לְמִיכָיְהוּ דִּבֶּר אֵלָיו לֵאמֹר הִנֵּה דִּבְרֵי הַנְּבִאִים פֶּה־אֶחָד טֹוב אֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְ וִיהִי־נָא דְבָרְךָ כְּאַחַד מֵהֶם וְדִבַּרְתָּ טֹּוב	12 The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, 'Look! What the prophets are sayingis uniformly favourable to the king. So I hope you wil say the same as they do and speak favourably.'
13 וַיֹּאמֶר מִיכָיְהוּ חַי־יְהוָה כִּי אֶת־אֲשֶׁר־יֹאמַר אֱלֹהַי אֹתֹו אֲדַבֵּר	13 Micaiah said, 'As Yahweh lives, I shal speak exactly as Yahweh tells me!'
14 וַיָּבֹא אֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְ וַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֵלָיו מִיכָה הֲנֵלֵךְ אֶל־רָמֹת גִּלְעָד לַמִּלְחָמָה אִם־אֶחְדָּל וַיֹּאמֶר עֲלוּ וְהַצְלִיחוּ וְיִנָּתְנוּ בְּיֶדְכֶם	14 When he came to the king, the king said, 'Micaiah, should we march to attack Ramoth-Gilead, orshould I hold back?' He replied, 'Go and conquer, Yahweh wil deliver them into your power!'
15 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו הַמֶּלֶךְ עַד־כַּמֶּה פְעָמִים אֲנִי מַשְׁבִּיעֶךָ אֲשֶׁר לֹא־תְדַבֵּר אֵלַי רַק־אֱמֶת בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה	15 The king went on, 'How often must I put you on oath to tel me nothing but the truth in the name ofYahweh?'
16 וַיֹּאמֶר רָאִיתִי אֶת־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל נְפֹוצִים עַל־הֶהָרִים כַּצֹּאן אֲשֶׁר אֵין־לָהֶן רֹעֶה וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה לֹא־אֲדֹנִים לָאֵלֶּה יָשׁוּבוּ אִישׁ־לְבֵיתֹו בְּשָׁלֹום	16 Then he spoke out. I saw al Israel scattered on the mountains like sheep without a shepherd. AndYahweh said, 'These have no master, let them all go peaceful y home!'
17 וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהֹושָׁפָט הֲלֹא אָמַרְתִּי אֵלֶיךָ לֹא־יִתְנַבֵּא עָלַי טֹוב כִּי אִם־לְרָע׃ ס	17 At this the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'Did I not tell you that he never gives me favourableprophecies, but only unfavourable ones?'
18 וַיֹּאמֶר לָכֵן שִׁמְעוּ דְבַר־יְהוָה רָאִיתִי אֶת־יְהוָה יֹושֵׁב עַל־כִּסְאֹו וְכָל־צְבָא הַשָּׁמַיִם עֹמְדִים עַל־יְמִינֹו וּשְׂמֹאלֹו	18 Micaiah went on, 'Now listen to the word of Yahweh. I saw Yahweh seated on his throne with thewhole array of heaven standing on his right and on his left.
19 וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה מִי יְפַתֶּה אֶת־אַחְאָב מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיַעַל וְיִפֹּל בְּרָמֹות גִּלְעָד וַיֹּאמֶר זֶה אֹמֵר כָּכָה וְזֶה אֹמֵר כָּכָה	19 Yahweh said, "Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into marching to his death at Ramoth-Gilead?" Atwhich some answered one way, and some another.
20 וַיֵּצֵא הָרוּחַ וַיַּעֲמֹד לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וַיֹּאמֶר אֲנִי אֲפַתֶּנּוּ וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֵלָיו בַּמָּה	20 A spirit then came forward and stood before Yahweh and said, "I wil entice him." "How?" Yahweh asked.
21 וַיֹּאמֶר אֵצֵא וְהָיִיתִי לְרוּחַ שֶׁקֶר בְּפִי כָּל־נְבִיאָיו וַיֹּאמֶר תְּפַתֶּה וְגַם־תּוּכָל צֵא וַעֲשֵׂה־כֵן	21 He replied, "I shall go and be a deceptive spirit in the mouths of all his prophets." Yahweh said, "You wil succeed in enticing him. Go and do it."
22 וְעַתָּה הִנֵּה נָתַן יְהוָה רוּחַ שֶׁקֶר בְּפִי נְבִיאֶיךָ אֵלֶּה וַיהוָה דִּבֶּר עָלֶיךָ רָעָה׃ ס	22 And now, you see, Yahweh has put a deceptive spirit into the mouths of your prophets here, for infact Yahweh has pronounced disaster on you.'
23 וַיִּגַּשׁ צִדְקִיָּהוּ בֶן־כְּנַעֲנָה וַיַּךְ אֶת־מִיכָיְהוּ עַל־הַלֶּחִי וַיֹּאמֶר אֵי זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ עָבַר רוּחַ־יְהוָה מֵאִתִּי לְדַבֵּר אֹתָךְ	23 Zedekiah son of Chenaanah then came up, struck Micaiah on the cheek and said, 'Which way didYahweh's spirit leave me, to speak to you?'
24 וַיֹּאמֶר מִיכָיְהוּ הִנְּךָ רֹאֶה בַּיֹּום הַהוּא אֲשֶׁר תָּבֹוא חֶדֶר בְּחֶדֶר לְהֵחָבֵא	24 'That is what you wil find out,' Micaiah retorted, 'the day you go from room to room, trying to hide.'
25 וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל קְחוּ אֶת־מִיכָיְהוּ וַהֲשִׁיבֻהוּ אֶל־אָמֹון שַׂר־הָעִיר וְאֶל־יֹואָשׁ בֶּן־הַמֶּלֶךְ	25 The king of Israel said, 'Seize Micaiah and hand him over to Amon governor of the city, and Joashthe king's son,
26 וַאֲמַרְתֶּם כֹּה אָמַר הַמֶּלֶךְ שִׂימוּ זֶה בֵּית הַכֶּלֶא וְהַאֲכִלֻהוּ לֶחֶם לַחַץ וּמַיִם לַחַץ עַד שׁוּבִי בְשָׁלֹום	26 and say, "These are the king's orders: Put this man in prison and feed him on nothing but bread andwater until I am safely home." '
27 וַיֹּאמֶר מִיכָיְהוּ אִם־שֹׁוב תָּשׁוּב בְּשָׁלֹום לֹא־דִבֶּר יְהוָה בִּי וַיֹּאמֶר שִׁמְעוּ עַמִּים כֻּלָּם׃ פ	27 Micaiah said, 'If you ever do get home safely, Yahweh has not spoken through me.'
28 וַיַּעַל מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהֹושָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה אֶל־רָמֹת גִּלְעָד	28 The king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah marched on Ramoth-Gilead.
29 וַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהֹושָׁפָט הִתְחַפֵּשׂ וָבֹוא בַמִּלְחָמָה וְאַתָּה לְבַשׁ בְּגָדֶיךָ וַיִּתְחַפֵּשׂ מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיָּבֹאוּ בַּמִּלְחָמָה	29 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'I shall disguise myself to go into battle, but you put on yourrobes.' So the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into battle.
30 וּמֶלֶךְ אֲרָם צִוָּה אֶת־שָׂרֵי הָרֶכֶב אֲשֶׁר־לֹו לֵאמֹר לֹא תִּלָּחֲמוּ אֶת־הַקָּטֹן אֶת־הַגָּדֹול כִּי אִם־אֶת־מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל לְבַדֹּו	30 Now, the king of Aram had given his chariot commanders the fol owing order, 'Do not attack anyoneof whatever rank, except the king of Israel.'
31 וַיְהִי כִּרְאֹות שָׂרֵי הָרֶכֶב אֶת־יְהֹושָׁפָט וְהֵמָּה אָמְרוּ מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל הוּא וַיָּסֹבּוּ עָלָיו לְהִלָּחֵם וַיִּזְעַק יְהֹושָׁפָט וַיהוָה עֲזָרֹו וַיְסִיתֵם אֱלֹהִים מִמֶּנּוּ	31 So, when the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, 'That is the king of Israel,' andsurrounded him to attack. But when Jehoshaphat shouted his war cry, Yahweh came to his help, God drew themaway from him,
32 וַיְהִי כִּרְאֹות שָׂרֵי הָרֶכֶב כִּי לֹא־הָיָה מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיָּשֻׁבוּ מֵאַחֲרָיו	32 for the chariot commanders, realising that he was not the king of Israel, broke off their pursuit.
33 וְאִישׁ מָשַׁךְ בַּקֶּשֶׁת לְתֻמֹּו וַיַּךְ אֶת־מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל בֵּין הַדְּבָקִים וּבֵין הַשִּׁרְיָן וַיֹּאמֶר לָרַכָּב הֲפֹךְ [יָדֶיךָ כ] (יָדְךָ ק) וְהֹוצֵאתַנִי מִן־הַמַּחֲנֶה כִּי הָחֳלֵיתִי	33 Someone, however, drawing his bow without any special aim, shot the king of Israel between thejoints of his armour. 'Turn about!' he said to his charioteer. 'Get me out of the fighting; I am col apsing.'
34 וַתַּעַל הַמִּלְחָמָה בַּיֹּום הַהוּא וּמֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל הָיָה מַעֲמִיד בַּמֶּרְכָּבָה נֹכַח אֲרָם עַד־הָעָרֶב וַיָּמָת לְעֵת בֹּוא הַשָּׁמֶשׁ	34 But the battle grew fiercer as the day went on, and the king of Israel had to be held upright in hischariot facing the Aramaeans until the evening, and at sunset he died.
