SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Depois dessas palavras, Jesus saiu com os seus discípulos para além da torrente de Cedron, onde havia um jardim, no qual entrou com os seus discípulos.	1 After he had said al this, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron valley where there was agarden into which he went with his disciples.
2 Judas, o traidor, conhecia também aquele lugar, porque Jesus ia freqüentemente para lá com os seus discípulos.	2 Judas the traitor knew the place also, since Jesus had often met his disciples there,
3 Tomou então Judas a coorte e os guardas de serviço dos pontífices e dos fariseus, e chegaram ali com lanternas, tochas e armas.	3 so Judas brought the cohort to this place together with guards sent by the chief priests and thePharisees, al with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4 Como Jesus soubesse tudo o que havia de lhe acontecer, adiantou-se e perguntou-lhes: A quem buscais?	4 Knowing everything that was to happen to him, Jesus came forward and said, 'Who are you lookingfor?'
5 Responderam: A Jesus de Nazaré. Sou eu, disse-lhes. {Também Judas, o traidor, estava com eles.}	5 They answered, 'Jesus the Nazarene.' He said, 'I am he.' Now Judas the traitor was standing amongthem.
6 Quando lhes disse Sou eu, recuaram e caíram por terra.	6 When Jesus said to them, 'I am he,' they moved back and fell on the ground.
7 Perguntou-lhes ele, pela segunda vez: A quem buscais? Disseram: A Jesus de Nazaré.	7 He asked them a second time, 'Who are you looking for?' They said, 'Jesus the Nazarene.'
8 Replicou Jesus: Já vos disse que sou eu. Se é, pois, a mim que buscais, deixai ir estes.	8 Jesus replied, 'I have told you that I am he. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.'
9 Assim se cumpriu a palavra que disse: Dos que me deste não perdi nenhum {Jo 17,12}.	9 This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, 'Not one of those you gave me have I lost.'
10 Simão Pedro, que tinha uma espada, puxou dela e feriu o servo do sumo sacerdote, decepando-lhe a orelha direita. {O servo chamava-se Malco.}	10 Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.The servant's name was Malchus.
11 Mas Jesus disse a Pedro: Enfia a tua espada na bainha! Não hei de beber eu o cálice que o Pai me deu?	11 Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Fatherhas given me?'
12 Então a coorte, o tribuno e os guardas dos judeus prenderam Jesus e o ataram.	12 The cohort and its tribune and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him.
13 Conduziram-no primeiro a Anás, por ser sogro de Caifás, que era o sumo sacerdote daquele ano.	13 They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priestthat year.
14 Caifás fora quem dera aos judeus o conselho: Convém que um só homem morra em lugar do povo.	14 It was Caiaphas who had counsel ed the Jews, 'It is better for one man to die for the people.'
15 Simão Pedro seguia Jesus, e mais outro discípulo. Este discípulo era conhecido do sumo sacerdote e entrou com Jesus no pátio da casa do sumo sacerdote,	15 Simon Peter, with another disciple, fol owed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest,went with Jesus into the high priest's palace,
16 porém Pedro ficou de fora, à porta. Mas o outro discípulo {que era conhecido do sumo sacerdote} saiu e falou à porteira, e esta deixou Pedro entrar.	16 but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out,spoke to the door-keeper and brought Peter in.
17 A porteira perguntou a Pedro: Não és acaso também tu dos discípulos desse homem? Não o sou, respondeu ele.	17 The girl on duty at the door said to Peter, 'Aren't you another of that man's disciples?' He answered, 'Iam not.'
18 Os servos e os guardas acenderam um fogo, porque fazia frio, e se aqueciam. Com eles estava também Pedro, de pé, aquecendo-se.	18 Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with the others.
19 O sumo sacerdote indagou de Jesus acerca dos seus discípulos e da sua doutrina.	19 The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 Jesus respondeu-lhe: Falei publicamente ao mundo. Ensinei na sinagoga e no templo, onde se reúnem os judeus, e nada falei às ocultas.	20 Jesus answered, 'I have spoken openly for al the world to hear; I have always taught in thesynagogue and in the Temple where al the Jews meet together; I have said nothing in secret.
21 Por que me perguntas? Pergunta àqueles que ouviram o que lhes disse. Estes sabem o que ensinei.	21 Why ask me? Ask my hearers what I taught; they know what I said.'
22 A estas palavras, um dos guardas presentes deu uma bofetada em Jesus, dizendo: É assim que respondes ao sumo sacerdote?	22 At these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a slap in the face, saying, 'Is that the wayyou answer the high priest?'
23 Replicou-lhe Jesus: Se falei mal, prova-o, mas se falei bem, por que me bates?	23 Jesus replied, 'If there is some offence in what I said, point it out; but if not, why do you strike me?'
24 {Anás enviou-o preso ao sumo sacerdote Caifás.}	24 Then Annas sent him, bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 Simão Pedro estava lá se aquecendo. Perguntaram-lhe: Não és porventura, também tu, dos seus discípulos? Negou-o, dizendo: Não!	25 As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him, 'Aren't you another of hisdisciples?' He denied it saying, 'I am not.'
26 Disse-lhe um dos servos do sumo sacerdote, parente daquele a quem Pedro cortara a orelha: Não te vi eu com ele no horto?	26 One of the high priest's servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, 'Didn't I seeyou in the garden with him?'
27 Mas Pedro negou-o outra vez, e imediatamente o galo cantou.	27 Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crowed.
28 Da casa de Caifás conduziram Jesus ao pretório. Era de manhã cedo. Mas os judeus não entraram no pretório, para não se contaminarem e poderem comer a Páscoa.	28 They then led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was now morning. They did notgo into the Praetorium themselves to avoid becoming defiled and unable to eat the Passover.
29 Saiu, por isso, Pilatos para ter com eles, e perguntou: Que acusação trazeis contra este homem?	29 So Pilate came outside to them and said, 'What charge do you bring against this man?' They replied,
30 Responderam-lhe: Se este não fosse malfeitor, não o teríamos entregue a ti.	30 'If he were not a criminal, we should not have handed him over to you.'
31 Disse, então, Pilatos: Tomai-o e julgai-o vós mesmos segundo a vossa lei. Responderam-lhe os judeus: Não nos é permitido matar ninguém.	31 Pilate said, 'Take him yourselves, and try him by your own Law.' The Jews answered, 'We are notal owed to put anyone to death.'
32 Assim se cumpria a palavra com a qual Jesus indicou de que gênero de morte havia de morrer {Mt 20,19}.	32 This was to fulfil the words Jesus had spoken indicating the way he was going to die.
33 Pilatos entrou no pretório, chamou Jesus e perguntou-lhe: És tu o rei dos judeus?	33 So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and cal ed Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king ofthe Jews?'
34 Jesus respondeu: Dizes isso por ti mesmo, ou foram outros que to disseram de mim?	34 Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?'
35 Disse Pilatos: Acaso sou eu judeu? A tua nação e os sumos sacerdotes entregaram-te a mim. Que fizeste?	35 Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you overto me: what have you done?'
36 Respondeu Jesus: O meu Reino não é deste mundo. Se o meu Reino fosse deste mundo, os meus súditos certamente teriam pelejado para que eu não fosse entregue aos judeus. Mas o meu Reino não é deste mundo.	36 Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men wouldhave fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.'
37 Perguntou-lhe então Pilatos: És, portanto, rei? Respondeu Jesus: Sim, eu sou rei. É para dar testemunho da verdade que nasci e vim ao mundo. Todo o que é da verdade ouve a minha voz.	37 Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was bornfor this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and al who are on the side of truth listen to myvoice.'
38 Disse-lhe Pilatos: Que é a verdade?... Falando isso, saiu de novo, foi ter com os judeus e disse-lhes: Não acho nele crime algum.	38 'Truth?' said Pilate. 'What is that?' And so saying he went out again to the Jews and said, 'I find nocase against him.
39 Mas é costume entre vós que pela Páscoa vos solte um preso. Quereis, pois, que vos solte o rei dos judeus?	39 But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me,then, to release for you the king of the Jews?'
40 Então todos gritaram novamente e disseram: Não! A este não! Mas a Barrabás! {Barrabás era um salteador.}	40 At this they shouted, 'Not this man,' they said, 'but Barabbas.' Barabbas was a bandit.
